Start with direct shares and depositary receipts, look through every fund to its underlying holdings, and check for repeated companies. Only then can you decide whether your main problem is China concentration, technology concentration, single-company risk or excessive equity risk.
There is no universally correct percentage to hold in China or technology. The appropriate mix depends on your goals, time horizon, risk tolerance, taxes, account type and other circumstances. The framework below is designed to help you make that decision without turning diversification into a market-timing trade.

What diversification changes—and what it does not
Diversification spreads money among investments whose risks are not identical. The SEC describes it as “investing in a variety of assets to lower the overall risk of your investment portfolio” in its Investor.gov Tips for 2026 bulletin. It cannot eliminate losses: a broad stock portfolio can still fall in a market decline, and investments that appear different can move together during a crisis.
A portfolio can remain concentrated even when it contains many line items. Ten Chinese technology companies create issuer and country concentration. A China technology exchange-traded fund (ETF) plus several of those same companies may create even more concentration through overlap. A global technology fund may reduce China exposure but leave you heavily exposed to the same sector. Adding bonds or cash addresses a different risk—overall equity volatility—than adding non-China shares.

Think of diversification as four separate questions:
- Issuer: How much depends on one company or a small group?
- Sector: How much depends on technology, internet services, semiconductors or another industry?
- Geography: How much depends on China, one market or one currency?
- Asset class: How much of the portfolio is in shares rather than bonds, cash or other assets?
A useful plan identifies which of these risks you are trying to reduce instead of assuming that any new security will solve all four.
Step 1: map your real exposure
Make an inventory of every account, including workplace plans, taxable brokerage accounts, retirement accounts and holdings outside your main broker. Record the security, number of shares, current value, vehicle, domicile, sector, country exposure and account location. Use the latest statement and fund materials available on the date you make the inventory.

Direct shares
For each individual company, calculate its percentage of the total portfolio: holding value divided by the value of all investable assets you are including. Also note whether the company earns most of its revenue in China, operates in technology, or has material exposure to either without being formally classified that way. A company incorporated elsewhere can still leave you with substantial China or technology risk through its customers, supply chain or operating subsidiaries.
Depositary receipts and other listed forms
A depositary receipt represents an interest in shares held through a depositary arrangement. Treat the economic exposure as exposure to the underlying issuer, not as a separate diversification bucket merely because the receipt trades on a different exchange. Record the underlying company, listing venue, currency and any conversion ratio shown in the security documents.

Funds: look through to the holdings
List every ETF, mutual fund and other pooled vehicle, then review its mandate, country and sector scope, top holdings, total expense ratio and latest holdings file. Multiply your ownership in the fund by each holding’s weight to estimate indirect exposure. For example, owning 8% of your portfolio in a fund whose largest company is 6% of the fund creates approximately 0.48% indirect exposure to that company before considering any other fund or direct position. Repeat the calculation for the largest issuers and for the technology and China portions of each fund.
The SEC’s asset-allocation and diversification guidance warns that owning several funds does not guarantee diversification when their holdings overlap. A narrow country or sector fund can preserve concentration even if it contains dozens of securities.

Step 2: define the concentration you want to reduce
Write a one-sentence problem statement before choosing a replacement investment. Examples include “my portfolio depends too heavily on Chinese internet companies,” “one issuer has become an outsized position,” or “almost all of my long-term assets are equities.” Each statement leads to a different remedy.
China concentration
If the primary concern is dependence on China, compare the proposed holding’s China revenue, domicile and index methodology with your existing positions. A broad international fund may reduce single-country exposure, but it can still include Chinese companies. A developed-markets fund may have little or no China allocation, but its exact country scope must be checked rather than inferred from its name.
Technology concentration
If you want less technology risk, adding another technology fund is not a solution even when it invests outside China. Look for exposure to sectors such as health care, industrials, consumer businesses, financials, utilities or other categories that are genuinely represented in the fund’s holdings. Sector labels differ between providers, so use the published classification and company-level holdings.

