For a new SkyFactory 4 world, set level-type=topography and generator-settings={"Topography-Preset":"Sky Factory 4"} in server.properties before the first world generation. Run the 1.12.2 Forge server with 64-bit Java 8, start with about 4 GB of heap for a small group, and leave max-tick-time=60000 enabled. These values are a safe baseline—not a guarantee for every factory, player count, or host.

# SkyFactory 4 world preset
level-type=topography
generator-settings={"Topography-Preset":"Sky Factory 4"}
# Normal watchdog protection
max-tick-time=60000
Save the file, then create or rename the world only after these settings are in place. The preset is applied during world creation. Editing the file after a normal world already exists does not convert that save into a SkyFactory world; you must generate a new save or restore a backup.

What each property does
level-type=topography: selects the Topography world generator used by the pack.generator-settings={"Topography-Preset":"Sky Factory 4"}: tells Topography which SkyFactory 4 preset to load.max-tick-time=60000: keeps the normal Minecraft watchdog limit of 60,000 milliseconds. A server that cannot complete a tick within that period can be stopped rather than consuming host resources indefinitely.
Why the exact JSON matters
The generator value is a JSON string inside a properties file, so every brace, quotation mark, colon, capitalization choice, and hyphen matters. Do not replace the quoted preset with a guessed name or a different world-type label. If a control panel rewrites the file, stop the server, save the value, and reopen the file to make sure the complete string remains intact. Keep a copy of the working file with your backups so you can reproduce the same world-generation choice after a migration.

Why a server creates a normal world
A normal overworld almost always means the save was generated before the SkyFactory properties were entered, the JSON was mistyped, or the server is running a vanilla jar instead of the complete Forge/modded server pack.
Fix an already-generated save
- Stop the server cleanly.
- Make a complete copy of the world directory,
server.properties, configuration files, scripts, and mods. - Check the two world-generation lines character for character, including quotation marks, braces, capitalization, and the hyphen in
Topography-Preset. - Change
level-nameto a new directory name, or move the existing world directory out of the server folder. - Start the server and allow the new world to generate.
- Join with clients running the same SkyFactory 4 build.
Do not delete the old save until the new one has loaded successfully. If the original world contains important progress, restore the backup rather than experimenting on the only copy.
Check that the server is modded
SkyFactory 4 requires Minecraft 1.12.2 and its Forge/mod files, configs, and scripts. A vanilla server does not contain the mod-provided blocks, recipes, advancements, or world types. The server can expose the pack’s available world types through server.properties only when the modded stack is installed and actually being launched.
DarkPacks describes this release as offering “over 30+ world types.” That variety is why selecting the pack’s Topography preset is important: a generic level type cannot substitute for the modded generator and its preset data.
Java, Forge, and version compatibility
SkyFactory 4 belongs to the legacy Minecraft 1.12.2 ecosystem. Use a 64-bit Java 8 runtime where possible; Java 17 and Java 21 instructions written for newer Minecraft releases are not a conservative choice for this pack.
Confirm the Java runtime
Run this on the machine that starts the server:
java -version
The output should identify a 64-bit Java 8 installation. If your host has several Java versions, call the Java 8 executable by its full path in the launch script instead of relying on whichever java command happens to be first in the system path.

Keep every component aligned
- Use the same SkyFactory 4 release on the server and every client.
- Keep the matching Forge version and the complete server-pack files together.
- Do not mix a client-only installation with a partial server download.
- When changing versions, back up the world and configuration before replacing files.
A client that has a different pack build can fail to join even when the Java installation is correct. Keep a written record of the pack version, Forge version, Java version, and launch files used by the working installation. That record makes it easier to rebuild the server after a host move or a failed update.
Third-party JVM flags are version- and workload-specific. Flags documented for one Java 8 installation should not be copied as a universal performance recipe. Begin with a working Java 8 launch command, measure the server, and change one variable at a time.
How much RAM does SkyFactory 4 need?
There is no official DarkPacks RAM figure that guarantees a particular player count or factory size. A practical starting point for a small group is 4 GB of Java heap, then adjustment based on observed use. A deployment example using a 2,048 MB limit demonstrates that defaults differ; it is not a recommendation for every server.
Factors that change the requirement
- Concurrent players and how widely they spread through the world.
- Automated farms, machines, item networks, and large numbers of entities.
- Chunk loaders and dimensions that remain active when nobody is nearby.
- Garbage-collection pauses and the Java runtime’s overhead.
- The operating system, panel, database, and other services sharing the host.
Do not present 8 GB, 12 GB, or any fixed allocation as a guaranteed answer. Allocate less than the host’s total physical memory so the operating system can continue to operate. A server with abundant heap can still lag if one chunk contains an unbounded farm or entity pile.
Measure before increasing the heap
- Record the heap usage shown by your panel or Java process while the server is quiet.
- Observe usage during peak player activity and while large farms are running.
- Check CPU saturation and tick time at the same moment.
- Increase memory only when the evidence points to heap pressure rather than a single overloaded chunk or a CPU bottleneck.
More allocated RAM cannot repair a machine that performs too many operations in one tick, and excessive heap can make garbage-collection pauses longer.
Plan resources around the whole machine
The heap is only one part of the server’s resource profile. Leave headroom for the operating system, file caching, the hosting panel, backups, and any other services on the machine. A plan that advertises a large memory number but shares a heavily oversubscribed CPU can perform worse than a smaller plan with dependable processing capacity. When comparing hosts, ask what CPU is guaranteed, how storage limits are enforced, and whether the advertised memory is a hard limit or a burst ceiling.

