If clothing or surfaces may have been grossly contaminated with plague bacteria, handle clothing gently, wash exposed skin with soap and water, and clean then disinfect appropriate hard surfaces. Contact a medical provider or local public-health authority promptly if an exposure may be real: cleanup does not determine whether you need medical assessment. Plague is more commonly spread through bites from infected fleas or contact with infected animals than through laundry or surfaces.
First, assess the possible exposure
Tell a medical provider or local health department what happened, when it happened, and whether you had contact with an infected animal, a flea, or a person with pneumonic plague. The appropriate response depends on the circumstances; the available public guidance does not establish a single self-triage rule for every scenario. Do not delay seeking advice while you clean.

CDC identifies bites from infected rodent fleas and handling infected animals as common ways people get plague. Pneumonic plague raises a different transmission concern from contaminated fabric. What to do with clothes after possible plague exposure
For gross contamination
OSHA says that after gross exposure, personal decontamination can involve removing contaminated clothing and washing exposed skin with soap and water. It characterizes the risk of re-aerosolizing plague bacteria from contaminated clothing as low. Handle the clothing with minimal agitation: do not shake it or dry-brush it. OSHA: Plague – Controls.

For household laundering
Follow the garment-care label and your washer and dryer instructions. CDC’s general community-facility guidance recommends detergent, the warmest water setting appropriate for the items, and drying laundry completely. It does not prescribe a plague-specific temperature, cycle duration, or additive. Do not add bleach unless the garment label permits it and the product directions or public-health advice support its use. CDC: When and How to Clean and Disinfect a Facility (April 16, 2024).
How to clean hard surfaces
- Remove visible soil. Clean the surface with soap or detergent and water before disinfecting.
- Choose a suitable disinfectant. Use an EPA-registered product appropriate for the surface and the germ, and follow the product label for application and contact time—the period the surface must remain wet.
- Use products safely. Do not apply cleaning or disinfection products to skin. Never mix bleach with other cleaners or disinfectants.
CDC’s general household bleach guidance says regular, unscented bleach containing 5%–9% sodium hypochlorite can be used on many household surfaces when diluted according to the product label. If label directions are unavailable, CDC says to leave the diluted solution on the surface for at least one minute while keeping it visibly wet. When household cleanup is not enough
For healthcare, laboratory, animal-carcass, workplace, or suspected deliberate-release incidents, follow the responsible facility’s infection-control procedures and public-health instructions rather than applying household advice to a larger or specialized event. CDC’s plague emergency guidance says equipment used after transporting a suspected or confirmed plague patient should be disinfected using standard procedures and linens handled with care.
