You can preserve data from before a macOS beta if you have a usable Time Machine backup made before installing the beta—but Apple’s documented route to an earlier macOS erases the Mac first. Turning off beta updates only stops future beta builds; it does not roll back the version already installed. Before erasing, copy important files created or changed since the old backup to a separate safe location.
Choose between stopping beta updates and returning to an earlier macOS
| Your goal | What to do | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Stop receiving future beta builds | Turn off Beta Updates in Software Update. | The installed beta remains. When the next commercial release is available, Apple says you can install it through Software Update. Apple Beta: Unenroll your devices |
| Return to an earlier macOS now | Use Apple’s Restore Shipping Software procedure, then restore a pre-beta Time Machine backup. | The documented process erases and reinstalls macOS; it is not an in-place downgrade. Apple Beta: Restore shipping software |
Apple’s Beta Updates controls differ by macOS version. On Ventura 13.4 or later, open System Settings > General > Software Update and use the information control next to Beta Updates to turn them off. On Ventura 13.3 or earlier, use the beta enrollment details and choose Restore Defaults. Check Apple’s current instructions for your installed version if the labels differ.

What “without losing your data” can—and cannot—mean
The recoverable starting point is the data in a readable Time Machine backup completed before beta installation. Apple’s instructions specify a backup whose macOS version predates the beta. Erasing permanently deletes files on the Mac, so do not proceed on the assumption that a current beta backup can substitute for that older restore point. Files and app-library changes made only after installing the beta may not transfer cleanly to the earlier system. Apple’s Beta Software Agreement warns that data created or changed using prerelease software may be incapable of being restored or recovered: Apple Beta Software Agreement. Treat such items as at risk, and copy irreplaceable files separately before erasing.

Prepare before erasing the Mac
- Find and verify the pre-beta backup. Confirm its completion date and browse or restore a few important files. Apple describes using Time Machine to restore selected items and earlier file versions: Restore items backed up with Time Machine on Mac.
- Keep a separate copy of current files. Copy anything created or changed since the pre-beta backup to another safe destination. Apple recommends backing up somewhere other than the Mac’s internal disk, such as an external hard disk: Back up your Mac with Time Machine. A new backup made while running the beta is useful as a separate source for files, but it is not the pre-beta restore point Apple’s downgrade procedure calls for.
- Have credentials ready. Know the password for an encrypted backup and have relevant Apple Account credentials available; Apple’s restore steps may require authentication. See Restore your Mac from a backup.
- Identify your Mac’s processor type. Intel and Apple silicon use different restore routes. Do not assume one Recovery key combination or restore procedure applies to both.
Use the restore route for your Mac
Intel Mac
Apple Beta’s Intel workflow includes turning off Find My Mac and signing out, making a backup, starting Internet Recovery, erasing the startup volume group, reinstalling macOS, and choosing a pre-beta Time Machine backup in Setup Assistant. The listed Internet Recovery options are Option-Command-R or Option-Shift-Command-R, but the macOS offered can vary with the Mac and key combination. Verify that the selected route installs a version suitable for your goal before proceeding. Follow Apple’s current model-specific instructions at Restore shipping software and consult How to reinstall macOS.
Apple silicon Mac
Apple Beta directs Apple silicon users to restore with Apple Configurator 2, then restore a pre-beta Time Machine backup in Setup Assistant. This is a distinct procedure from Intel Internet Recovery. Follow Apple’s current instructions for your exact Mac and software state rather than improvising with an installer or erase option: Restore shipping software.

Apple’s general Recovery instructions explain that reinstall options may install the current, original, or latest compatible macOS depending on the Mac and recovery method. Reinstalling without erasing can preserve apps and personal data, but Apple does not document that as the method for returning from a beta to an earlier release. How to reinstall macOS

After installing macOS, use Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant to transfer from the pre-beta Time Machine backup. Apple says migration can transfer personal files, apps, and the user account; reinstall macOS first for a full system recovery. Large transfers may take hours. Restore your Mac from a backup

If you do not want a full migration, Time Machine can restore selected files or earlier versions of files. This can help recover individual items, but it is not equivalent to restoring the complete pre-beta system and app state. Restore items backed up with Time Machine on Mac

Apple’s documented route cannot restore the pre-beta system state without the required earlier backup. You can still copy accessible files from the beta installation before erasing and later recover separately backed-up files where compatible, but there is no basis to promise recovery of beta-only data, application state, or libraries. If preserving those items matters, do not erase until you have copied what you can and confirmed your separate copies are readable.
