Dropbox supports its desktop app on Windows 11, except on devices running Windows in S mode. Download the app from Dropbox’s official desktop download page, install it, then sign in or create an account and follow the setup prompts. Your Dropbox folder will appear in File Explorer, where you can access and share files.
Check Windows 11 compatibility first
Dropbox lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 as supported for its desktop app, including computers with ARM processors. Windows in S mode is excluded. If your PC is in S mode, Dropbox’s listed support does not cover installing the desktop app in that configuration; check with your device administrator or Microsoft support about your options before proceeding. See Dropbox’s desktop app system requirements.

Download and install Dropbox on Windows 11
- Go to Dropbox’s official desktop download page and download the Windows installer.
- Open the downloaded installer and follow the on-screen instructions.
- When prompted, sign in to your Dropbox account or create one.
- Follow the setup prompts to choose how Dropbox works with files on your computer and begin syncing.
- When setup finishes, open Dropbox from its taskbar icon or find the Dropbox folder in File Explorer.
Dropbox says changes made in the desktop app are automatically synced wherever you access your files in Dropbox, including at dropbox.com. This describes the product’s intended behavior; it is not a guarantee of a particular sync speed or uptime. Dropbox also says not to install its desktop app on a network drive. For full features such as sync-status icons and right-click actions, admin privileges are required; on a work-managed PC, contact IT if those features are missing or installation is blocked. Details are in Dropbox Help’s installation guidance.
Use the Dropbox folder to access and share files
The desktop app integrates Dropbox with File Explorer. You can drag files into the Dropbox folder and use it to work with your Dropbox content. Dropbox describes the app as supporting automatic syncing, computer-folder backup, background syncing, offline access, integration with other apps, and restoring earlier file versions from File Explorer. These are features described by Dropbox, and availability can depend on your account or settings. See Dropbox’s desktop app overview.

| Setting | Local storage | Internet access | When it helps |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online-only | The file remains in Dropbox and does not use the file’s full local storage while it is online-only. | Required to open and download the file; allow enough free disk space for the download. | When you want to save local storage for files you do not need at hand. |
| Available offline | Uses local disk space. | Not required to open the locally available file. | When you need to work with the file without a connection. |
Online-only items may still appear in the Dropbox folder as placeholders. Opening one downloads it to the computer, so you need both a connection and enough local space. Dropbox explains these options in its online-only and offline files guide.
Pick the right Dropbox app for Windows
For a standard Windows 11 setup, use Dropbox’s desktop download page. Dropbox also documents a Windows app distributed through the Microsoft Store and a separate app called Dropbox Lite. The Store app is described as offering the same functionality as the desktop app, but Dropbox says the two cannot be installed together. If switching to the Store version, you may need to uninstall the existing desktop app and select a new Dropbox folder location. Dropbox recommends that managed teams continue using the regular desktop app. Its Store guidance was last stated as updated in March 2024, so check the current listing and Dropbox guidance before changing versions.

- The installer is blocked or full features are missing: On a work or school device, ask IT whether you have the admin privileges needed for installation and features such as sync icons and right-click actions.
- Your PC uses S mode: Dropbox’s desktop-app requirements exclude Windows in S mode. Do not assume the regular installer is supported in that configuration.
- You are trying to install to a network drive: Dropbox says the desktop app cannot be installed on network drives; choose an appropriate local location instead.
- An online-only file will not open: Connect to the internet and check that the computer has enough free space to download it, or make it available offline while connected.
- You already have another Dropbox Windows app installed: The Microsoft Store and desktop apps cannot be installed together. Check Dropbox’s current switching instructions before uninstalling or changing the Dropbox folder location.
