1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou can document abuse by preserving messages and other records, noting incidents in a factual timeline, and keeping the material somewhere the abusive person cannot access—but only if doing so is safe. You do not have to collect evidence, and you are not responsible for building a case. If recording or storing anything could put you at risk, stop and seek advice from a specialist advocate using a contact method you believe is safer.
Put safety ahead of documentation
Before saving anything, consider whether the other person can see your device, accounts, notifications, or physical belongings. Some apps may alert someone when a screenshot, screen recording, or download is made. A saved note or changed account setting may also be discovered. If you are unsure, do not test the situation or make sudden changes; an advocate can help you plan around your circumstances.

The UK Home Office’s statutory guidance on controlling or coercive behaviour states: “However, it is important to remember that victim safety is paramount and it is the job of the police to build the case on behalf of the victim, and not the role of the victim to build the case for the police.” Documentation is optional. The eSafety Commissioner likewise advises: “Don’t pressure yourself to have a perfect record of the abuse and only collect evidence when it’s safe to do so.”
Do not abruptly remove a suspected tracker, delete material, change settings, or confront the abusive person without individualized safety planning. Those actions can affect safety or access to information; seek specialist advice first if you can.

What evidence can be useful?
Keep what is available and safe to retain. A record can help make a pattern or an individual incident easier to understand, but no particular item guarantees a legal outcome.
- Digital communications: texts, emails, direct messages, social posts, comments, images, videos, and live chats.
- Contact records: call logs, repeated calls or messages, and visible phone numbers, usernames, or profile details.
- Voicemail: saved messages may be removed by a provider after a limited period. Retention varies, so preserve one promptly only if safe.
- Incident notes: a chronology of what happened, when and where, who was present, and what records exist.
Online content may be deleted or become inaccessible even if you have its URL. Legal Aid NSW and the eSafety Commissioner explain practical ways to retain online-abuse evidence: Legal Aid NSW: Cyberstalking and domestic violence and eSafety Commissioner: Collecting evidence safely.

How to save digital evidence with context
- Check whether capturing it is safe. Consider who can access the device or account and whether the service notifies another person about screenshots, recordings, or downloads. If a notification is a concern, eSafety suggests photographing or videoing the screen with another device as an alternative—but only if that is safer for you.
- Capture enough to show what happened. Where possible, include the full conversation rather than only the most alarming line. Preserve the account or profile, platform or service, date and time, and URL for online content. For repeated contact, include the visible number or profile used.
- Keep the original unchanged. Avoid editing or highlighting the original, and do not crop the only copy. If you need to point out a passage, make a separate copy only if doing so is safe and retain the original intact.
- Save promptly when content may disappear. Posts can be removed, links may stop displaying content, and voicemail retention varies by provider. Do not risk discovery just to preserve something.
Where it is safe and practical, technical details such as a page’s HTML may help preserve information if a web page changes. This is optional, not a requirement.
Keep a factual incident chronology
Use a format you can access safely and maintain without added risk: notes on paper, an electronic record, or notes kept with help from a trusted person. A bound diary is one possible format, not required equipment; a paper record could be found by the abusive person.

For each incident, record what you can without guessing:
- Date, approximate time, and location.
- What was said or done; use exact words when you remember them.
- Who witnessed it, if anyone.
- What supporting material exists, such as a message, call record, or photograph.
- Relevant context, including how it relates to earlier incidents or a pattern of behavior.
Separate what you directly saw or heard from what you recall or infer. Context can clarify why a message that looks ambiguous on its own is part of abusive behavior. Queensland Government guidance also recommends noting dates, times, what was said or done, location, and how the incident affected you: Collecting evidence safely.

Choose storage based on who could access it
No storage method is automatically secure. A notebook, another device, email, cloud account, or copy held by a trusted person may each create a different discovery or access risk. Consider these questions before choosing:
Recommended Free Tools
- Who can physically reach the device or paper record?
- Who can sign in to the account, see its notifications, or recover it?
- Could saving, sending, or moving a file leave a visible trace or alert someone?
- Can you retrieve the record later without increasing danger?
Choose the option that fits your circumstances rather than moving evidence simply to create a backup. Legal Aid Ontario’s guidance on digital privacy can help explain the risks of shared or monitored devices: Cover your tracks.

Get help with preservation and next steps
A domestic abuse advocate can help assess whether documenting is safe, decide where records might be kept, and plan how to avoid alerting the abusive person. Depending on your location and circumstances, a lawyer or law enforcement agency may be able to request or preserve records held by an online service. Do not assume a platform will provide account data directly or that a preservation request is available without a legal process.
Reporting routes, privacy rules, evidence requirements, and court procedures differ by jurisdiction. A screenshot or diary entry is not guaranteed to be admissible or decisive. For local options, contact a specialist domestic abuse service, legal aid provider, or police contact when it is safe to do so.
