How to Display the Current Video Title in an OBS 24/7 Stream

OBS can display a title from a text file, but an updater or integration is needed to show changing titles automatically.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add an OBS Text source above your video and enable its text-from-file option. That displays a title stored in a text file; to show the current title automatically as a playlist changes, you also need a plugin or another integration to update that file. OBS does not identify arbitrary playing video and update the title by itself.

Set up a title label in OBS

  1. Add a Text source: In the scene used for your 24/7 stream, add a Text source and place it above the video source in the Sources list. OBS Text Sources can display text from a file. See the OBS Project’s source guide.
  2. Choose the title file: Open the Text source properties, enable its text-from-file option, and select the file containing the title. Style and position the text so it is readable over the video.
  3. Decide how the file will be updated: If the title stays the same, you can maintain the file manually. If it should change with a playlist, configure a metadata-aware plugin or a script or integration to write the current title into the file. The Text source displays the file’s contents; it does not discover the title of whatever video is playing.

Make titles change with an OBS playlist

Use a VLC Video Source and a metadata plugin

OBS supports playlists through its VLC Video Source. The OBS Project says VLC must be installed for this source type to appear. If your playlist runs through that source, Tuna is a possible plugin route: its listing describes displaying currently playing media information, including information from a VLC Video Source. Check that Tuna supports your installed OBS release and operating system, and test whether it reads the title field you need before relying on it for a continuous broadcast. See the OBS Project’s media sources guide and the Tuna plugin listing.

Use a Browser Source for a custom overlay

Add a Browser Source and load a URL or local page, then set its width and height to fit your overlay. The page can render a custom title card, but it still needs a reliable way to receive and refresh the current title—for example, an integration that supplies the title data. A Browser Source is not a universal detector for titles from unrelated media sources. See the OBS Project’s Browser Source guide.

Choose the route that matches your setup

Route Best fit What to check
Text source reading a file A simple title label Identify what will write a changing title to the file.
Tuna with a VLC Video Source A playlist played inside OBS through VLC Verify compatibility with your OBS version and confirm the plugin reads the desired title field.
Browser Source overlay A custom web or local-page design Provide a dependable way for the page to receive and refresh the title.

Verify the title changes on stream

  • Check the actual stream output after a playlist moves to another video; do not assume the preview alone confirms what viewers receive.
  • Restart OBS and confirm the title still appears and updates as expected.
  • Test what happens when a video has no usable title metadata. Clear or replace stale text rather than leaving the previous video’s title on screen.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube 24/7 stream without keeping OBS or a home computer running, StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos looping from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it is not a camera-based live setup. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
