You must disable the specific feature you do not want: stop Recall from saving snapshots, switch off Click to Do, narrow semantic search indexing, disable camera effects, remove or restrict the Copilot app, and separately control Copilot in Microsoft 365. The controls differ by device, Windows edition, hardware, account type and administrator policy, so a setting may not appear on every PC.
This guide gives the exact Settings paths, explains what each choice changes, and distinguishes stopping new activity from deleting data or removing a feature.

First identify which Windows 11 AI feature you want to stop
“AI running in the background” can mean several different things. Recall can save periodic snapshots after a user enables it. Windows Search on a Copilot+ PC can build a local semantic index. Studio Effects can process camera or microphone input while an effect is enabled. The Copilot app can remain installed and available through a key or shortcut, while Microsoft 365 Copilot has its own per-application setting. These are separate controls, not one service with one master switch.

Disable Recall snapshots completely or selectively
Recall is the most privacy-sensitive feature in this list because it can retain a visual history of activity. Microsoft says each new user must opt in to saving snapshots; if you did not opt in, snapshots are off by default. Recall is also preview-labeled in Microsoft’s support documentation, so labels and availability can change between Windows releases.

Turn off future snapshot saving
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Open Recall & snapshots.
- Turn Save snapshots off.
- Confirm with Windows Hello when Windows requests it.
This prevents new snapshots from being saved. Recall may still be present as a feature, and existing snapshots are a separate matter.
Pause saving temporarily
Use the pause control in Settings > Privacy & security > Recall & snapshots when you want a short-term stop rather than a permanent change. Pausing is useful before handling sensitive information while preserving Recall’s configuration for later. Resume it from the same page only when you deliberately want snapshots saved again.
Filter apps, websites and sensitive activity
Recall lets you exclude particular applications and websites. In Settings > Privacy & security > Recall & snapshots, open the filtering controls and add the apps or sites that should not appear in snapshots. Filtering reduces what Recall retains but does not remove the feature or guarantee that unrelated activity is absent from every snapshot. Review the exclusions after changing browsers, profiles or app versions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDelete snapshots that already exist
Use the deletion controls on the Recall settings page to remove saved snapshots. Do this separately from switching off Save snapshots: stopping future saves is not the same operation as erasing the history already stored on the PC.

Remove Recall from Windows
- Search Windows for Turn Windows features on or off.
- Open the matching Control Panel dialog.
- Clear the checkbox for Recall.
- Select OK and restart the PC when prompted.
Microsoft says removing Recall deletes previously saved snapshots. This is the most complete option when you do not want the feature available at all. On a work or school computer, an administrator can disable the checkbox or enforce a policy, so a greyed-out control is not necessarily a fault with Windows.
| Recall choice | Stops new snapshots? | Deletes existing snapshots? | Does Recall remain installed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pause | Temporarily | No | Yes |
| Save snapshots off | Yes | No | Yes |
| Filter apps or sites | Only for selected locations | Removes or excludes according to the filter’s scope; review the page’s deletion controls | Yes |
| Delete snapshots | Not by itself | Yes, for the snapshots selected by the deletion control | Yes |
| Clear Recall Windows feature | Yes | Microsoft says saved snapshots are deleted | No, until reinstalled or re-enabled |
Turn off Click to Do
Click to Do is enabled by default on Copilot+ PCs and cannot be removed. It does not continuously analyze the desktop simply because Windows is running: Microsoft describes analysis as beginning after you actively engage with Click to Do and ending when you exit it. It can work with Recall snapshots and, when you choose an action such as web search or Copilot, may send selected content to an online provider.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Privacy & security.
- Select Click to Do.
- Set the feature to Off.
With Click to Do disabled, its documented keyboard and touch gestures will not launch it. An entry point may still be visible in another part of Windows and can produce an error when selected; that does not mean the feature is secretly active. Availability varies by region and language, so a PC without the page may not support the feature or may be running a build where the rollout has not reached it.
Limit semantic AI indexing in Windows Search
On supported Copilot+ PCs, Windows Search can supplement traditional indexing with semantic indexing. Microsoft says the semantic-indexing data is stored locally, is not stored by Microsoft and is not used to train AI models. If your goal is to keep particular folders or file types out of indexing, use exclusions rather than looking for a global “turn off all AI” switch.

- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Choose Searching Windows.
- Open Advanced indexing options.
- Adjust the indexed locations and file-type exclusions for your needs.
Exclude sensitive folders, removable drives or file types that should not be searchable. The documented page supports selective exclusions; it does not promise a single switch that disables every semantic-search component while leaving all traditional indexing unchanged. Search results may become less complete or slower after exclusions.
Switch off Windows Studio Effects
Studio Effects are hardware-dependent camera and audio effects. Some PCs do not have the required neural-processing hardware, and the available effects differ by device. Microsoft also notes that some effects can materially affect performance and battery life.
Use Quick Settings
- Select the network, volume or battery area on the taskbar to open Quick Settings.
- Select the Studio Effects tile.
- Turn off the effects you do not want, or use the tile’s main toggle if your build provides one.
Disable effects for a particular camera
- Open Settings.
- Go to Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Cameras.
- Choose the camera you use.
- Turn off each listed effect.
If Studio Effects is missing, the camera, driver, Windows build or hardware may not support it. Turning off an effect stops that processing; it does not disable the camera itself or prevent an individual meeting application from offering its own filters.
Remove the Windows Copilot app or stop accidental launches
Uninstall the standalone Copilot app
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find Copilot.
- Open its More options (…) menu.
- Select Uninstall and confirm.
Uninstalling removes the standalone app. It does not disable every Copilot-branded feature in Microsoft 365, Windows Search or other supported experiences.

