The “key” for Google Authenticator is usually a private setup secret—or its QR-code equivalent—that connects one specific account to the app. There is no single universal key for Google Authenticator. To set up codes, start in the security settings of the account you want to protect.
What the Google Authenticator key means
When a website or app offers authenticator-based two-step verification, it provides setup information for that account. This is commonly shown as a QR code, with some services also offering the secret as text. Google Authenticator uses that enrollment information to generate one-time verification codes for the particular account. Google describes the app as generating codes for sites and apps that support authenticator-app 2-Step Verification (Google Account Help).

The setup secret is not your Google password, not a code you enter every time you sign in, and not a master key for every entry in the app. Treat it as sensitive: someone who obtains an account’s setup secret may be able to generate codes for that account. Keep it private and do not share it.
Where to find the setup key or QR code
For your Google Account
- Open the Google Account’s 2-Step Verification settings and sign in if prompted.
- Choose the authenticator setup option, labeled “Set up authenticator” in Google’s documented flow.
- Follow the on-screen instructions. Google will provide the setup information to connect the account to an authenticator app.
Screen labels or steps may vary. Do not look for a universal key inside Authenticator; setup begins in the Google Account being secured.

For another website or app
Open that service’s own security, sign-in, or two-step verification settings and start its authenticator-app setup. Use the QR code or secret that service displays. Wording and screens differ by service, so Google’s setup instructions do not establish one identical flow for every site.
What to do if Authenticator is asking for a key
If you are configuring a new account, return to that account’s two-step verification setup and scan its QR code or enter its displayed secret in the authenticator app. If you have a new phone and are trying to restore existing entries, use synchronization or transfer rather than searching for a new universal key.

Move Authenticator codes to a new phone
Google documents two ways to move codes (Google Account Help):
- Sync with a Google Account: Sign in to the same Google Account in Authenticator on the new device. Google lists Android version 6.0 or later and iOS version 4.0 or later for synchronization.
- Transfer manually: On the old phone, export the selected codes and scan the resulting QR code or codes with Authenticator on the new phone. This route requires access to the old device; exporting several accounts may produce more than one QR code.
Google also notes that Authenticator version 7.0 no longer includes a time-correction setting and instead uses the operating system’s time setting. This is specific to that app version; follow the current app behavior if your screens differ.

“Security key” can mean a different thing
A physical security key is separate from the setup secret for an Authenticator entry. Google lists FIDO1 and FIDO2 security keys as options for a second verification step; creating a passkey on a hardware security key requires FIDO2 (Google Account Help). A physical key is not something you retrieve from the Authenticator app.

For a Google Account, Google documents backup codes as an alternative second step and advises users not to share verification codes or backup codes (2-Step Verification help; protecting your personal info). For codes belonging to another service, use that service’s account-recovery process; Google’s guidance does not promise that it can restore a third-party authenticator secret.
