1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose a crypto exchange by checking, in order, whether the right legal entity can serve you and offer the service you need, how it handles custody and security, what your complete transaction will cost, and whether the relevant trading pair has enough liquidity for your order. There is no universally best exchange: the right choice depends on where you live, what you plan to do, and the size and type of trades you expect to make.
1. Confirm the exchange can serve you legally
Before comparing features, identify the legal entity that would open your account, your country or state of residence, and the specific service you want to use. A platform may operate through different entities in different places, and its status for one activity does not automatically establish that every product or crypto asset it offers is authorized or available to you.

- Find the entity named in the platform’s account terms for your location.
- Check the relevant regulator’s current register and warning notices for that entity and the activity you intend to use.
- Confirm the exact service is available to residents where you live. Spot trading, custody, lending, derivatives, and other products may be treated differently.
- Read the terms that apply to your account, including which entity holds assets and how disputes or account restrictions are handled.
In the United States, securities-law treatment can depend on the asset and activity. The SEC’s investor guidance describes registration as relevant to specified regulated activities; it should not be read as a blanket endorsement of a platform or as proof that every crypto service must register with the SEC. Check the status that applies to the particular entity and service rather than relying on a badge, marketing claim, or broad statement that a company is “regulated.”

The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) states that it published final rules and guidance on 30 June 2026. The FCA describes a new regime beginning on 25 October 2027, with the rules applying to cryptoasset firms granted permission under the Financial Services and Markets Act (FSMA) on or after that date. Its separate registration information describes an application process under the Money Laundering Regulations. These UK-specific milestones do not establish a platform’s status in another country, nor do they mean that an existing registration is the same thing as permission under the future regime. Check the FCA’s current information and the rules relevant to your own location.

2. Examine custody and security disclosures
Look for specific, understandable information about who holds customer assets, how withdrawals are processed, what security controls the provider describes, and what customers can expect if the service is interrupted or the company fails. A polished security page is not a substitute for clear terms about the custody arrangement and the limits of any protections.
- Custody: Which legal entity holds the assets, and are they held for customers or used in other ways under the terms?
- Withdrawals: What checks, limits, delays, or network restrictions can apply?
- Security controls: What does the provider disclose about protecting accounts and assets? Look for concrete descriptions rather than an unqualified claim that funds are “secure.”
- Incidents and service failure: Is there clear information about incident disclosures, service interruptions, complaints, and what happens if the firm cannot operate?
- Account access: How can you recover an account, and what support is available if you lose access or suspect unauthorized activity?
How to assess proof of reserves
Do not treat a proof-of-reserves report as equivalent to an audited financial statement or as proof that all customer liabilities can be met. The SEC cautions that these reports may not provide meaningful assurance about a firm’s ability to meet customer obligations. If a provider publishes one, examine what it actually covers:

- Which assets and liabilities were included?
- What date does the report cover, and how often is it repeated?
- Who performed the work, and are they independent of the provider?
- What standards and level of assurance were used?
If those details are absent or unclear, the report offers limited information for comparing custody risk. It does not, by itself, resolve questions about the firm’s financial condition or your rights as a customer.
3. Work out the full cost of your transaction
A displayed trading fee is only one possible cost. Compare the same asset, order size, payment method, and withdrawal route on each service, then account for every charge that applies to the transaction you plan to make.

- Trading fees: Check maker and taker fees where the platform uses them, and whether your intended order type changes the rate.
- Spread: Compare the buy and sell quotes. The difference between them can affect what you pay even when a headline trading fee looks low.
- Funding and conversion: Include deposit, payment-method, and currency-conversion charges where applicable.
- Withdrawal: Check the exchange’s withdrawal charge and any applicable network fee for the asset and network you intend to use.
- Financing: If you use a product involving borrowing or funding, include its costs and conditions rather than comparing it with a simple spot purchase.
For a fair comparison, write down the quoted purchase amount and the amount you would receive, then estimate the cost of selling and withdrawing through the same route. Recheck the provider’s current fee schedule and quote immediately before trading: fees, spreads, and terms can change. No current exchange-specific fee figures are established here, so a named-provider price comparison would require checking each provider’s current schedule.

Liquidity is specific to a trading pair and the size of the order, not just to an exchange’s overall volume ranking. Before committing funds, confirm that the platform supports the exact pair and order type you need, then inspect the bid-ask spread and the order-book depth near your intended trade size.

- Built to last - dust & water resistant (up to 1 meter & 1 hour), this durable plastic card is made with PVC, PC & PET and certified IP68.
- Bid-ask spread: A wider gap between the best available buy and sell prices can make a trade more costly.
- Order-book depth: Look at the quantity available at prices close to the current quote. An order larger than the available depth may execute across less favorable prices.
- Pair and order type: Verify that the asset is traded against the currency or stablecoin you plan to use and that the platform supports your intended order type.
- Withdrawal path: Confirm that the asset can be withdrawn on the network you need; trading availability alone does not establish that a particular withdrawal route is supported.
Volume rankings alone do not show what price you could get for your specific order. No current venue-level liquidity measurements are available for ranking named exchanges, so compare the live market for your own pair and order size instead.
5. Check the practical details that affect using the account
Once an exchange meets your basic legal, custody, cost, and liquidity requirements, check the operating conditions that could matter after signup. Confirm supported assets and networks, withdrawal limits, account restrictions, customer-support options, and the account-recovery process. Read the relevant terms rather than assuming that an advertised asset, network, or feature is available to every customer in every region.
Make a shortlist using the same assumptions for each candidate: your location, intended service, legal entity, asset and trading pair, order size, payment method, and withdrawal route. That keeps a low fee for one transaction from being compared with a different product or set of conditions on another platform.
6. Make the decision with a simple checklist
- Eligibility: Have I confirmed the serving legal entity, local availability, and status for the specific activity?
- Custody: Do I understand who holds the assets, how withdrawals work, and what the terms say about interruption or failure?
- Security evidence: Are the provider’s disclosures specific enough to assess, and have I avoided treating proof of reserves as an audit or guarantee?
- Total cost: Have I compared fees, spreads, deposits, conversions, withdrawals, and any financing costs for the same transaction?
- Liquidity: Does the intended pair have a spread and nearby order-book depth that suit my order size?
- Operations: Are the needed assets, networks, support, recovery options, and withdrawal conditions acceptable?
If a platform does not clearly answer an important question about legal status, custody, or access to your assets, do not treat the missing information as reassurance. Continue comparing providers or seek qualified legal advice for jurisdiction-specific questions. This checklist is general information, not individualized investment or legal advice.
