Usually, yes: you can download a shared cloud file without creating an account if the sender has enabled link access for anyone who has it and permits downloads. If the link is restricted, expired, revoked, or blocked by an organization’s policy, there is no legitimate recipient-side workaround; ask the sender to grant access.
What determines whether an account-free download works?
The sender’s sharing settings matter more than your device. An “anyone with the link” setting can let people access a file without signing in, but it does not always allow downloading. Some services let the owner grant viewing access while separately blocking downloads. A work or school administrator may also restrict external sharing.

Anyone-link access has a privacy trade-off: possession of the link may be enough to open the file, so a recipient could forward it. If the file is sensitive, ask the sender to use a restricted invitation instead.

| Service | Access without an account | Download and verification details |
|---|---|---|
| Google Drive | Yes, when the owner sets General access to “Anyone with the link.” Google says, “Anyone who has the link can use your file, without signing in to their Google Account.” | The owner can separately control whether viewers and commenters may download, print, or copy. Google notes that the link may reveal the owner’s name and email address. |
| Dropbox | Yes. People can view and download files through a shared link without a Dropbox account. | Open the link and select the download icon. Joining a shared folder and syncing its changes requires an account. The owner can remove a link; paid Professional and business plans offer additional password and expiration options. |
| OneDrive and SharePoint | Yes, with an “Anyone” link, which Microsoft says does not require a Microsoft account, passcode, or sign-in. | The owner can block downloads. A specific-recipient link can instead prompt an external recipient without a Microsoft account to verify with a one-time passcode sent by email. Anyone links can be forwarded. |
| iCloud Drive | Yes, when the owner chooses “Anyone with the Link.” | The owner can choose “View and Download Only” or limit access to selected people. If access changes from anyone with the link to selected people, the original link stops working for people who are not reinvited. |
Exact prompts can vary with the sender’s settings and any work or school restrictions. A code or sign-in prompt is not necessarily an error: it may mean the sender shared the file with specific recipients rather than making an anonymous public link.

Try the link, then respond to the prompt
- Open the link the sender gave you in a browser.
- If the file opens and a download control appears, use it. For Dropbox, select the download icon.
- If asked to sign in, request access, or enter a verification code, continue only if the prompt matches the expected service and sender. Google Workspace visitor access and Microsoft’s email verification for external recipients are examples of legitimate account-free verification flows.
- If you cannot access or download the file, contact the sender and explain what the page asks you to do. They can check the link and permissions.
What to ask the sender to check
- The link is still active and points to the intended file.
- The link’s audience setting permits access for you, either through an anyone-link option or a specific invitation.
- Downloads are allowed; viewing access alone may not include download permission.
- Any work or school administrator restrictions allow the intended external sharing method.
Do not try to bypass a sign-in requirement or blocked download. Only the owner or an administrator can grant the access the link lacks.

Some organizations use verified guest access instead of a public link. In Google Workspace, if the organization has enabled visitor sharing, a non-Google recipient verifies an email address with a PIN. The visitor can collaborate for seven days before verifying again. Visitors can download individual files from My Drive or shared drives, but this flow does not support downloading folders.

Microsoft also supports email passcodes for some links restricted to specified recipients. These methods verify access without necessarily requiring a full account; they are different from anonymous “anyone with the link” access.
