A market-cap-weighted S&P 500 fund owns hundreds of companies, but its largest holdings can still drive a substantial share of its performance. As of August 31, 2026, the index’s top ten constituents represented 37.8% of its weight, and its largest constituent represented 8.1%, according to S&P Dow Jones Indices. Those figures describe the whole index—not a technology-sector percentage—and change as prices and index membership change. To diversify, first look at your full portfolio, then decide whether to broaden stock exposure, add other asset classes, or both, based on your goals and ability to take risk.

What an S&P 500 fund does—and does not—diversify

A fund tracking the S&P 500 provides exposure to many large U.S. companies. But in a market-cap-weighted index, a company’s weight reflects its market value relative to the index. A fund can therefore hold hundreds of stocks while a relatively small number of its largest constituents account for a large share of its value.

The August 31, 2026 snapshot from S&P Dow Jones Indices listed 503 constituents, with the top ten making up 37.8% of index weight and the largest constituent making up 8.1%. These are index-wide figures, not a fixed allocation, a forecast, or a measure of the technology sector alone. Check current fund holdings and weights when making a decision.

In other words, an S&P 500 fund offers broad exposure within large U.S. stocks, but it does not spread that exposure evenly across companies, asset classes, or countries. Owning additional funds does not automatically solve the issue: their largest holdings may overlap with the S&P 500 fund.

Start by mapping your whole portfolio

Before adding or selling anything, list investments across workplace retirement plans, individual retirement accounts, taxable accounts, and any other investment accounts. Include individual stocks, broad-market funds, and sector funds. Look through a fund’s holdings rather than judging diversification by its name. The SEC notes that funds can contain overlapping investments, so multiple funds may provide less variety than their labels suggest. See Investor.gov’s guide to asset allocation and diversification.

  • Identify how much of your portfolio is in stocks, bonds, and cash.
  • Check whether several funds own the same large companies or concentrate in the same industries.
  • Consider the purpose and time horizon of each account or financial goal.
  • Review costs and, before selling, the possible tax consequences in the account involved.

Ways to broaden stock exposure

Each of these approaches changes the type or weighting of stock exposure you hold. None is guaranteed to reduce losses or outperform large technology companies. Compare what it adds, how it overlaps with existing holdings, and whether its risks fit your plan.

Equal-weight exposure to a defined group

An equal-weight approach gives companies more similar weights than a market-cap-weighted approach, reducing reliance on the largest constituents within that particular group. It remains stock-market exposure, however, and its holdings, performance, costs, and rebalancing rules depend on the specific fund or index. Check those details rather than assuming that “equal weight” means low risk.

Smaller U.S. companies

Funds focused on smaller companies can add exposure beyond the largest U.S. businesses. They are still stocks, and adding them does not guarantee a smoother ride or lower portfolio risk. Compare their holdings with what you already own and assess whether the added exposure suits your time horizon and tolerance for market fluctuations.

Other industries

Adding companies from industries less represented in your current holdings can broaden sector exposure. A sector fund, though, may itself be narrowly focused; a different sector label does not by itself make a portfolio diversified. Review the fund’s actual holdings and the combined sector mix of all your investments.

Stocks outside the United States

International stock exposure can broaden a portfolio beyond U.S. companies. It remains equity risk, and the extent of diversification depends on the fund’s countries, companies, and overlap with your existing investments. Evaluate the actual holdings and costs rather than assuming that international exposure will offset U.S. market declines.

Consider bonds and cash alongside stocks

Diversification can happen both within an asset class and across asset classes. The SEC defines asset allocation as spreading investments across types such as stocks, bonds, and cash; the appropriate mix depends in part on time horizon and risk tolerance. Its asset-allocation guidance explains these considerations.

Bonds and cash serve different roles from stocks and have their own risks and trade-offs. Cash may be appropriate for a near-term goal, but it is not a universal substitute for long-term growth assets. Choose a mix that reflects when you need the money and how much fluctuation you can tolerate—not simply the recent performance of one part of the market.

Set a target allocation before making a change

A target allocation is a deliberate mix for your overall plan, not a reaction to a market headline. The SEC’s Beginner’s Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing says investors generally should revisit their allocation when their goals, time horizon, risk tolerance, or financial situation changes. It also explains that market movements can push a portfolio away from its target.

There is no universally right percentage for an S&P 500 fund or any alternative. A suitable allocation depends on your full financial picture, including other assets, account type, tax situation, goals, and willingness and ability to withstand losses. If you are unsure how a proposed change fits together across accounts, consider getting advice from a qualified financial professional.

Rebalance with costs and taxes in mind

Rebalancing means bringing your portfolio back toward its chosen target after market movements shift its weights. The SEC describes several ways to do that:

  1. Sell some of an overweight investment and use the proceeds to buy underweight investments.
  2. Use new contributions to buy investments that are below their target weights.
  3. Direct ongoing contributions toward underweight investments.

Buying with new contributions may help adjust weights without selling, but it may not be enough in every situation. Selling can trigger transaction fees or tax consequences, depending on the investment and account. The SEC says rebalancing tends to work best relatively infrequently; check your account terms and tax circumstances before acting.

A practical comparison checklist

When comparing a possible addition to an S&P 500 fund, assess the combined portfolio—not just the new investment in isolation.

  • Concentration: Does it reduce dependence on the S&P 500’s largest companies, or add more exposure to the same holdings?
  • New exposure: Does it add a different weighting method, smaller companies, other industries, non-U.S. stocks, bonds, or cash?
  • Overlap: Do its top holdings duplicate positions in your other funds or accounts?
  • Risk: Does the change merely shift equity exposure, or also change the mix of asset classes? A different stock allocation does not prevent market losses.
  • Costs and taxes: What are the fund expenses, potential transaction costs, and tax effects of changing your holdings?
  • Maintenance: Are you prepared to monitor and rebalance the investments? For any fund designed to adjust its mix over time, check its holdings, adjustment path, fees, and risks.

The SEC cautions that diversification cannot eliminate market risk: “Diversification can’t guarantee that your investments won’t suffer if the market drops.” Read Investor.gov’s diversification guidance alongside your own investment plan.
