What makes a before-and-after comparison useful?
A screenshot pair is meaningful only when it isolates the website change you want to document. If the route, viewport, browser, account state, or page data differs between captures, the images may show those differences instead of—or alongside—the code change.

Before capturing, record the page or route, relevant interaction state, viewport dimensions, browser, and date or commit. If the page depends on login or particular data, record that state too. Use the same conditions for both images, and wait for the page to settle. Avoid transient hover states and animations where possible; Playwright notes that a hover effect visible at capture time appears in the screenshot.
Document a change manually, step by step
- Choose the state to document. Identify the URL, route, and interaction state that show the change. Note any login or test-data requirements.
- Capture the before image. Use your browser’s screenshot facility. Save it under a descriptive name and record the route, viewport, browser, and date or commit.
- State the expected change. Write a short, observable description, such as “navigation wraps to two rows on narrow screens” or “saving now shows a confirmation.”
- Make the website change. Keep the expected result specific enough that someone can judge the screenshots against it.
- Capture the after image under matching conditions. Use the same route, viewport, browser, data, and interaction state. Wait for the page to settle before capturing.
- Present the pair with context. Place the images side by side, label each Before or After, and include the page, viewport, date or commit, and a concise change description. A diff overlay can be a third view, but should not replace the original images.
- Review and retain the record. Check intended changes as well as accidental shifts, missing assets, clipping, font changes, and responsive regressions. Attach the images to the pull request, issue, release note, or change record.
A practical label format
For example: Before — /pricing, 1280 × 800, commit abc123 and After — /pricing, 1280 × 800, commit def456. Add one sentence describing the change and its intended behavior. The precise wording matters less than making the context clear to a reviewer.

Choose based on setup effort, consistency, who owns the baselines, the review experience, and whether hosted infrastructure is useful to your team.
Automate recurring comparisons with Playwright
Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion captures a screenshot and compares it with a reference image. The assertion waits until two consecutive screenshots match before comparing, which helps reduce differences caused by a page that is still changing. Keep the test’s page state and viewport deliberate so the baseline represents the state you intend to protect.

});Run the test normally to compare against its saved reference. When you intentionally change the appearance, inspect the proposed result before replacing the reference. Playwright supports updating snapshots with --update-snapshots; its documentation recommends committing the snapshot directory to version control and reviewing changes to it. A passing or updated baseline does not prove that a visual difference is harmless—it still needs human review.

Tune comparison tolerance carefully
Playwright’s threshold and maxDiffPixels options adjust how much pixel-level difference the assertion permits. They tune the comparison, not the product’s visual correctness. If a test fails, inspect the images and the cause before increasing tolerance; otherwise, a real regression could be accepted as noise.
Review differences without losing the evidence
- Expected design change: Confirm that the changed area matches the written intent.
- Unexpected layout shift or clipping: Check responsive behavior and whether content now overflows or is obscured.
- Missing image, font, or other asset: Verify that the asset loaded in both captures and that the environment is comparable.
- Broad differences unrelated to the change: Check viewport, browser, data, login state, animations, and whether the page had settled.
- Automated baseline change: Review the image diff and original screenshots before accepting an update.
A diff identifies that pixels changed; it cannot determine whether the change is intended. Preserve the original before and after images alongside any overlay so reviewers can see the actual page, not only the visualization of the difference.

The before and after images differ everywhere
First compare the capture conditions, not just the code. Match the viewport, browser, route, user or data state, and interaction state. Check for animations, changing content, or a page that was captured before it settled.
A Playwright screenshot assertion fails intermittently
Investigate unstable content or transient states, including hover effects and animation, and ensure the test reaches the intended page state before asserting. Playwright’s screenshot assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match, but that does not make different data or continuously changing content equivalent.
The baseline changed, but the change was not intended
Do not update the reference just to make the test pass. Inspect the proposed screenshot and diff, identify the source of the change, and fix the page or test conditions. Use --update-snapshots only after review when the new appearance is intentional.

A change is tiny or appears to be rendering noise
Inspect the original images and decide whether the difference matters for the interface. If you adjust threshold or maxDiffPixels, treat that as a test sensitivity choice—not evidence that the visual change is safe.
