Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Identify your Ethernet adapter or computer model, then install a compatible driver from Windows Update or the PC, motherboard, or adapter manufacturer. If the PC is offline, download the package on another computer and transfer it by USB.
Identify your Ethernet adapter before downloading
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters and look for the wired Ethernet device. If it is listed as an unknown Ethernet Controller, note your computer model or, for a custom-built PC, its motherboard model.
- Use that model information to find the support page for the PC or motherboard maker. Do not choose a package just because its name includes “LAN driver.”
For built-in Ethernet, the computer or motherboard maker is often the best source because it may customize the driver. Intel likewise advises checking the system or board maker’s support page for built-in network connections: Intel Network Adapter Driver for Windows 10.

Try Windows Update first if the PC is online
Windows Update can deliver drivers for network adapters. Check Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update for available updates. Depending on the Windows 10 build, optional driver updates may appear under View optional updates. Microsoft’s guidance is available at Automatically get recommended and updated hardware drivers.

Download from the manufacturer if needed
Search the PC or motherboard maker’s official support site using the exact model, then select the Ethernet or LAN driver for Windows 10. Confirm the supported Windows version and system architecture (32-bit or 64-bit) before downloading. Microsoft recommends getting manual drivers from the device manufacturer and matching them to the Windows version and architecture: Update drivers through Device Manager in Windows.

Install from an extracted driver folder
- If the download is a ZIP archive, extract it to a folder you can find again.
- In Device Manager, expand Network adapters, right-click the Ethernet adapter (or unknown Ethernet Controller), and choose Update driver.
- Select Browse my computer for drivers, then browse to the extracted driver folder. Select Include subfolders if shown, and continue through the prompts.
- Windows will install a suitable driver if it finds one. If it reports that the best driver is already installed, check the manufacturer’s compatibility instructions rather than forcing an unrelated package.
Microsoft documents both automatic and folder-based installation in its Device Manager driver guide. Intel’s manual network-adapter installation instructions also explain how to point Device Manager to extracted files and note that Windows may already have an inbox driver.
Install the driver when the PC has no internet
- On another computer with internet access, find the official support page using the affected PC or motherboard model and download the matching Windows 10 Ethernet driver.
- Copy the installer or extracted driver folder to a USB flash drive.
- Connect the drive to the offline PC. Run the installer, or use Device Manager’s Update driver > Browse my computer for drivers route and select the copied folder.
- Restart if requested, then check whether the adapter appears normally in Device Manager.
Microsoft describes this offline transfer method in Fix Ethernet connection problems in Windows. Keep the PC model and adapter identity handy so you do not have to guess which package to transfer.

Roll back or reinstall if the driver causes problems
Roll back an update that broke Ethernet
If the issue began after a driver update, open Device Manager > Network adapters, right-click the Ethernet adapter, choose Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver, and follow the prompts if that option is available. Microsoft documents rollback in its Device Manager guide.
Reinstall only after saving a backup
Before uninstalling the adapter or its driver, save a compatible driver package somewhere accessible, such as a USB drive. Then, in Device Manager, right-click the adapter and select Uninstall device. Restart the PC; Windows may detect the adapter and reinstall a driver. If it does not, use the saved package. Microsoft recommends having a backup driver available before removing one: Fix Ethernet connection problems in Windows.

Check Ethernet and understand Windows 10 support
After installation, confirm that the adapter appears without an error in Device Manager and test the wired connection. If Ethernet still does not work, check the cable, router, and network connection too; a driver is only one possible cause. Microsoft’s Ethernet troubleshooting guide covers those checks. If the computer has no Ethernet port, Microsoft also notes that a USB-to-Ethernet adapter is an option, but that adapter still needs a compatible driver.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer provides free software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date, and recommends moving to Windows 11. See Microsoft’s Windows Ethernet and support information.
