Save percentage (SV%) shows what share of shots on goal a goalie stops; goals-against average (GAA) shows how many goals the goalie allows per 60 minutes. They are useful because they summarize different parts of a performance, but neither accounts for shot difficulty or the defense in front of the goalie.
What does each statistic measure?

The NHL defines a shot on goal as a puck shot, tipped, or deflected toward the net that enters, or would have entered if the goalie had not stopped it. A shot that misses the net or hits the post without being stopped does not count in the shots-faced denominator. GAA is a rate adjusted for playing time, not a tally of all goals conceded. Why use both SV% and GAA?
SV% describes stopping efficiency
SV% expresses saves relative to shots on goal, making it a quick way to summarize how often a goalie stopped the attempts that counted. It does not show whether those attempts were routine or especially dangerous.
GAA describes the scoring rate
GAA relates goals allowed to minutes played. A lower GAA is favorable as a goals-allowed rate, but it can also reflect how well a team limited opponents’ chances, not just the goalie’s work. Seattle Kraken analysis

What these numbers leave out
Both stats compress a complicated performance into one number. SV% counts shots on goal but does not weight them by difficulty. GAA records goals and playing time, but does not distinguish a goalie’s responsibility from defensive breakdowns or the quality of the chances opponents created.
Shot context can include type, distance, angle, whether the chance came off a rush, and whether a pass across the play preceded the shot. Seattle Kraken goalie Philipp Grubauer captured the challenge of reducing those situations to a raw count: “How do you separate if somebody shoots from the blue line versus when there’s a guy in front of me who tips it?” The Kraken’s October 28, 2021 analysis

Metrics such as goals saved above average and expected save percentage can add shot-quality context. They are not automatically interchangeable: models may use different inputs and assumptions. Even advanced models cannot fully capture what a goalie read in a play or whether defenders fulfilled their responsibilities. NHL analysis

- Match the scope. Compare the same competition and similar time spans rather than mixing unlike seasons or leagues.
- Check the workload. Look at games, starts or relief appearances, minutes, and shots faced. A short run provides less evidence than a longer one.
- Consider the chances and team. Where available, account for shot type, distance, angle, rush origin, and pre-shot passing, as well as the defensive context.
- Read the advanced metric’s definition. Check the provider and inputs before comparing model-based figures; different approaches may not measure the same thing.
Is there a universal good SV% or GAA?
There is no timeless cutoff established here for what counts as a good SV% or GAA. League averages and scoring environments can change from season to season, so interpret a number against the relevant league, season, workload, and context rather than treating one threshold as universal.