Change the Copilot key and Windows key + C shortcut
The app can be launched with a dedicated Copilot key or with Windows key + C. If you want to prevent accidental launches while keeping the app installed, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Keyboard and adjust the Copilot-key behavior available on your device. Taskbar settings also control whether the Copilot launch entry point is shown.
Hiding or unpinning an icon only removes one visible entry point. It does not uninstall the app, disable the keyboard shortcut or prevent another supported launch method.
Handle the “Hey, Copilot” wake word
Microsoft describes the “Hey, Copilot” wake-word experience as opt-in in its Copilot app material. If you enabled it, open the current Copilot app settings and turn the wake-word option off there. The exact label can vary by app build and account, and this app-level option is separate from Windows background-activity permissions.
Disable Copilot separately in Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Microsoft 365 Copilot is controlled inside each supported desktop application. The Windows Copilot app setting does not automatically change these controls.
Best Value
- Open Word, Excel or PowerPoint.
- Select File, then Options.
- Open the Copilot page.
- Clear Enable Copilot.
- Select OK and restart the application.
The setting is per app and per device. Microsoft’s documented checkbox is not available for work or school account sign-ins, and the page lists minimum app versions as of March 13, 2025. If the checkbox is missing, update the application if your organization permits it, verify the account type and check whether an administrator controls the setting. Do not assume that a hidden ribbon button means Copilot is disabled.
Understand the broader connected-experiences option
If the dedicated Copilot checkbox is unavailable, Microsoft documents a privacy setting for connected experiences that analyze content. This is a broader switch: it also disables features such as suggested replies, text predictions, Designer and automatic alt text. Use it only when you accept losing those other capabilities, rather than as a first-choice Copilot setting.
| Microsoft 365 approach | Scope | Collateral effect |
|---|---|---|
| Clear Enable Copilot | One supported app on one device | Targets Copilot directly |
| Hide or remove the ribbon button | Visual entry point only | Copilot may remain enabled through other controls |
| Disable connected experiences that analyze content | Broader Microsoft 365 privacy setting | Also disables several non-Copilot features, including suggested replies, text predictions, Designer and automatic alt text |
Restrict an app’s background activity when the app itself is the problem
Windows also has a general per-app background control. Use it only after identifying the application that is consuming resources or showing unwanted background behavior. This is not a Windows AI kill switch and does not replace Recall, Click to Do, Search, Studio Effects or Copilot settings.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then Power & battery.
- Open Battery usage.
- Select the app.
- Open More options and choose Manage background activity.
- Set Let this app run in the background to Never.
Microsoft says Never stops the app from running in the background, receiving notifications and installing updates while inactive. That can stop useful syncing or alerts, so do not apply it indiscriminately to system components or apps you rely on.
What to check when a setting is missing or locked
- Confirm the device class. Recall, Click to Do and semantic indexing controls described here are associated with Copilot+ PCs. Studio Effects depends on camera, microphone and processor hardware.
- Check Windows and app versions. Feature names and rollout status can change. Microsoft 365’s Copilot checkbox is version- and account-dependent.
- Check the signed-in account. Work or school policies can hide, lock or replace consumer controls.
- Look for administrator management. A greyed-out Recall option or unavailable policy page may be intentional device management.
- Distinguish hiding from disabling. Unpinning a taskbar icon, hiding a ribbon button or removing a shortcut does not necessarily stop the underlying feature.
- Restart when requested. Recall removal and some application policy changes require a restart before the result is complete.
- Do not confuse local and online processing. Semantic index data is documented as local, while Click to Do can send selected content online when you explicitly choose an action. Not every AI feature is continuously active or cloud-based.
Verify that the change took effect
- Return to the feature’s own Settings page and confirm the toggle remains off.
- For Recall, check both Save snapshots and the snapshot-deletion controls; one does not substitute for the other.
- For Click to Do, test its documented gesture only after saving your work; it should not launch the feature when disabled.
- For Studio Effects, open the camera page or Quick Settings and confirm the effects are off before joining a call.
- For Copilot, test the launch path you were concerned about, such as the Copilot key, Windows key + C or the app icon.
- For Microsoft 365, restart each affected Office application and verify the Copilot pane or commands no longer appear.
- For a background-activity restriction, wait until the app is inactive and confirm that its notifications and synchronization behavior match the trade-off you accepted.
The reliable approach is feature-specific: disable or remove Recall if snapshots are the concern, turn off Click to Do if its screen actions are the concern, configure Search exclusions for indexed content, disable Studio Effects for camera or audio processing, uninstall or relimit the Copilot app for launch control, and change Microsoft 365 settings inside each Office application. Windows 11 does not provide one documented switch covering all of these functions.
