Recycling and disposal rules vary by location; do not assume that guidance for CFLs or other mercury-containing bulbs applies to LEDs.
First, make sure the bulb is an LED
Check the packaging or markings if you still have them. LED bulbs differ from CFLs and fluorescent tubes, and the right disposal instructions may differ too. If you cannot identify the bulb confidently, ask your local waste authority rather than relying on appearance alone.

Philips Hue says LED bulbs do not contain mercury like CFLs and describes them as containing electronic components, glass, and metals. That is manufacturer guidance; materials can vary by product. An LED’s lack of mercury does not, by itself, determine how your local waste program classifies or accepts it.

How to find an accepted disposal option
- Ask your local waste authority. Contact your city, county, or municipal solid-waste program and ask specifically whether it accepts household LED bulbs, and what to do with broken ones. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends checking local authorities for available recycling options: EPA: How Do I Recycle Common Recyclables? and EPA: Frequent Questions on Recycling.
- Confirm the site’s acceptance before you go. A retailer, e-waste collection point, or mail-back program is an option only if it explicitly accepts LED bulbs. Ask about household quantity limits, broken bulbs, preparation, fees, hours, and any residency restrictions.
- Follow the instructions for that specific program. Use its stated drop-off or mailing method and packaging requirements. Do not infer LED acceptance from a program that advertises bulb recycling generally.
EPA’s list and guidance for recycling CFLs and other mercury-containing bulbs do not establish that a participating retailer or mail-back service accepts LEDs. The agency notes that accepted bulb types and retailer participation vary; check directly with the provider: EPA: Recycling and Disposal of CFLs and Other Bulbs that Contain Mercury (updated November 26, 2025).

What to do with a broken LED bulb
Keep a broken bulb out of curbside recycling and ordinary garbage until you have checked local instructions. EPA says broken light bulbs should not enter those streams and directs people to local waste authorities. Its detailed cleanup guidance on the mercury-bulb page concerns CFLs and other mercury-containing bulbs; it should not be treated as an LED-specific cleanup protocol.
Why local rules matter
There is no single disposal rule established here for every U.S. household. State examples illustrate why it is worth checking: New York State says LED lamps may be hazardous waste because of lead solder in circuit boards, while Washington State says LED lamps must be designated before disposal. These are jurisdiction-specific requirements, not a nationwide rule. Consult your own state or local authority for the instructions that apply where you live: New York State DEC: Hazardous Waste Lamps and Washington State Department of Ecology: Shop Guide for Dangerous Waste Management.
