In a classic WordPress theme, put the_excerpt() inside the Loop in the template that displays your post list. In a block theme, add the Post Excerpt block to the relevant template—usually inside a Query Loop’s Post Template. WordPress uses a manually written excerpt when one exists; otherwise, it generates one from the post content.
Choose the implementation for your theme
| Theme type | Where to add the excerpt | How to edit it |
|---|---|---|
| Classic PHP theme | Inside the Loop in the template that renders the posts | Add the the_excerpt() template tag in the theme’s PHP |
| Block theme | In the relevant post template; for a post listing, usually inside a Query Loop’s Post Template | Add and configure the Post Excerpt block in the Site Editor |
The Loop supplies the current post to classic template tags such as the_excerpt(). In a block theme, the Query Loop determines which posts appear and their layout, while the Post Excerpt block renders each post’s teaser. See the WordPress Loop handbook, the Query Loop block reference, and the Theme Blocks reference.

Add excerpts in a classic theme
In the PHP template that outputs your archive, home-page post list, or other listing, place the_excerpt() inside the Loop where the teaser should appear. For example:
<?php if ( have_posts() ) : ?>
<?php while ( have_posts() ) : the_post(); ?>
<article>
<h2><a href="<?php the_permalink(); ?>"><?php the_title(); ?></a></h2>
<?php the_excerpt(); ?>
</article>
<?php endwhile; ?>
<?php endif; ?>This prints the current post’s excerpt, applying WordPress filters and paragraph formatting. The placement matters: inside the Loop, the template tag refers to the post currently being displayed. See the the_excerpt() function reference and the Template Tags handbook.

Use a returned value when PHP needs to process it
the_excerpt() outputs the excerpt directly. Use get_the_excerpt() when your code needs an excerpt string to inspect or process before output. It accepts an optional post ID or WP_Post argument. Take care outside the usual Loop context, particularly when WordPress must generate an excerpt automatically. See the get_the_excerpt() reference.
Add excerpts in a block theme
- Open the template that renders the post list in the Site Editor.
- For a list of posts, select or add a Query Loop and use its Post Template for each result.
- Within the Post Template, add the Post Excerpt block where the teaser should appear relative to the title, image, date, or other post elements.
- Select the Post Excerpt block to adjust its available settings, including excerpt length and the more-text label.
The core Post Excerpt block is dynamic and rendered on the server. Its documented attributes include excerptLength (default 55), moreText, and showMoreOnNewLine. Those settings apply to the block instance; see the Post Excerpt block reference.

Understand which text WordPress displays
- Manual excerpt: If an excerpt has been supplied for the post, WordPress uses it.
- Generated excerpt: If no manual excerpt exists, WordPress generates one from the post content. The function reference documents a default length of 55 words for this automatically generated excerpt; it is a default, not a universal editorial recommendation.
- Generated-text cleanup: WordPress removes shortcodes and tags and trims generated text at a word boundary, or a character boundary for languages where that applies.
- Ending marker: A generated excerpt receives
[…]by default. A manually supplied excerpt does not automatically receive that marker.
These behaviors are documented in the WordPress excerpt function reference.

Change the generated excerpt length
For a classic theme, WordPress documents the excerpt_length filter for changing the length of automatically generated excerpts. Do not assume that changing this filter will shorten a manually written excerpt: manual excerpts are used as supplied. In a block theme, adjust the Post Excerpt block’s excerptLength setting for that instance instead.

Choose between an excerpt and the More tag
An excerpt gives the theme control over where teasers appear and lets archive or index templates display excerpts instead of full content. The <!--more--> quicktag marks an author-chosen split in a post; for that split to be used, the template must render the_content(). Choose the excerpt approach when the theme should present a consistent teaser area, and the More tag when authors should choose where an individual post breaks. See the excerpt function reference.
