To document a crypto exchange deposit, show a clear trail from the original source of the money or cryptocurrency to the exchange account. Pair evidence of origin—such as a payslip, sale contract, or crypto purchase history—with records showing receipt and the transfer or blockchain transaction that funded the deposit. The exact documents depend on the exchange, your region, and the source of the funds.
What the exchange means by “source of funds”
Source of funds (SoF) explains where the money or crypto used in a particular transaction came from. It is different from source of wealth (SoW), which explains how you accumulated your overall assets. An exchange may ask about one or both. Kraken describes the distinction in its source-of-funds guidance, while Binance describes SoF as the origin of a specific deposit in its verification guidance.

A transfer record alone may not explain the original source. For example, a bank statement showing a payment to an exchange shows movement, but a payslip or other earnings record may be needed to explain how the money was obtained. Conversely, an earnings record without the bank transaction may not connect those earnings to the deposit. Kraken notes that one document can sometimes show both the income and transfer; otherwise, provide a connected set of records.
Choose records that match the deposit’s actual origin
Use the records that explain your own funds and transaction. The examples below reflect documents named by exchanges, not a universal checklist or guarantee of acceptance.

| Deposit origin | Records to consider | What the records should connect |
|---|---|---|
| Salary deposited to a bank account | Bank statement covering the relevant salary deposits and exchange transfer; payslip, employer letter, or tax record if needed to establish earnings. | Employment income, receipt into your account, and the outgoing exchange payment. Coinbase lists payslips and bank statements as examples; Kraken says a statement may sometimes show both income and transfer. Coinbase document examples; Kraken guidance. |
| Savings or investments | Recent savings or investment account statement and the transaction record for the transfer to the exchange. | The account holding the assets and their movement to the exchange. Coinbase lists savings, investment, and retirement statements among its examples. Coinbase document examples. |
| Crypto bought or held on another exchange | Sending exchange statement or transaction receipt, withdrawal record, destination deposit record, and account identity information. | The crypto’s movement between accounts and, if requested, how it was acquired. Coinbase and OKX Europe describe exchange records as useful evidence. Coinbase document examples; OKX Europe guidance. |
| Crypto held in a self-hosted wallet | Wallet statement, export, or transaction history showing dates, amounts, transaction types, and addresses where available; evidence linking the wallet to you if available and requested. | The wallet’s transaction history and the link between you and the wallet. Coinbase describes wallet statements and screenshots or CSV transaction records as examples, and says external wallet statements should include an identifier such as your name or email. Coinbase document examples. |
| Crypto trading or sale | Exchange transaction history or sale receipt, plus a bank record showing any fiat proceeds. Tax records may help support the explanation. | The sale or trading activity, receipt of proceeds, and transfer to the exchange. If asked, preserve records tracing the crypto back to its original acquisition. Examples appear in Coinbase’s document guidance, Kraken’s guidance, and Binance’s guidance. |
| Sale of property or another asset | Signed sale contract or settlement statement and a bank statement showing receipt of proceeds and subsequent movement. | The asset sale, proceeds paid to you, and the transfer that funded the deposit. Binance includes sale documentation and proceeds evidence among its examples. Binance guidance. |
| Gift, inheritance, loan, or tax refund | For a gift, a gift letter or affidavit and receipt record; for inheritance, legal documentation and receipt record; for a loan, the agreement and incoming funds record; for a tax refund, the tax return or refund record and bank receipt. | The reason for the incoming funds, receipt into your account, and subsequent transfer. Examples are described by Crypto.com, Kraken, and Binance. |
Assemble a traceable evidence trail
- Identify the deposit and request. Note the exchange’s exact request, the deposit date, amount, currency, and the source category it asks you to explain.
- Start with the origin record. Choose the closest primary record, such as a payslip, sale contract, tax record, investment statement, loan agreement, inheritance document, exchange statement, or wallet transaction history.
- Show receipt of the funds. Add the bank or wallet record showing the money or crypto arriving, where applicable.
- Show the transfer to the exchange. Include the bank transfer or crypto withdrawal and deposit records that connect the source account or wallet to the exchange. For crypto, include transaction hashes and wallet addresses when requested, and retain details identifying the sending account or linking it to you.
- Check that the records agree. Names, dates, amounts, and account or wallet identifiers should form a coherent trail. If the records do not make the connection self-evident, add a short factual note explaining how they relate. Do not alter records or claim more than they show.
- Use the exchange’s specified submission channel. Follow the exact upload instructions in your account or request. Coinbase says its documents are submitted through a secure portal; do not assume another exchange uses the same process. Coinbase guidance.
- Keep copies. Save the files you submit and the exchange’s request so you can refer to the same evidence if the exchange asks follow-up questions.
Check the exchange’s requirements before submitting
Evidence examples are not interchangeable guarantees. Exchanges may ask for multiple records, impose different document-age limits, or specify accepted formats and upload channels. Coinbase’s examples use different time windows for payslips, statements, and tax records, so do not apply one universal freshness rule. Its guidance also notes a Brazil-specific process; regional page versions and local requirements can matter. Check the instructions for your exchange account and location, including Coinbase, Binance, Crypto.com, OKX Europe, or Bitpanda.
Do not edit or obscure evidence to change its meaning. If you are considering redacting private information, first check the exchange’s instructions: the cited public guidance does not establish a universal redaction rule. The exchange makes the final decision on whether the evidence satisfies its review.
