To stream a playlist from a VPS to YouTube, identify the playlist format first, prepare authorized media on a server with enough disk and sustained upload capacity, then use FFmpeg to read the files in sequence and send the feed to the current RTMPS ingest URL from YouTube Live Control Room. For a local list of compatible media files, FFmpeg’s concat demuxer is the relevant input; an HLS manifest or another web playlist requires a format-specific approach.
Before you start: confirm YouTube access and playlist type
YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Create or schedule a stream in Live Control Room and obtain the ingest URL and stream key there. YouTube’s currently listed limits are 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key; check Live Control Room for current requirements before setting up a long-running feed. YouTube live-streaming eligibility and limits.
“Playlist” can mean different things, and the input method depends on which one you have:
- A text list of local media files: use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer if the files have matching streams, codecs, and time bases.
- An HLS .m3u8 manifest: this describes media segments and is not the same as a concat-demuxer list. Use the HLS demuxer and verify the manifest’s host, access, and authentication requirements.
- Another remote playlist or service URL: check that format’s FFmpeg input support and access requirements. Do not assume a local concat list can read it.
The steps below cover the local-file case. The concat demuxer’s safe-path option is enabled by default; only consider disabling it for a trusted list whose paths require it.

Prepare the VPS and files
Check capacity and network first
Use media you own or are otherwise authorized to stream. Make sure the VPS has enough disk space for the downloaded files and can sustain the stream’s outbound bitrate. YouTube advises keeping 20% upload headroom, so the target stream bitrate should not consume all of the VPS’s available upload capacity. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
There is no universal VPS CPU or RAM size for this job. Requirements depend on resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, whether FFmpeg can copy the existing streams or must transcode, and the provider’s compute and sustained-egress limits. Benchmark your actual workload or check the provider’s published limits before committing to a plan.

Use paths that resolve on the VPS. The concat demuxer joins packets as if the files were one continuous input; it does not make incompatible codecs, stream layouts, or time bases compatible. If a file’s duration metadata is inaccurate or unavailable, timestamps at joins can be wrong and cause playback artifacts. FFmpeg’s concat documentation describes a duration directive to override a file’s duration when needed. Consult the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation for syntax, path safety, and duration details.
Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream.
- Copy the current server or ingest URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the exact URL YouTube supplies rather than one copied from an older guide.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL. Ensure the supplied server URL uses the rtmps protocol. If you encounter an SSL connection error, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance mentions port 443. See YouTube’s encoder and connection guidance.
Run FFmpeg for a prerecorded playlist
For prerecorded files, -re reads the input at its native frame rate so FFmpeg emits it in real time rather than sending the entire file as fast as possible. FFmpeg cautions against using -re with actual live capture devices or live streams; here it is for files being played out as a live feed.

A basic example using the concat demuxer, H.264 video, AAC audio, and YouTube’s RTMPS output is:
ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 1 -i /srv/media/playlist.txt
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k
-pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv 'rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY'
Replace the example bitrate, keyframe interval, and output URL with values appropriate to your source and current YouTube guidance. The example uses -safe 1, which keeps the concat demuxer’s safe-path behavior enabled; use trusted file paths compatible with that setting. Protect the key in shell history and process listings where possible—for example, by restricting access to the VPS and avoiding shared terminal sessions. YouTube’s encoder settings and ingest details are at YouTube Help.
Choose encoding settings for the source
YouTube’s general encoder guidance recommends H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed 4 seconds. Match resolution and bitrate to the source and YouTube’s current recommendations. The example command encodes to H.264 and AAC, but encoding is not always necessary: if all files and the output requirements are compatible, stream copying may reduce CPU use. Validate compatibility before relying on it, and do not use stream copy if the inputs need conversion to meet the target format.

See YouTube’s recommended encoder settings and leave the recommended 20% network headroom.
Preview, start, and monitor the broadcast
- Start FFmpeg and watch its output for connection errors, dropped frames, or encoding overload.
- Open the stream preview in Live Control Room and confirm that video and audio are arriving correctly.
- If the stream is scheduled for manual start, select Go live in Live Control Room once the preview is ready.
- Monitor the FFmpeg process, VPS network use, and YouTube stream health. Test the encoder before relying on it for a long-running broadcast.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not treat that as a guarantee that a longer broadcast will be archived. YouTube live encoder guidance.

| Option | When it fits | Key considerations |
|---|---|---|
| RTMPS | A straightforward encrypted continuous-feed workflow supported by the encoder. | Use the current RTMPS URL supplied in Live Control Room. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance mentions port 443 for SSL connection errors. |
| HLS ingest | When HDR or a codec unsupported by RTMP is required. | YouTube specifies HTTPS POST/PUT, TS segments of 1–4 seconds, no byte ranges, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. HLS has higher latency than RTMP. |
For HLS ingest details, consult YouTube’s live encoder documentation. The HLS requirements are not a general recipe for every playlist host or authenticated source.

Keep the VPS stream recoverable
FFmpeg has protocol-specific reconnect options and an optional FIFO muxer recovery mechanism, but the correct settings depend on the input protocol and failure type. Reconnection does not guarantee gap-free playback. Decide how the process should behave after an input or network failure, and test recovery rather than assuming a reconnect flag will cover every interruption. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation and FIFO muxer documentation.
Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Only download and stream content you have permission to use. A public URL or a playlist entry does not establish permission. Check the rights for the video, music, and any other audio in every file before broadcasting. YouTube may restrict live streams when they violate its policies or rights rules; review the applicable guidance in YouTube Studio and its live-streaming help.
Technical continuity and monetization eligibility are separate questions. Repeatedly playing prerecorded material does not by itself establish compliance with YouTube’s monetization or reused-content rules. Review the current YouTube channel monetization policies and ensure the channel’s content meets them.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg rejects the concat list or cannot open a file | Incorrect path, unsafe path under the default safe setting, or malformed list entry. | Check the file paths and list syntax, confirm files are readable by the FFmpeg user, and keep safe paths enabled unless the list is trusted and requires a different path form. |
| Artifacts or timestamp jumps at file boundaries | Incompatible streams or inaccurate duration metadata. | Confirm matching streams, codecs, and time bases. Check duration metadata and use concat duration directives where appropriate. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Wrong or outdated ingest URL, invalid key, protocol mismatch, or connection problem. | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, verify the URL uses RTMPS, and inspect FFmpeg’s connection error. For SSL errors, check YouTube’s port 443 guidance. |
| Frames drop or the VPS cannot keep up | Insufficient CPU for transcoding or inadequate sustained network capacity. | Check FFmpeg’s encoding speed and VPS utilization. Reduce encoding workload or choose a suitable VPS based on measured performance; ensure the outbound link has YouTube’s recommended headroom. |
| The stream stops after a network or protocol interruption | Reconnect behavior was not configured for that protocol or failure. | Identify whether the input, output, or VPS connection failed, then select and test the relevant FFmpeg reconnect or FIFO recovery behavior. Recovery may still include a gap. |
| Preview works but viewers hear no audio or see the wrong format | Audio stream absent or incompatible, or output settings do not match the source and target. | Inspect the input streams with FFmpeg, confirm the output audio/video codecs and parameters, and test the complete feed in Live Control Room before going live. |
