You can generally cancel or downgrade an Aeroplan credit card without closing your Aeroplan membership. Keep the membership open, check what happens to card benefits and pending points with your issuer, and make sure your Aeroplan account has qualifying activity at least once every 18 months if cardholder-based expiry protection will end.
First, separate the card account from your Aeroplan membership
Your credit card is an account with a bank or American Express; your Aeroplan membership is a separate loyalty account. The Aeroplan terms cited here address what happens when the membership account becomes inactive or is closed. They do not say that cancelling a card automatically closes the Aeroplan membership.

Do not close your Aeroplan membership if you want to keep points in it. Air Canada says points remaining when a member terminates the membership and closes the account are immediately forfeited. Neither choice guarantees the same outcome across issuers or card tiers. Ask your card issuer about the specific product change or closure you are considering, and compare these consequences before proceeding.

Air Canada’s Aeroplan card benefits terms describe cancellation of unused Flight Benefits or coupons on closure or a downgrade to a lower-tier card. Benefits and offer terms can change, so confirm the current terms that apply to your card before acting.
Steps to take before changing your card
- Identify the issuer and exact card. Note the card’s tier and check the current agreement and benefits materials for that specific product.
- Ask about a product change or closure. Ask the issuer whether a downgrade is available to you, which product it would change to, and what happens to the account number, annual fee, points-earning features, and card benefits. If you want to cancel instead, ask how closure affects the same items.
- Check Aeroplan activity and point posting. Review your Aeroplan dashboard for the account’s inactivity date. Ask the issuer how pending card-earned points and any recent bonus are treated under your agreement and offer terms; do not count pending points as posted.
- Review unused card benefits. Check your AC Wallet for Flight Benefits or coupons that you have not used. Determine whether a change or closure would cancel them before you proceed.
- Keep the Aeroplan membership open. If you intend to retain the points, do not terminate the membership or close its account.
- Plan activity if card-based protection ends. Arrange to earn or redeem at least one Aeroplan point within each 18-month period, and keep checking the inactivity date shown in your dashboard.
What happens to expiry protection by issuer
The card-linked protection described on issuer pages depends on continuing to meet the relevant cardholder condition and keeping the Aeroplan account in good standing where specified. It is not a universal promise that every downgrade preserves protection.

- TD: Air Canada’s TD card information says points do not expire while you are the primary holder of a TD Aeroplan card and your Aeroplan account is in good standing. Check TD’s current Aeroplan card information and its card agreements for your product.
- American Express: Its Aeroplan card information says points do not expire while you remain the Basic Cardmember of an Amex Aeroplan card and your Aeroplan account is in good standing. Review Amex’s Aeroplan card information and its card agreements.
- CIBC: CIBC says points do not expire while you continue as the primary cardholder of a CIBC Aeroplan card. Check CIBC’s Aeroplan card information and card-specific materials.
These issuer statements describe point-expiry protection while the stated cardholder condition is met. They do not establish which lower-tier products an issuer will offer you or whether a particular product change preserves every benefit.
Use qualifying Aeroplan activity to protect points
Air Canada’s Aeroplan inactivity policy says to earn or redeem at least one point within an 18-month period to keep the account active. The policy also lists donation, transfer, and conversion among activity types. If you are unsure whether a transaction qualifies under current terms, check with Aeroplan and verify that the activity appears in your account.

Air Canada says it may send an email up to 60 days before points expire. Treat that as an extra reminder, not a substitute for monitoring the displayed inactivity date; keep your contact details current.
Bonuses and pending points need issuer-specific answers
Aeroplan’s terms describe repeated product changes and cancelling shortly after receiving a bonus as examples of conduct that may lead to bonus withholding or revocation, or other account remedies. That is not an automatic clawback rule for every downgrade or cancellation. Read the terms for your particular offer and ask the issuer how a proposed change affects any bonus you recently received or are still waiting for. Aeroplan’s general terms also reserve discretion over bonus limits and remedies.

If you are closing the Aeroplan membership too
Closing the credit card and closing the Aeroplan membership are different actions. If you are also terminating the membership, redeem the points first: Air Canada says any points remaining when the Aeroplan account is closed are immediately forfeited. The terms also say Aeroplan may terminate a membership and close an account after three consecutive years of inactivity.
