How to Dock a Boat Without Scratching the Hull

Prepare lines and fenders before the approach, position protection at likely contact points, and adapt a slow docking maneuver to wind, current and dock type.

To reduce the chance of scratching your boat while docking, prepare docklines and fenders before you approach, put fenders on the side facing the dock, and move in slowly with wind and current in mind. Place the fenders where the hull could touch, and take extra care at piling docks, where a fender can slip between the pilings. No setup can guarantee a scratch-free docking in every condition.

Prepare before you approach

Choose your berth and docking side, then check wind, current and nearby traffic. Think about how those conditions may move the boat during the approach and once it is alongside. Guidance from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s 2026 boater safety course also identifies wind, current and traffic as factors to consider when preparing to dock.

Before the boat reaches the dock, ready the bow and stern lines and any spring line your docking plan calls for. Put fenders on the side that will face the dock. Mercury Marine and Discover Boating both recommend getting lines and fenders prepared before the approach rather than scrambling to set them as the boat closes in.

Position fenders to protect the hull

Fenders only help if they are between the hull and the surface it might contact. For an alongside berth, plan coverage around the bow, the widest midship area and the stern, adjusting the positions to the shape of your boat and the dock. Mercury Marine describes fore, aft and amidships placement for larger vessels; West Marine likewise advises coverage near the bow, midship and stern.

Seachoice Twin Eye Ribbed Fender Kit, Includes a Pair of MFP Fender Lines, Black, 5-1/2 in. X 20 in.
  • Durable, dependable Marine Grade vinyl fenders are Roto-molded for superior strength, cushioning, and high-gloss finish
  • Premium-quality ribbed material ensures softness
  • Valve plug housing is molded into fender, and valve is recessed to prevent valve lug from pulling away from fender
  • Heavy-duty integral lugs for longer durability; Roto-molded for even wall thickness
  • Includes pair of 3/8-inch x 5-foot double-braided MFP fender lines; each line has reinforced nylon mesh loop on one end

Set each fender so its center is at or slightly above the hull’s widest point where contact is expected, following West Marine’s placement guidance. The right number and position depend on the boat and the contact points; there is no universal fender count or height that suits every hull and dock.

At a piling dock

Ordinary cylindrical fenders can be pushed into the gaps between pilings, leaving the hull exposed to a piling. Where that geometry is a concern, a fender board spanning at least two pilings can help keep a protected contact surface in place, with fenders between the board and hull. West Marine describes this as an option for piling docks, not a requirement for every berth.

Approach slowly and adapt to conditions

Keep the boat moving slowly enough to retain control, and avoid carrying unnecessary speed into the dock. The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission’s Boat Operation handbook describes docking as bringing a boat to a fixed object softly; its practical guidance, like Discover Boating’s, emphasizes reducing speed.

The best angle depends on the wind, current and how your boat responds. California’s Division of Boating and Waterways gives these scenario-specific examples in A Course for Safe Boating, Chapter 3:

OCEANBROAD Boat Fenders for Docking, EVA Pontoon Bumpers with Locking Rope
  • 【MAINTENANCE-FREE EVA FOAM】Crafted from marine-grade EVA foam, these boat bumpers fenders need no inflation. Permanently buoyant and resistant to UV, saltwater, and oil, this material won't fade or crack. Unlike traditional inflatable options, it provides reliable, zero-maintenance protection without deflation risks.
  • 【INTEGRATED LOCKING SYSTEM】These boat fenders for docking feature a patented integrated locking system with automatic buckle for tool-free installation. The durable strap secures instantly to pilings or cleats—no knots needed. This modular dock bumper allows easy on-the-spot adjustment via the locking structure.
  • 【ENHANCED IMPACT ABSORPTION】The reinforced multi-grid backing absorbs and evenly distributes collision force. This design provides superior cushioning compared to standard smooth-back eva boat fenders, effectively protecting your hull and gunwale from scratches and dents caused by dock contact.
  • 【IDEAL SIZE FOR WATERCRAFT】At 17"x8.7"x4.3", these boat bumpers fit various vessels. For optimal coverage: use 2 for boats under 10ft, 3 for 10-20ft, add one per additional 10ft. This sizing ensures tailored protection for your specific watercraft with the right number of pontoon boat fenders.
  • 【VERSATILE INSTALLATION】These pontoon boat bumpers units include multi-strand elastic ropes and a sturdy threading buckle. This combination enables secure fastening to any dock edge or deck configuration. Whether for pontoon or bass boat, these boat fenders offer flexible options as reliable dock bumpers.
  • With no wind or current, approach at roughly a 10–20 degree angle.
  • When wind or current comes from the dock, use a sharper angle.
  • When wind or current pushes toward the dock, approach parallel to it.

These are examples for the conditions described in that course, not a universal maneuver prescription. If conditions make a controlled approach difficult, reassess the plan rather than relying on a fixed angle.

Keep crew clear of pinch points

Give any helper a clear task, such as handling a prepared line, and keep hands and feet out of the space between the boat and the dock. Do not jump from the boat or try to stop it with a limb. Pennsylvania’s handbook recommends using a boat hook to pull the boat closer to the dock; it is a handling aid, not a substitute for slow boat control or correctly placed fenders.
