Google Maps for Android has started rolling out a UI refresh that affects two areas you use constantly: the floating action buttons (FABs) and the location button.

In recent Google Maps for Android updates, the floating action buttons (FABs) appear more compact. That usually means less padding around the icons and tighter spacing between the zoom controls and any other map overlay buttons.

What changed with the location button
The location button is the control that recenters your map on your current position and often indicates tracking mode. With this update, the button can look different in size, style, or how it behaves right after you enable location services.

- The recenter action may take slightly longer to lock in if GPS/Wi‑Fi location is still warming up.

Before you troubleshoot, confirm you’re on the build that includes these changes. Google rolls UI updates gradually, so two phones on the same Android version can look different for a while.
Verify Google Maps version
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Search Google Maps.

Zoom FABs
Tap + and – normally. If they feel cramped, reduce display scaling or try zoom gestures (pinch) until the change feels natural.
Location (targeting) button
Tap the location button to recenter. If the map keeps drifting after you pan, watch for whether the button indicates follow/tracking mode or whether it requires re-tapping after you interact with the map.

When a route or place card is open
With route previews and place details, the map UI can shift. Re-center and zoom controls might overlap with cards differently than on an empty map.
Adjust settings that affect location and map behavior
Even if the UI update is purely visual, your location experience depends on Android permissions and the device’s location providers.

- Open Settings > Location.

- If you’re driving, confirm you’re not using a tracking mode that stops following your position after you pan.
- If you’re in a transit or route flow, close the route card temporarily and test the location button on a plain map.
Troubleshooting: location button not responding
If tapping the location button does nothing—or it centers incorrectly—use these steps in order. Most failures come from permissions, stale location state, or UI overlays.
Restart inputs: permissions and sensor state
- Turn Location off, wait 10 seconds, then turn it back on.
- Force close Google Maps: open Recent apps, swipe Google Maps away.
- Re-open Google Maps and try the location button again.
Clear Google Maps cache (safer than storage reset)
- Open Settings > Apps > Google Maps.

Use Display size and font size settings
- Go to Settings > Display.
- Set Display size closer to Default.
- Set Font size to Default or slightly smaller.
- Re-open Google Maps and test tapping the zoom FABs.
Reduce display scaling and turn off extra magnification
If you’ve enabled extra zoom or magnification, your effective tap targets may not match what you’re expecting after the FAB layout changes.
Disable magnification temporarily and confirm whether the new FAB size is actually the problem or if an overlay is shifting the layout.
Disable screen magnifier / gesture assistants if applicable
- Open Settings > Accessibility.
- Look for Magnification, Magnifier, or gesture-based zoom.

Why does the location button recenter me, then drift again?
If you pan the map after recentering, Maps may stop following your movement until you re-enable follow behavior. Also, a weak GPS fix (indoors, cloudy weather, or low signal) can cause apparent drift.
Can I make Google Maps FABs larger?
Android doesn’t provide a Google Maps-only FAB size slider. The practical workaround is adjusting Display size and accessibility display settings, then testing the tap targets again inside Maps.
