For automated retrieval, request the file through GitHub’s Contents REST API; for a collection of repository files, download a ZIP snapshot instead.
Download one CSV in your browser
- Open the repository on GitHub and navigate to the CSV file.
- Open the file and select Raw in the upper-right of the file view.
- In the raw view, select the download control in the upper-right to save the file.
GitHub documents separate controls for viewing raw content, copying it, and downloading it. The download control is shown as an icon, so its appearance may vary as the interface changes. See GitHub’s guide to viewing and understanding files.

Choose the right download method
| What you need | Method | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| One CSV saved manually | Open the file, select Raw, then select the download control. | Direct browser workflow for an individual file. |
| A file retrieved by a script | Use the GitHub Contents REST API and request raw content. | File-size limits and repository permissions apply. |
| Several files from one repository state | On the repository page, select Code, then Download ZIP. | This is a snapshot, not a copy of the full Git history. |
| A reproducible repository snapshot | Download an archive for a specific commit ID. | A commit reference is more stable than a branch or tag that can move. |
GitHub’s archive documentation explains that you can download a snapshot of a branch, tag, or specific commit. For archive details, see Downloading source code archives and Downloading files from GitHub.
Retrieve a CSV with the Contents API
The GitHub Contents endpoint can return raw file contents when the request uses the application/vnd.github.raw+json media type. Consult the Contents REST API reference for the endpoint and request details.
#1 Best Overall
Know the endpoint’s file-size limits
- At or below 1 MB, the endpoint supports all documented features.
- Over 1 MB and up to 100 MB, only the
raworobjectmedia types are supported. - Above 100 MB, the Contents endpoint does not support the file.
These are operational limits documented by GitHub, not estimates. Public resources can be requested without authentication; accessing a private repository requires suitable authorization.
Refresh temporary download URLs
API responses may include a download_url, but GitHub documents these URLs as intended for one-time use and says they expire. For a later retrieval, request a fresh URL through the Contents API rather than relying on a saved one.
Rank #2
Use a ZIP, clone, or commit-pinned archive for the right reason
Download ZIP is appropriate when you need a snapshot of several files, not just one CSV. It does not include the repository’s full version history. A Git clone is different: it copies repository data and history for ongoing version-controlled work. A fork creates a related repository under your GitHub account rather than simply saving files locally. GitHub explains these distinctions in its download guide.

GitHub says the extracted file contents for a commit archive remain stable as long as the commit remains in the repository and the repository name has not changed. Branches and tags can point to different commits later, so an archive based on either may change over time. See GitHub’s archive documentation.