Preventing and diagnosing SkyFactory 4 lag
Lag has several different symptoms. Distinguish delayed block updates and low server TPS from a client rendering problem, network latency, or a process that has run out of memory.
Use the server console first
- Look for repeated watchdog warnings, out-of-memory errors, or mod exceptions.
- Watch tick duration or TPS while the affected area is loaded.
- Compare CPU utilization with heap use; a saturated CPU and normal heap points to a workload problem, not insufficient RAM.
- Identify the dimension and chunk where the slowdown begins.
- Temporarily stop suspected farms, chunk loaders, or item-producing machines to see whether tick time recovers.
Keep watchdog protection at 60000 during normal service. Disabling it hides the symptom and can allow a runaway chunk to consume the process indefinitely.
Common causes and corrective actions
| Symptom | Likely cause | Useful response |
|---|---|---|
| Tick time rises in one location | Too many entities, dropped items, machines, or a broken automation loop | Locate the chunk, remove the source, and clean entities; do not simply add RAM |
| Lag increases as players explore | Many newly loaded chunks or dimensions | Reduce simultaneous exploration and unnecessary chunk loaders; monitor CPU and storage |
| Frequent Java pauses | Heap pressure or unsuitable allocation | Review live heap use, leave host headroom, and adjust gradually |
| Clients cannot join | Pack, Forge, or configuration mismatch | Install the identical SkyFactory 4 build and matching Forge-side files |
| Server starts vanilla | Wrong jar or incomplete server pack | Launch the Forge server supplied for the pack, not a vanilla jar |
Separate server lag from connection problems
If every player sees delayed interactions at the same time, inspect server tick time and CPU usage first. If only one player has a problem while the server remains healthy, investigate that player’s connection or client. A public server also depends on reachable networking, stable latency, and correctly exposed ports; a powerful Java process cannot fix a blocked route or a distant location.

Emergency recovery for a stuck chunk
If one chunk contains an extreme number of dropped items and the server cannot remain responsive, the recovery discussion for SkyFactory 4 uses a temporary watchdog override. This is an emergency procedure, not a performance setting.
- Stop the server and back up the world.
- Change
max-tick-time=60000temporarily tomax-tick-time=-1. - Start the server and load the affected area only long enough to perform cleanup. Keep players away from unrelated areas.
- Remove the dropped items. The documented example is
/kill @e[type=item]; use it only when you understand that it removes item entities in the command’s target scope. - Stop the server after cleanup.
- Restore
max-tick-time=60000before returning the server to normal service. - Repair or remove the farm, machine, pipe, or loop that created the spill, then restart and monitor tick time.
If the server cannot stay online even with the temporary override, work from a backup or remove the offending area with an appropriate world-management tool. Do not leave the watchdog disabled as a permanent workaround.
Backups and upgrading to another pack version
Back up before replacing mods, Forge files, configs, scripts, or the world. Include server.properties so the intended generator and server behavior can be reconstructed.

