Choose the Dawn of War IV faction whose decisions sound fun to you—not one presumed to be universally strongest. Orks lean into aggressive numbers and multiple strongholds; Adeptus Mechanicus build a network to support research and firing lines; Necrons combine durability with territory-linked bonuses and recovery; Space Marines field elite units that can be upgraded, reinforced, and redeployed. These are preference matches based on developer-presented mechanics, not hands-on testing or a post-launch ranking.
Which Dawn of War IV faction should you play?
Start with how you like to manage an RTS army. Do you want to spread pressure across the map, build infrastructure for a firing line, advance steadily with resilient troops, or command a smaller elite force? The publisher describes four distinct approaches:

| Faction | What its announced game pattern emphasizes | May suit players who enjoy… | Tradeoff to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Orks | Aggression, strength in numbers, multiple bases or strongholds, Waaagh! Banners, and free Stratagems. The faction guide says individual units—especially ranged units—are not its greatest strength, and its buildings are relatively easy to destroy. | Applying pressure, directing many units, and expanding across the map. | Numbers do not make reckless advances safe; opponents can punish exposed attacks. |
| Adeptus Mechanicus | Establishing a Noosphere Network, extending it to resource points, and using Noosphere levels for research and upgrades. The publisher describes a strong firing line and a mix of inexpensive units and powerful late-game options. | Building infrastructure, researching upgrades, and planning ranged positions. | The described approach depends on developing the network and protecting ranged units. |
| Necrons | Surviving prolonged engagements, recovering losses through Resurrection Galleries, advancing a territory-linked Power Matrix, and using mid- to late-game translocation to offset slow movement. | Durable forces, deliberate map progression, and timing positional moves. | Slow movement and vulnerability outside the Power Matrix are weaknesses opponents can exploit; resilience is not invulnerability. |
| Space Marines | Elite fighters, upgrades, on-field reinforcement, fortifications, reserves, and redeployment through the Thunderhawk Relay. The publisher says they are usually advantaged in one-on-one encounters. | Using fewer, individually capable units and making reinforcement or repositioning decisions. | Units are expensive and resource hungry, and elite forces can be stretched across several engagements. |
The mechanics in this comparison come from the publisher’s faction guide; the “may suit” column is an interpretation of those descriptions, not independent gameplay testing.

Dawn of War IV retains familiar RTS choices that help make the comparison concrete: build and expand bases, capture and upgrade resource points, specialize squads with weapons and abilities, use cover and garrison buildings, and gain power through unit veterancy. Ask yourself which part of that loop you most want to focus on.

- Reinforcement and timing: Space Marines reward attention to where elite units are committed and when to reinforce or redeploy them; Necrons’ announced translocation gives movement timing a role as well.
These are ways to read the announced systems, not a difficulty ranking. Official material does not establish which faction is easiest for beginners.
Which faction fits your preferred multiplayer mode?
The developer has named three multiplayer matchmaking modes, each of which puts a different emphasis on the shared RTS systems:

| Mode | Objective | What to think about when choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Annihilation | Destroy the enemy headquarters and defend your own. | If you prefer a base-destruction objective, consider how you would like to build pressure while protecting your stronghold. |
| Domination | Hold Strategic Positions to earn Victory Points. | Think about how much you enjoy capturing, holding, and defending territory. |
| Maelstrom | Secure dynamically appearing objectives to earn Victory Points. | Consider whether you want to adapt army movement and map coverage as objectives shift. |
The mode descriptions come from the developer’s Steam community posts. They describe objectives, not which faction performs best in each mode. The developers have said they want faction identity to remain authentic while keeping play fair, with balance work informed by data and feedback after launch. There is not yet a settled competitive ranking to use as a reason to choose one faction over another.
Choose by campaign and faction identity, too
Multiplayer performance is not the only reason to pick a side. Deep Silver says each of the four factions has its own campaign within one overarching story. The announced modes also include competitive multiplayer, Last Stand, and Skirmish; many modes support solo or co-op play. KING Art Games described four full single-player and co-op campaigns, one per faction, in its August 19, 2025 announcement.

Choose the faction whose identity or campaign premise interests you if story is your priority. Space Marines include Blood Ravens and Dark Angels in the publisher’s presentation. Dark Angels are a playable Space Marine sub-faction—not a fifth top-level faction—and the Space Marine campaign includes missions commanding both chapters.
For scale, Deep Silver / PLAION’s official page lists 70+ campaign missions in 2026. KING Art Games’ 2025 announcement described over 110 units and buildings, many upgradeable; that is an announcement-era count, not a verified final-release total.

What is confirmed—and what is still unknown?
Dawn of War IV is still forthcoming as of October 4, 2026. Deep Silver’s current official FAQ lists December 3, 2026 as the release date and Steam for Windows PC as the platform. It says the campaign supports solo or co-op play and multiplayer modes are planned for launch. Release timing and platform details can change before launch, so check the publisher’s current FAQ for updates.
