You can disable a VS Code extension from its gear menu without removing it. Use Disable to keep it inactive in your normal profile, Disable (Workspace) to affect only the current project, or launch VS Code with code --disable-extensions . when every installed extension must stay inactive for one troubleshooting session.
Choose the right way to disable extensions
The best method depends on whether you are changing one extension or all of them, and whether the change should persist. VS Code keeps disabled extensions installed, so you can enable them again later.

| Method | What it disables | How long it applies | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Disable from an extension’s gear menu | One selected extension | Until you enable it again | Remove one extension’s behavior while keeping it installed |
| Disable (Workspace) | One selected extension in the current workspace | While that workspace has the workspace-specific setting | Keep an extension available elsewhere but inactive in one project |
| Disable All Installed Extensions | Every installed extension | Until you re-enable extensions | Broad troubleshooting from the interface |
code --disable-extensions . |
Every installed extension for that launch | That command-launched VS Code session | Quickly test a project with all extensions inactive |
| Empty Profile | All extensions and modified settings in the profile | When you use that profile | Separate extension and settings troubleshooting from your normal setup |
Extension enablement is associated with the currently active profile. If two VS Code windows use different profiles, an extension can be enabled in one and disabled in another.
Disable one extension from the Extensions view
This is the normal reversible method when a single extension is causing a conflict, changing editor behavior, or no longer needs to run.

- Open the Extensions view. On Windows or Linux, press Ctrl+Shift+X. On macOS, press ⇧+⌘+X.
- Find the extension you want to switch off. You can use the search box in the Extensions view to narrow the list.
- Open the extension entry’s gear menu.
- Choose Disable.
- When VS Code asks to restart the extension host, accept the restart so the new state takes effect.
The extension remains installed and appears in the Disabled section of the Extensions view. Its disabled state remains in effect across later VS Code sessions until you choose Enable.
What the normal Disable command changes
Disable changes the extension’s state beyond only the currently open workspace. The exact state belongs to the active profile, so the same extension may still be active when you switch to a different profile. This option is appropriate when you want the extension off for your regular work in that profile.
Disable an extension for only one workspace
Use workspace-specific disabling when a project needs a clean environment but your other projects still depend on the extension.
- Open the project or folder that should have the exception.
- Open the Extensions view with Ctrl+Shift+X on Windows/Linux or ⇧+⌘+X on macOS.
- Locate the extension and open its gear menu.
- Choose Disable (Workspace).
- Approve the extension-host restart if VS Code prompts for one.
The extension is disabled in that workspace while remaining available in other workspaces. If you open the extension’s gear menu from another project, its state can differ because the workspace-only choice is limited to the project where you made it.

When workspace disabling is the safer choice
- A language extension supports one codebase but interferes with another.
- A project has its own tooling and should not load a duplicate formatter, linter, or debugger.
- You are testing whether a problem belongs to the project or to an extension without changing your global setup.
Disable every installed extension from the interface
For a broad test, VS Code provides one command that turns off all installed extensions without uninstalling any of them.
- Open the Command Palette, then run Disable All Installed Extensions.
- Alternatively, open the Extensions view and use its More Actions menu to select the same command.
- Restart the extension host if VS Code requests it.
After this operation, extensions stay installed and are listed under the Disabled section. This is useful when you suspect an extension interaction but do not yet know which individual extension is responsible.
Re-enable everything after the test
From the Extensions view’s More Actions menu, choose Enable All Extensions. You can also enable selected extensions individually from the Disabled section when only some should return.

- Open a terminal in the directory containing the project you want to test.
- Run:
code --disable-extensions .
- Work in the VS Code window opened by that command. All installed extensions remain inactive in that window.
- Close the window when the test is complete. Open VS Code normally afterward to return to the usual extension behavior.
The final period in the command means “open the current directory.” Replace it with a project path if you are launching a different folder. The switch is launch-specific, making it suitable for a repeatable troubleshooting session without changing the persistent disabled or enabled choices in your profile.
What the CLI test can tell you
If a problem disappears when you run code --disable-extensions ., an extension may be involved. The command does not identify which one; narrow the cause by returning to a normal launch and disabling extensions selectively, or by using the interface’s all-extension command and then enabling them in smaller groups.
Use an Empty Profile for extensions and modified settings
Extension-only testing is not always enough. A changed setting can produce symptoms that look like an extension problem. VS Code’s Empty Profile disables all extensions and modified settings, giving you a separate baseline for troubleshooting.

Because extension states are profile-specific, testing in an Empty Profile does not erase the configuration in your regular profile. It separates the test from both installed extensions and settings you have changed.

Enable an extension again
Disabled extensions are grouped in the Extensions view’s Disabled section.
- Open the Extensions view.
- Expand or select the Disabled section.
- Find the extension you want to restore.
- Choose Enable to restore its normal profile state, or Enable (Workspace) when you are changing a workspace-specific state.
- Restart the extension host if prompted.
When you previously disabled everything, use Enable All Extensions from the Extensions view’s More Actions menu instead of restoring each entry one at a time.
Troubleshoot a disabled extension that still appears active
Confirm the command and scope
Check whether you selected Disable or Disable (Workspace). A workspace-only change does not disable the extension in another project, and a profile-specific state does not necessarily match the state in a different profile.
Check the active profile
Look at the profile currently assigned to the VS Code window. If you disabled an extension in one profile but are testing in another, the second profile can have its own enabled state. Repeat the change in the profile that owns the window where the issue occurs.
Best Value
Complete the extension-host restart
VS Code may ask to restart the extension host after a change. Allow that restart before judging the result; otherwise the previous extension-host process may not yet reflect the new state.
Verify the Disabled section
An extension that has been disabled remains installed but should be listed under Disabled. If it is not there, search for the exact extension entry and inspect its gear menu again rather than assuming that uninstalling or reinstalling is required.
Test all extensions at once
When the responsible extension is unknown, use Disable All Installed Extensions or launch code --disable-extensions .. If the issue continues with all extensions inactive, the cause is less likely to be an active extension and may instead involve the workspace, profile settings, or another part of the environment.

Disabling is reversible: the extension package remains installed, but VS Code does not activate it in the selected scope. Uninstalling removes the extension. Choose disabling when you may need the extension again, when you are isolating a fault, or when only one workspace should be unaffected. Choose uninstalling only when you deliberately want the package removed rather than temporarily inactive.
Quick Recap
A practical decision guide
- One extension, all projects in this profile: choose Disable from that extension’s gear menu.
- One extension, one project: choose Disable (Workspace).
- Unknown extension causing a problem: run Disable All Installed Extensions, then restore extensions selectively.
- One clean launch from a terminal: use
code --disable-extensions .. - Extensions and changed settings may both be involved: test with an Empty Profile.
- Return to normal operation: enable the extension from the Disabled section, or use Enable All Extensions.
Quick verification checklist
- The extension is still listed as installed.
- Its entry appears in the Disabled section after you switch it off.
- You selected the intended scope: profile-wide or workspace-only.
- You are testing in the profile and workspace where the change was made.
- The extension host has restarted when VS Code requested it.
- For a one-session test, you launched the intended folder with
code --disable-extensions .. - You know how to restore the extension before returning to normal work.
