There is no universal list of computer services that is safe to disable. A service that looks unfamiliar may support updates, audio, backups, sign-in, printing, networking, or another feature you use—and some services start only when needed. Identify the exact item and its purpose, check what depends on it, record its current settings, then make one reversible change and test the affected features.
Why “unused” does not mean “safe to disable”
A service can run in the background without being useless. It may be started on demand, or another operating-system feature may rely on it. The risk depends on the service’s purpose, its dependencies, your operating-system version and edition, and how you use the computer.

For example, Microsoft documents that disabling Windows Update services prevents update detection, downloads, and installation; stopping Volume Shadow Copy makes shadow copies unavailable for backup; and disabling audio services can impair audio devices and effects. Other services can affect sign-in keys, network access, printing, or storage management. Check the exact service and its documented consequences rather than applying a generic “safe to disable” list.
Microsoft’s Windows Server 2016 guidance is explicitly for that server configuration, and its Windows IoT Enterprise guidance is aimed at specialized fixed-function devices. Neither is a general recommendation for every Windows PC. Microsoft says its defaults balance performance, functionality, and security, and advises leaving services at their defaults when their impact has not been evaluated. Microsoft’s Windows Server service guidance and Windows IoT Enterprise service guidance make their scopes clear.

Choose a temporary test or a lasting change

Neither approach guarantees a speed or battery-life improvement. The official guidance cited here does not quantify a general performance gain from disabling services. Avoid making broad changes on the promise of a specific boost.
Use this decision process before changing anything
- Identify your system and its role. Note the operating system, release, edition, and whether the device is a personal computer, server, or fixed-function device. Do not apply advice for a different configuration.
- Identify the exact item and publisher. Read its description and consult the operating-system or software maker’s documentation. If the purpose or effect is unclear, leave it at its default.
- Check dependencies and features you use. Consider printing, networking, audio, backups, updates, accessibility, sign-in and security, remote management, and device-specific functions. A dependency listing can help, but it may not reveal every relationship.
- Record the current state. Take a screenshot or note whether the item is enabled, running, or set to start automatically, so you can restore the previous configuration.
- Change one item at a time. Make the smallest reversible change, then restart if appropriate and test the feature that the item may affect. Avoid disabling whole groups of core services.
- Reverse the change if something stops working. Restore the recorded setting, start the service if it was stopped, and test again. If you cannot confidently identify the cause or restore the setting, stop experimenting and consult the relevant vendor’s guidance.
Windows: use a clean boot to diagnose startup conflicts
For troubleshooting, Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure temporarily disables non-Microsoft services and startup items so you can look for a conflict. It is a diagnostic test, not advice to permanently disable every third-party service.

- Open System Configuration by searching for System Configuration or running msconfig.
- On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services before disabling the remaining services.
- Use the Startup tab’s link to open Task Manager, then disable startup items for the test.
- Restart and check whether the original problem remains. If you need to isolate a cause, re-enable items in a controlled way rather than making unrelated changes.
- When finished, return to System Configuration, select Normal Startup, and restore the services and startup items you recorded.
A clean boot can temporarily remove functionality, and network policy may prevent some of these steps. Follow Microsoft’s instructions for the applicable Windows version and keep track of what you disable: Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure.
Linux with systemd: disabling and stopping are different
With systemd, disable changes whether a unit is enabled for automatic activation; it does not by itself stop a service that is already running. stop stops the currently running unit. The --now option combines disabling and stopping, so use it only when you intend both effects.

sudo systemctl disable name.service
sudo systemctl stop name.serviceReplace name.service with the exact unit name. First inspect its status and dependencies; do not treat the example commands as a recommendation to disable a particular service. The dependency view covers loaded units and is not a complete inventory of every reverse dependency, so it cannot prove on its own that a service is safe to disable. macOS: review login items and background activity
For ordinary startup and background-app changes, use System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions. Removing an app from Open at Login prevents that login item from opening automatically. Background activity controls whether apps can perform tasks while closed; changing it may affect what those apps do. Review the app’s purpose before turning it off.

To diagnose a startup problem, Apple recommends making a list of login items, removing them temporarily, restarting, and adding them back one at a time if the problem is resolved. This helps identify a likely cause while preserving a route back to the original setup. Avoid manually deleting launch daemons as a routine consumer optimization.
