Medibank Pet Protect offers up to 70% back on eligible veterinary bills, subject to a $10,000 annual benefit limit. That headline does not mean 70% of every invoice: exclusions, an excess and condition-specific sub-limits can reduce a payout. It may suit someone comfortable with a lower annual cap, but whether it is worthwhile depends on your pet-specific premium and the policy wording that applies to your cover.
What does Medibank Pet Protect cover?
Pet Protect is Medibank’s tier for specified accidental injuries and illnesses in cats and dogs. Its advertised maximum is $10,000 in annual benefits, with reimbursement of up to 70% of eligible vet bills. The insurer assesses eligible expenses under the policy; the percentage is not a promise to reimburse that share of every treatment invoice. Medibank’s plan overview explains the tiers and their terms.

In practice, the amount paid can be affected by the annual limit, the benefit percentage, any applicable excess, exclusions and sub-limits. A treatment being medically necessary or appearing on a vet invoice does not, by itself, establish that it is covered.

What are Pet Protect’s limits?
In addition to its annual cap, Pet Protect lists separate limits for several treatment categories. These can matter when a single condition requires costly treatment.
#1 Best Overall
| Benefit or treatment category | Pet Protect limit |
|---|---|
| Annual benefits | Up to $10,000 |
| Cruciate ligament conditions | $4,000 sub-limit |
| Tick paralysis | $4,000 sub-limit |
| Hip joint surgery | $4,000 sub-limit |
| Consultations | $400 sub-limit |
These are advertised limits, not guaranteed payouts. The policy’s eligibility rules, benefit percentage, excess and other terms still apply. Medibank says its higher tiers have no sub-limits for these listed categories, but those tiers have their own premiums and policy terms; a higher cap or reimbursement percentage alone does not prove better value. See Medibank’s plan details.
What is excluded, and what depends on the policy wording?
Medibank’s FAQ identifies pre-existing conditions and routine or preventive treatment as general exclusions, except where an eligible optional benefit applies. It also lists some elective treatment, breeding and obstetrics, and injury types outside the specified accidental injuries. This is not an exhaustive list: consult the relevant Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for definitions, exceptions and the full exclusions. Medibank’s pet insurance FAQs direct customers to the PDS for the full explanation.
Hereditary and congenital conditions are not automatically covered. Medibank says they may be eligible only when there were no noticeable signs, symptoms or abnormality before the first policy period or during an applicable waiting period. The condition and timing must meet the policy wording.

- Mortality or life insurance: Medibank says it does not offer this under these policies.
- Routine Care: an optional, non-insurance benefit that contributes up to listed limits for specified routine-care items; it is not unrestricted preventive-care cover.
- Extra Care: an optional benefit for Pet Protect and Pet Plus that can add cover for specified dental conditions and specialised therapies. It is included with Pet Max, subject to terms, and does not mean all dental care or therapies are covered.
Optional benefits are still governed by their conditions and limits. Check the applicable PDS and benefit descriptions rather than assuming a broad category is covered. Medibank’s FAQs explain the stated exclusions and liability position.
Which policy document should you read?
Use the PDS for your own policy cohort, not simply the first document returned by a search. Medibank’s useful-documents page identifies current plan documents for policies bought from 10 December 2024 and renewals from 6 January 2025, and lists separate documents for earlier cohorts. Confirm the policy’s start or renewal date against that index before relying on a term. Check Medibank’s policy documents.
The policy issuer also depends on when cover was first entered. Medibank says policies first entered before 30 August 2023, including subsequent renewals, are issued by Hollard and arranged and administered by PetSure. Other policies are issued by PetSure. Medibank promotes and distributes the product; it is not the claim decision maker. Medibank’s useful-documents page provides issuer information.

How do claims work, and what does the service data show?
Online claims can be lodged in Pet Portal. Medibank asks for an itemised tax invoice that is paid and shows individual treatment items and costs, plus payment receipts. You may include veterinary consultation notes if available; further documents can be requested. More than 1,050 vets across Australia can submit an electronic eClaim, and the online portal supports submissions and progress tracking. Medibank’s claims page describes these options.

Medibank reports an average of 22,600 claims processed per month in 2025. It also says 98.6% of claims were processed within five business days once all required documentation had been received, based on PetSure data from January to December 2025. These are company-reported processing figures, not a promise about an individual claim’s approval or timing. The claims page publishes the figures.

What do customer reviews and independent listings establish?
CHOICE’s public listing describes Pet Protect as “Limited injury and comprehensive illness cover for cats and dogs” and identifies PetSure as underwriter. Its numerical expert rating and detailed scores are member-only in the accessible listing, so they cannot support a public numeric score here. This is a feature-based review, not a personal claim test or a comparison using individual quotes. No representative premium is established by the available product information, so it does not support a blanket claim that Pet Protect is cheap or best.

Before buying or renewing, compare the policy against the risks and costs you would actually want help with. Request a quote for your pet and check the policy wording that applies to its start or renewal date.
- Compare the actual quoted premium for your animal, not a general price claim.
- Check whether the 70% reimbursement, $10,000 annual cap and relevant sub-limits leave an acceptable out-of-pocket share for likely treatment costs.
- Review the excess, waiting periods, exclusions and any conditions specific to your pet.
- Decide whether Routine Care or Extra Care’s narrowly described benefits address needs you value, while accounting for their limits and terms.
- Confirm whether the policy’s issuer and PDS cohort match your cover, especially if it began before 30 August 2023.
Pet Protect is most plausible for a buyer who accepts its lower annual cap and 70% reimbursement in exchange for the quoted premium. The product features alone cannot determine whether that trade-off is worthwhile for a particular pet.