The SkyFactory 4 version 4.2.4 changelog warns that tomb behavior changed. Administrators are instructed to open old graves before updating and to use backups. Treat that as a migration requirement: have players retrieve items from existing graves, stop the server, make a dated copy, update, and verify the save before deleting the pre-update backup.
A practical backup checklist
- World directories, including every dimension used by the pack.
server.properties, whitelist, operator list, and ban files.- Forge, mod, config, script, and server-start files.
- A record of the Java version and SkyFactory release.
- At least one copy stored outside the live server directory.
Test that a backup can actually be restored. A copy that was never checked may be incomplete, locked, or missing a dimension. Keep the live server stopped during the copy when possible, and label backups with the date, pack version, and reason for the snapshot.
Self-hosting versus managed SkyFactory 4 hosting
Self-hosting gives you direct control over Java 8, Forge, files, ports, and recovery, but you must handle installation, updates, backups, monitoring, firewall rules, and network reachability. Managed hosting reduces routine administration, but you still need to verify that the service supports this legacy 1.12.2 stack and provides the controls required to recover a bad chunk.
| Decision factor | Self-hosted server | Managed server |
|---|---|---|
| Compatibility control | Pin Java 8, Forge, the exact pack build, and every config yourself | Depends on the provider’s supported Java, Forge, and pack images |
| Operational burden | You perform installation, updates, backups, port forwarding, monitoring, and recovery | Panel tools can simplify routine tasks, but backup and update responsibility varies |
| Resource profile | Limited by your hardware, connection, storage, and CPU scheduling | Check guaranteed CPU/RAM, storage limits, and whether host oversubscription is disclosed |
| Recovery access | Full console and filesystem access if you control the machine | Confirm console commands, file manager access, world backups, and the ability to clean a stuck chunk |
| Network reachability | You manage public IP exposure, firewall rules, latency, and port forwarding | The provider supplies network connectivity; verify location, latency, and protection policies |
Before choosing a managed SkyFactory 4 server hosting plan, confirm current 1.12.2 Forge support, Java 8 availability, resource limits, backup retention, restore procedures, server-console access, and the location of the machine. Ask whether you can download a complete world backup and whether support can help recover a chunk that prevents normal startup. Prices, availability, Java packaging, and affiliate terms change, so check the provider’s current offer rather than relying on an old plan description.
For managed modded Minecraft hosting, Godlike.Host’s modded Minecraft hosting provides a Pterodactyl-based game panel with a built-in mod installer and updater, one-click modpacks, and SFTP/FTP access.

First-session validation
Do not invite the whole group immediately after the first successful boot. Join with one matching client, confirm that the expected SkyFactory content and starting world load, then watch console messages and tick time while moving through the initial area. Stop and correct the installation if the server reports missing mods, generates an ordinary world, or begins timing out before players build anything. This small test prevents a bad preset or incomplete server pack from becoming the foundation of a long-running save.

Settings that should not be treated as universal
- RAM: 4 GB is a starting point, not an official requirement or player-capacity guarantee.
- Java flags: flags from another Java 8 environment may behave differently on your host.
max-tick-time=-1: emergency cleanup only; restore 60,000 milliseconds afterward.- World-generation edits: they apply to a new save, not retroactively to an existing world.
- Hosting plans: current prices, Java packaging, locations, and backup terms change and must be checked before purchase.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I put in SkyFactory 4 server.properties?
For a new save, use level-type=topography, generator-settings={"Topography-Preset":"Sky Factory 4"}, and max-tick-time=60000. Stop the server before editing and generate the world only after saving those values.
Why did SkyFactory 4 generate a normal world?
The save may have been created before the preset was entered, the generator JSON may be mistyped, or the server may be launching a vanilla jar. Back up the files, choose a new level-name, verify the two generator lines, and launch the complete Forge server pack.
Can I change the world type after the world already exists?
Not retroactively. Changing server.properties does not convert an existing save. Generate a fresh world or restore a known-good backup after making a complete copy of the old save.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →How much RAM should a SkyFactory 4 server have?
There is no official universal DarkPacks number. About 4 GB is a reasonable small-group starting point, but players, automation, loaded chunks, dimensions, entities, Java overhead, and other host services can change the requirement. Measure heap use, CPU, and tick time before increasing it.
Should I use Java 17 or Java 21?
SkyFactory 4 targets Minecraft 1.12.2 and the conservative compatibility baseline is 64-bit Java 8. Do not apply Java guidance written for newer Minecraft versions without confirming that the complete legacy stack supports it.
Should max-tick-time be set to -1 to prevent crashes?
No. Keep 60000 for normal service. Use -1 only temporarily while recovering an overloaded chunk, clean the dropped items or offending automation, and restore 60000 before normal play.
What must I back up before updating to SkyFactory 4.2.4 or another version?
Copy every world and dimension, server.properties, configs, scripts, mods, Forge files, and server-start files. The 4.2.4 changelog specifically warns about changed tomb behavior and tells administrators to open old graves before updating and to use backups.
Is managed SkyFactory 4 hosting easier than self-hosting?
It can reduce installation, port-forwarding, monitoring, and backup work, but verify current Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge and Java 8 support. Check CPU and RAM guarantees, backup retention and restores, console and file access, recovery options, location, latency, and current pricing before choosing a plan.
The Bottom Line
Use the legacy-compatible stack: Java 8, Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge, and the complete SkyFactory 4 server files. For a new save, set level-type=topography with the SkyFactory 4 generator JSON, start around 4 GB while monitoring real usage, and keep max-tick-time=60000. Back up before updates, and use -1 only briefly to recover and clean an overloaded chunk.