Single-issuer concentration
If one company dominates, spreading the position among unrelated issuers may reduce idiosyncratic risk while leaving your overall China or technology exposure largely unchanged. Check whether the replacement fund’s top holdings include the same issuer.

Equity and time-horizon risk
If your objective is to make the portfolio less sensitive to stock-market declines, consider asset classes such as high-quality bonds or cash that fit your time horizon and liquidity needs. The SEC’s guidance emphasizes that asset allocation should reflect risk tolerance and the length of time before you need the money. A short-term goal generally cannot absorb the same stock exposure as a decades-long goal.
Routes for diversifying beyond Chinese technology stocks
Spread exposure across issuers and sectors
One route is to replace a concentrated group with a broad-market vehicle or a deliberately mixed set of companies. Broad funds usually hold more issuers and sectors than a country or theme fund, but “broad” is not a guarantee: inspect the index rules, largest positions and sector weights. If a handful of mega-cap companies dominate the vehicle, you may still have meaningful concentration.
Use regional or global exposure carefully
Regional and global funds can add companies from multiple countries. Compare their country breakdown with your current portfolio and calculate the residual China weight. A global technology fund may diversify geography while retaining technology risk; a broad global equity fund may address both, but its China allocation, emerging-market definition and rebalancing rules still matter.
Add non-equity assets when appropriate
Bonds, cash and other permitted asset categories can change the portfolio’s response to stock volatility. Match the instrument’s credit quality, duration, liquidity and currency to the purpose of the money. A bond fund is not automatically low risk: interest-rate, credit, currency and liquidity risks vary. Keep emergency reserves and near-term spending needs separate from a long-term diversification decision.

Compare fund mechanics and costs
Read the prospectus and fee schedule for each fund. An ETF generally trades intraday at a market price that can differ from its net asset value, while a mutual fund is normally bought or sold at the next calculated net asset value. Trading spreads, commissions, redemption fees, securities-lending practices and ongoing expenses can affect results. The SEC’s international-investing guidance also notes that international funds can carry higher costs and additional operational risks.
| Route | Risk it may address | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Broad domestic or regional equity fund | Single-company and narrow-country exposure | How much China and technology exposure remains? How concentrated are the top holdings? |
| Broad global equity fund | Country concentration | What are the country, emerging-market and sector weights? Does it repeat your current issuers? |
| Non-technology sector exposure | Technology concentration | Are the industries genuinely different, or are technology companies classified elsewhere? |
| Bonds or cash | Overall equity volatility and liquidity needs | What are the maturity, credit, currency and inflation risks, and when will the money be needed? |
International-investing risks you must price in
Moving money outside China can reduce concentration but introduces risks that a domestic-only portfolio may not have. The SEC identifies several in its international-investing guidance:
- Currency: Exchange-rate movements can raise or lower your return in your home currency. Some funds hedge currency and others do not; verify the policy.
- Market and political conditions: Economic, political and social events can produce larger or different price moves than in your home market.
- Information: Accounting rules, disclosure timing, language and access to company information may differ, making analysis harder.
- Liquidity and cost: Trading may be less liquid, spreads may be wider and custody, withholding-tax or fund expenses may be higher.
- Legal remedies: Investor rights, courts and enforcement can differ by jurisdiction. A claim that is practical in one market may be harder to pursue in another.
- Controls and settlement: Governments can impose capital controls, trading restrictions or settlement procedures that affect access to money.
These risks apply to the particular security and market, not uniformly to every international investment. Read the fund prospectus, annual report and risk disclosures instead of relying on a geographic label.

