Notepad++ is great for reading and editing text files, but the real productivity jump comes when you can compare two documents at a glance. Whether you’re auditing a config, checking a diff before a commit, or reconciling changes in a log, side-by-side view makes spotting differences much faster.
This guide covers multiple ways to display documents side by side in Notepad++. Start with the built-in split view, then use the Compare plugin when you want an actual difference view, and finally use two Notepad++ windows when you need maximum flexibility.

With the right setup, you get faster navigation (jump to matching lines), fewer copy/paste mistakes, and a more reliable “sanity check” before you apply changes.
Prerequisites and what to verify first
Before you try any method, confirm three things: you can split the editor in your Notepad++ build, you have access to the Plugins Admin if you plan to compare, and you’re opening the correct file types.
- Notepad++ on Windows: You should be running the Windows installer build (not a portable build running in an unusual environment).
- Basic familiarity: Know where your View menu and Plugins menu are located.
- Permissions: If files are in protected folders, you may need permission to open both documents.
If you don’t know your version, go to Help > About Notepad++ and note the version number. Split view is typically available in modern builds, but the exact behavior can vary slightly.
Method 1: Use Notepad++ split view (built-in)
This is the closest thing to “documents side by side” inside a single Notepad++ window. The built-in split view divides the editor area into two panes so each pane can show its own document.
Split the editor into two panes
1) Open Notepad++ and load the first file in a tab.
2) In the menu bar, select View > Split.
You’ll now see the editor area split into two panes. If the split option is missing or disabled, jump to the troubleshooting section.
Load a different file in each pane
Once split view is enabled, you can load files into each side. The exact workflow is: focus the pane you want to change, then open/switch to the desired document.

- Click inside the left pane to make it active.
- Open the second file (either via File > Open or by dragging the file into Notepad++).
- Click inside the right pane to activate it, then switch to the other file (via tab selection or open dialog).
If you already have multiple tabs open, simply click the pane you want to update, then click the corresponding tab for the file you want to show.
Switching focus between panes
Split view only updates the pane you’ve focused. Clicking inside a pane changes the active side, and subsequent file switches (tab clicks, open commands) apply to that active pane.
If nothing appears to change when you click a tab, double-check you actually clicked inside the pane you expect. It’s the most common “it’s not working” cause.
Keep line numbers, wrapping, and highlighting consistent
For side-by-side review, consistency matters. Mismatched settings can make one pane look different (wrapped lines vs. unwrapped lines), which in turn makes comparing harder.

- Line wrap: Use Settings > Word Wrap consistently.
- Line numbers: Enable Settings > Preferences > Margins/Border if you want them on both sides.
- Syntax highlighting: Ensure both files are detected by the correct language mode (Notepad++ usually auto-detects based on extension).
Method 2: Use Notepad++ comparison tools (when you want diffs, not just side-by-side)
If your goal is “show me what changed,” split view won’t highlight differences for you. In that case, use a compare workflow—typically via a plugin.
Install the Compare plugin
1) Go to Plugins > Plugins Admin…
2) In the Plugins Admin dialog, search for Compare (the exact naming can vary by plugin authors).
3) Check the plugin entry and click Install.
4) Restart Notepad++ if the plugin installation prompts you to do so.

Compare two files and review changes
Once installed, the compare option will appear under menus such as Plugins or Tools, depending on the plugin. The typical workflow looks like this:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open or select the first file.
- Trigger the compare command (for example, a menu item labeled something like Compare or Compare with…).
- Select the second file when prompted.
- Review highlighted additions/deletions in the compare view.
Compared views are usually designed to reduce guesswork: you’re not just looking at two panes—you’re seeing what differs.
Common compare gotchas (encodings, line endings, file size)
- Encoding mismatch: UTF-8 vs UTF-16 can cause garbled characters or incorrect diff alignment.
- Line endings: Windows CRLF vs Unix LF may produce “everything changed” noise.
- File size: Very large files can slow diff generation. If it hangs, try comparing smaller sections or use a different tool for pre-processing.
If you see weird characters, check Encoding in the menu and set both documents to the correct encoding before comparing.
Method 3: Run two Notepad++ windows and snap them side by side
When split view is awkward—or when you want maximum control (independent zoom, independent scroll positions, different find states)—run two instances of Notepad++ and use Windows Snap Assist.
Open two instances of Notepad++
- Start Notepad++ as usual.
- Open the first document.
- Launch Notepad++ again (from the Start Menu search or desktop shortcut).
- In the second instance, open the second document.
If double-clicking files always reuses the same running instance, you can still launch a second instance by opening Notepad++ from the Start Menu again, then opening the file inside that second window.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse Windows Snap Assist to align them
1) Click and drag the first Notepad++ window to the left until you see the snap outline.
2) Release to snap it to the left half.
3) Select the second Notepad++ window from the Snap Assist thumbnails, then snap it to the right.

