To show viewers which video is playing in a YouTube Live loop, place the title as an on-screen overlay in the encoder scene and update it when playback advances. In OBS, you can read the text from a file, show a designed overlay through a browser source, or build an integration that reads the active item from your player. These methods affect the video viewers see; the livestream’s YouTube watch-page title is separate metadata.
Choose which title you want to change
“Now-playing title” can mean two different things:

- On-screen title: Text composited over the live video. Use this when the label should change as your loop moves to its next video.
- YouTube livestream title: The broadcast’s metadata on its watch page, which you manage in YouTube Studio. Changing an overlay does not automatically change this metadata.
YouTube’s instructions for looping a video or playlist describe playback for someone watching YouTube, not an encoder-based live stream that uses a playlist as its video content. Option 1: Read the title from a text file
- Add the video to your scene. Set up the source you use to play the loop.
- Add a text source above the video. In your OBS scene, add a text source and enable its option to read text from a file. OBS documents text sources that can use a text file; see the OBS Sources Guide.
- Choose a file for the label. Point the text source to a local text file. Put the current video’s title in the file, save it, and check that the text appears where you want it in the scene.
- Update the file as playback advances. Replace its contents with the next title. This is a straightforward manual method, but someone must make the update reliably each time the playlist moves on.
Before streaming, check how the overlay handles a long title, an empty file, playlist wraparound, transitions, and restarting OBS or the player.

Option 2: Display a browser overlay
Add an OBS browser source that displays a web page containing the title. This gives you more control over the label’s layout and styling, and the page can be driven by an integration. OBS documents browser sources in its Sources Guide.
A browser source does not know the current playlist item by itself. To update automatically, the page or a connected service needs a dependable way to learn which item is playing.

Option 3: Play a VLC playlist in OBS
OBS’s VLC video source supports playlists and looping, but requires VLC to be installed. See the OBS Media Sources guide. Using a VLC playlist alone does not establish that OBS will synchronize the active filename or video title with a separate text overlay; plan and verify that link independently.
Choose between manual and automatic updates

What to verify before automating
The right integration depends on how your loop is playing: an OBS media source, a VLC playlist, a browser player, or a separate playback computer may expose different information. OBS documents the relevant text, browser, and VLC source options, but those features do not by themselves provide a universal signal for the title of the active playlist item.

The YouTube Live Streaming API documents broadcast metadata, not the identity of a video playing inside a separate player. See the LiveBroadcasts API documentation. Do not assume an API change to broadcast metadata will detect a playlist transition or update your overlay. Treat the overlay and the watch-page title as separate controls unless you have tested an integration that updates both.
Test the result in the live preview
Before going live, run through the playlist and confirm the label matches the video viewers see. Check the first transition, the last-to-first wraparound, a missing or unusually long title, and what happens after a restart. YouTube recommends testing an encoder stream and checking its preview and stream quality before an event; follow its encoder setup guidance.

Troubleshoot common title problems
- The label never changes: If you use a text file, confirm that the source points to the file you are editing and that the new contents have been saved. If using automation, confirm that it can read the active item from this specific player.
- The title is wrong after a transition: Check whether the playlist has advanced while the overlay update has not. Test transitions and playlist wraparound rather than assuming the overlay follows playback.
- The overlay is blank: Check the text file path and contents, or confirm that the browser source can load the page that supplies the label.
- The watch-page title did not change: That is separate broadcast metadata. Update it through YouTube’s live stream settings; changing the on-screen label does not change it automatically.
- The VLC playlist plays but the label is unsynchronized: Playlist playback and title-to-overlay synchronization are distinct. Add and test a method to pass the active item to the overlay, or update the text manually.
