The redesigned menu and its controls are limited by Windows build and rollout, so they may not appear on every Windows 11 PC.
What the “Customize menu” tip does
The tip is a first-time teaching prompt for the redesigned context menu. It is different from the Customize menu command itself: that command opens a Settings page where you can adjust the context menu.

Microsoft introduced the redesigned menu to Insiders in Experimental build 26340.9212, announced August 17, 2026. The Windows Insider Program team later described the teaching prompt in its September 11, 2026 announcement: “We’ve added a new teaching tip you might see as a first-time experience to help you learn about the customization options.” Both announcements concern Insider builds; they do not establish that these controls are available on all retail Windows 11 installations. Microsoft’s August 17 announcement describes the command as a shortcut to its Settings page, while the September 11 announcement covers the teaching tip and the separate option to turn off the Customize entry.
Dismiss the tip from the context menu
- In File Explorer, right-click an item. You can also right-click an item on the desktop to open its modern context menu.
- If the first-time tip appears, select Customize menu. The third-party tutorial says this dismisses the tip and opens the customization page.
- Alternatively, hover over Customize menu and select Dismiss, if that option is shown.
These dismissal steps are documented by ElevenForum’s tutorial, not in the Microsoft announcements cited above.

Restore or change the tip with Registry values
ElevenForum also documents a per-user Registry method. Microsoft’s reviewed announcements do not verify these value names or settings, so treat them as third-party guidance. Editing the Registry incorrectly can affect Windows; change only the specified values, and consider exporting the key first so you can restore its prior state.
- Open Registry Editor and go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerContextMenuPreferences. - To disable the tip, set
CustomizeMenuTipDismissedto DWORD1. - To restore the default enabled state described by the tutorial, set
CustomizeMenuTipDismissedto DWORD0andCustomizeMenuTipSessionCountto DWORD0.
The path is under HKEY_CURRENT_USER, so the tutorial’s settings apply to the current user account.

Turn off the Customize menu entry separately
The Settings control for turning off the Customize context-menu entry is not the same as dismissing the teaching tip. Microsoft described that separate control in its September 11, 2026 announcement for Experimental build 26340.9482. Use it if your goal is to remove the command from the menu, rather than simply close the first-time prompt. The announcement does not establish that the setting has reached every Windows 11 build or device.

If the tip or controls are missing
- Check your Windows version and build in Settings > System > About.
- If File Explorer shows the older context menu or lacks the relevant controls, your installation may not have received the redesigned experience. Availability depends on the build and rollout.
- Do not confuse the absence of the tip with a disabled setting: the prompt is a first-time experience, while Customize is a separate menu command.