Some U.S.-listed companies with China-based businesses use a variable interest entity (VIE) arrangement. In the structure described by the SEC’s September 20, 2021 Investor Bulletin, the U.S.-listed issuer may own a subsidiary that enters contracts with a China-based operating entity rather than directly owning that operating company.
The SEC warns that contractual nonperformance, or changes in Chinese law or regulatory practice, could affect enforceability. If the arrangements do not work as intended, the listed company could lose control over the China-based business and investors could suffer significant economic losses. This warning is limited to issuers using such arrangements; it is not a statement that every Chinese company or security has a VIE structure.
Best Value
For any affected issuer, read the risk factors and filings for the exact ownership chain, contractual rights, regulatory qualifications and disclosures about enforcement. Treat the VIE question as part of security due diligence, not as a reason to assume that every China-related holding has the same legal profile.
A practical implementation process
- Set the scope. Decide which accounts and assets are included and whether the goal is to reduce China exposure, technology exposure, single-issuer risk, equity risk or a combination.
- Calculate current weights. Use current market values and include indirect fund exposure. Keep a separate line for each repeated issuer so overlap is visible.
- Write constraints. Note the time horizon, liquidity needs, risk tolerance, tax basis, account rules, currency needs and any employer or legal restrictions.
- Screen alternatives. Compare broadness, holdings, overlap, asset class, costs, trading mechanics, currency policy and international risks. Reject a fund whose label does not match its actual holdings.
- Choose a method. Possible methods include directing new contributions to underrepresented exposures, exchanging part of an existing position, or combining both. The tax and transaction consequences depend on your circumstances.
- Stage changes deliberately. If selling would create a large taxable gain or if market volatility is a concern, discuss a staged approach with a qualified professional. Staging changes does not guarantee a better return; it changes the timing of market exposure.
- Document the decision. Record the intended role of each holding, acceptable concentration ranges and the conditions that would trigger a review.
- Review periodically. Recheck holdings, overlap, fees, fund mandates and personal circumstances on a schedule you can maintain. Rebalancing should follow your written policy rather than headlines.
The SEC’s October 5, 2026 World Investor Week bulletin notes that periodic investing can help mitigate volatility and cautions that short-term trading or trying to time markets might reduce returns. That guidance supports a repeatable process, not a forecast about Chinese technology prices.
Taxes, accounts and professional help
Tax outcomes depend on your country, residence, account type, cost basis, holding period, fund domicile and local rules. Selling an appreciated position can create a taxable gain; switching funds can also realize gains or losses. Currency conversion, foreign withholding tax and reporting obligations may apply. The available material does not establish a universal tax sequence, so obtain advice based on your own records before trading.

The SEC also notes that a foreign broker may not provide the same investor protections as a U.S.-registered broker. Confirm custody, dispute resolution, account protection and transfer procedures before opening or moving an account.
Illustrative overlap check
Suppose an investor owns three direct Chinese technology shares, a China technology fund and a global technology fund. The account may look diversified because it contains five positions, yet the same two companies could appear in all three forms. The investor can create a simple worksheet with one row per issuer, one column for each holding and a final column that adds direct and indirect percentages. A second worksheet can total exposure by country, sector and asset class.
This example does not imply a target allocation or a preferred fund. Its purpose is to show why counting tickers is inadequate: diversification should be measured after looking through pooled vehicles and grouping economically similar risks.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes and fixes
- Counting funds instead of holdings: Download the latest holdings and calculate issuer overlap.
- Assuming “global” means China-free: Read the country table and index methodology.
- Replacing China technology with non-China technology only: Check whether sector concentration remains the dominant risk.
- Ignoring indirect exposure: Include employer plans, broad funds and deposits whose value depends on a related issuer or market.
- Treating an ETF label as a guarantee: Review expenses, spreads, tracking approach, liquidity and top positions.
- Trading on a headline: Use a written policy and a review schedule instead of trying to predict short-term prices.
- Overlooking legal structure: Read issuer filings for VIE arrangements, ownership limitations and enforcement disclosures.
- Forgetting taxes and liquidity: Check the consequences of selling and keep money needed soon in assets appropriate for that need.
Decision checklist
- Have you included direct shares, depositary receipts and every fund?
- Have you identified repeated issuers across funds and individual holdings?
- Is the main risk China, technology, one company, equities generally, or several at once?
- Do proposed replacements genuinely broaden countries, sectors or asset classes?
- Have you checked currency policy, costs, liquidity, information quality and legal remedies?
- Does any issuer use a VIE structure, and have you read its specific risk factors?
- Have you considered taxes, account rules, time horizon and cash needs?
- Is the implementation method consistent with a documented policy rather than a market-timing guess?
