Choose the command for your Java Edition version
Mojang renamed the gamerule in Java Edition 1.21.11 as part of a change to namespaced, snake-case game-rule IDs. Use the command that matches the version running your world or server:

The gamerule names are case-sensitive in Java. On versions before the rename, enter announceAdvancements with the capital A exactly as shown. On 1.21.11 and newer, use the full lowercase, namespaced ID.
Turn off the message
- Check the edition and version. These commands are for Java Edition. Confirm whether your game or server is running Java 1.21.11 or newer before choosing the command.
- Make sure you can use commands. You need command permission in the world or on the server. In multiplayer, ask an operator to run the command if you do not have permission.
- Open chat and enter the version-matched command. Type the full command, including the leading slash and the value
false, then submit it. - Test the result. Earn an advancement or have another player earn one. The chat announcement should no longer appear. A top-right notification may still show.
What the gamerule changes—and what it does not
An advancement can produce two distinct notifications: a sliding toast in the top-right corner and an accompanying chat message. The gamerule controls the chat message. Setting it to false does not revoke or prevent advancements, and it does not establish that the toast will be hidden.

If chat is quiet but the toast remains, the command has done what it is meant to do. The remaining popup is a separate advancement notification, not evidence that the chat setting failed. This command is not a complete advancement-notification mute.
Check the current setting or turn announcements back on
Inspect the gamerule
If you have permission to run commands, query the rule by entering its name without a value. Use the ID for your version:

/gamerule announceAdvancements - Java 1.21.11 and newer:
/gamerule minecraft:show_advancement_messages
The command reports the rule’s current Boolean value. false means the chat announcement is disabled; true means it is enabled.
Restore chat announcements
To re-enable the messages, run the corresponding version-specific command with true instead of false. For example, on Java 1.21.11 and newer, use /gamerule minecraft:show_advancement_messages true.

Why the old command may not work
“Unknown or incomplete command”
First verify that you are using Java Edition, then check the version of the world or server. On Java 1.21.11 and newer, the old announceAdvancements name was replaced by minecraft:show_advancement_messages. Before 1.21.11, use the older name with its exact capitalization.
The command is rejected or unavailable
Check whether you have permission to use commands in that world or server. Gamerules are world- or server-level settings, not client-only preferences, so changing a local client setting is not a substitute. If you cannot run the command, ask the world owner or server operator to apply it.

The message disappeared, but a popup remains
This is expected: the rule targets the chat announcement, while the toast is separate. If your goal is specifically to hide the top-right advancement toast, this gamerule is not the documented fix for that.

Do not paste the Java command into Bedrock Edition. Microsoft’s Bedrock /gamerule reference does not list either announceAdvancements or show_advancement_messages, and Bedrock uses achievements rather than Java’s advancement system. These Java instructions therefore do not establish a Bedrock setting for suppressing achievement notifications.
For Java server operators
The rule applies at the world or server level, so an operator can run the appropriate command for the Java version to change chat announcements for that environment. Mojang publishes an official Java server jar, but the command itself is version-dependent: check the server version before using either the legacy or renamed gamerule.
