Also consider whether your overall mix should include bonds or cash, based on your time horizon and willingness to accept losses. No single allocation suits every investor, and diversification cannot guarantee gains or prevent losses.
Start by finding where the concentration comes from
List your direct stock holdings and look through the holdings of every mutual fund and exchange-traded fund (ETF) you own. A portfolio can appear to contain many investments while still depending heavily on food and beverage companies—for example, if a sector fund or several overlapping funds hold many of the same stocks.

Check each fund’s current prospectus, holdings, strategy, expenses, and liquidity. The SEC warns that a mutual fund or ETF “won’t necessarily provide diversification,” particularly when it focuses narrowly on one industry sector. Adding another fund name is not the same as adding meaningfully different exposure.
Broaden equity exposure beyond one industry
Spread holdings across sectors and company types
Rather than replacing a concentrated food-and-beverage position with a concentrated position in another industry, consider exposure across different industry sectors and types of companies. The SEC describes diversification within asset categories as well as between them; within stocks, that means looking beyond a single sector or company type. The aim is to reduce reliance on one area, not to predict which sector will perform best.

Consider company size and geography
Sector is only one dimension of equity concentration. Review whether your holdings are clustered in companies of similar sizes or in one geographic market. Diversifying across company types and geographies can broaden exposure, though it does not eliminate the risks of owning stocks.
Decide whether your portfolio should include other asset categories
Equity diversification and overall portfolio allocation are related but distinct decisions. The latter asks how much of the portfolio belongs in stocks, bonds, and cash or cash equivalents. The SEC says this mix depends on your investing time horizon and risk tolerance; its guidance does not prescribe a universal allocation for someone moving beyond food and beverage stocks.
Rank #2
| Asset category | General characteristics described by the SEC | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Stocks | Potential for growth, with greater volatility than bonds or cash equivalents. | How much fluctuation and potential loss you can tolerate, and when you expect to need the money. |
| Bonds | Generally less volatile than stocks, with more modest returns; bonds still carry risks. | Understand the risks of the specific bonds or bond fund rather than assuming bonds guarantee protection. |
| Cash and cash equivalents | Generally safer, with lower returns and inflation risk. | Balance liquidity and lower volatility against the possibility that inflation reduces purchasing power. |
As an illustration—not a recommendation for your portfolio—the SEC’s 2021 municipal-bond investor bulletin cites a common allocation approach of 50% stocks, 40% bonds, and 10% cash. Your own mix may differ because your goals, time horizon, and tolerance for risk may differ.
Choose funds by what they hold, not just what they are called
A broad-market fund can be a straightforward way to access many holdings, but verify its actual investments and how they fit with the rest of your portfolio. A sector fund may be concentrated by design, and multiple funds can own many of the same securities. Review overlap before assuming that adding funds has diversified your holdings.

Compare the fund’s prospectus, holdings, investment strategy, expenses, and liquidity. Fund costs reduce returns, so check current fee disclosures rather than relying on a past figure. Trading mechanics also differ: ETFs trade on exchanges during market hours, while mutual fund shares are generally redeemed at the next calculated net asset value on a business day, subject to applicable charges.
Rebalance to keep your chosen allocation on track
Market movements can cause portfolio weights to drift from the allocation you selected. The SEC describes two ways investors may review and rebalance:
Rank #4
- Calendar-based review: Check the portfolio periodically, such as every six or twelve months.
- Threshold-based review: Rebalance when an asset category moves beyond a preset deviation from its target allocation.
These are examples, not personalized instructions. The SEC says rebalancing tends to work best when relatively infrequent; it is not an endorsement of frequent trading. Consider tax consequences and any applicable transaction charges before making changes.

Diversification can help manage the risk of being too dependent on a small group of investments, but it cannot guarantee a profit or prevent losses when markets fall. As Investor.gov puts it, “Diversification can’t guarantee that your investments won’t suffer if the market drops.” Treat a broader portfolio as a way to manage concentration, not as insurance against market declines.

This is general investor education, not an individualized recommendation. Whether a particular allocation or investment is suitable depends on circumstances such as your goals, time horizon, financial situation, and ability and willingness to bear losses.