This gives you true “side by side” with independent scrolling and stable layout.
Set options so both windows behave consistently
- Search options: If you’re doing find/replace, ensure both windows use the same options (match case, whole word).
- Wrap: Keep word wrap consistent to avoid misalignment during review.
- Tab size: If comparing code-like files, ensure consistent tab settings in Settings > Preferences.
Method 4: Use multiple tabs with Split (when the goal is quick review)
Split view pairs well with tab workflows. It’s useful when you’re bouncing between a small set of related files and want two of them visible simultaneously.
Understand the limits of split vs. tabs
Notepad++ tabs manage documents, while split panes manage what each visible editor area is currently showing. That means your pane shows whichever document is active in that pane, not simply “tab order” globally.
Practically: you’ll click into a pane, then activate the tab you want that pane to display.
Practical workflow for tab-heavy files
- Open all candidate tabs you might compare.
- Enable View > Split.
- Click left pane, then click the tab for Document A.
- Click right pane, then click the tab for Document B.
- Use pane focus switching to keep changes and navigation on the side you intend.
Troubleshooting: split view not working or panes don’t update
Split view issues are usually configuration, focus, or build-related. Here’s the fastest path to recovery.
Check you’re using the right UI command
Look for View > Split. If you can only find “Unsplit” or the split option is greyed out, it likely means the current context doesn’t support splitting (or the UI is in a state where the command isn’t available).
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Try closing extra views (like document map panels) only if your UI seems unusual, then reload Notepad++ and try View > Split again.

Verify Notepad++ build and plugin state
- Check version: Use Help > About Notepad++ and note the version.
- Plugins: If you installed compare/diff plugins, they usually won’t break split view, but an extension conflict can happen. Temporarily disable third-party plugins if split stops working unexpectedly.
Encoding and line-ending mismatches
When “it looks wrong” (especially in comparisons), don’t assume the files are identical. Check:
- Encoding: Encoding menu (UTF-8, UTF-8-BOM, UTF-16 LE/BE, etc.).
- Line endings: If the plugin or workflow is sensitive, normalize line endings by saving both files with the same line ending style.
Large files and performance issues
With very large files, Notepad++ may lag when switching panes, opening files, or generating compare diffs. If you notice delays:
- Wait for the editor to finish loading before switching tabs.
- Consider comparing only the relevant portion (save a trimmed copy) for review.
- If using compare plugins, try a smaller input first to validate the workflow.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming tabs automatically control both panes: Only the focused pane responds to tab changes.
- Comparing with inconsistent settings: Word wrap, line numbers, and syntax highlighting can make differences harder to see.
- Comparing files with different encodings: This can create apparent changes that are really character decoding problems.
- Using side-by-side when you really need a diff: If your real goal is “what exactly changed,” compare tools are more efficient than manual scanning.
Frequently asked questions
Can I make split view show two different files that are not already open as tabs?
Yes. Enable View > Split, click into the pane you want to update, then open the file you want that pane to display (via File > Open or dragging the file into Notepad++).
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why does clicking a tab change only one side?
Because split view uses pane focus. Click inside the pane you want to update, then select the tab.
Is split view better than installing a Compare plugin?
They solve different problems. Split view helps you read two documents at the same time. Compare plugins highlight differences so you can review changes quickly.
What if I want side by side but can’t find the Split option?
First confirm you’re in the main editor view (not a special panel view). If it’s still missing, use the two-instances method and Snap Assist, or check your Notepad++ build/version and update if needed.
Bottom Line
If you want a clean, fast workflow, start with View > Split and load Document A in one pane and Document B in the other. It’s the quickest way to get true side-by-side reading without leaving Notepad++.
If your goal is auditing changes, not just viewing two files, install a Compare plugin and review highlighted diffs. And if split view feels limiting, two Notepad++ windows snapped together give you maximum control over scrolling and navigation.
