To stop Windows 11 from adding a period when you double-tap the Spacebar, open Settings > Time & language > Typing > Touch keyboard and turn off Add a period after I double-tap the Spacebar. No extra software or hardware is needed. Microsoft’s Windows Backup Settings Catalog lists this exact control under Typing, in the Touch keyboard section.
Turn off the period setting in Windows 11
- Select Start, then select Settings.
- Select Time & language, then select Typing.
- If the page shows Touch keyboard as a separate subsection, open it.
- Turn off Add a period after I double-tap the Spacebar.
- Open any text field, such as Notepad, and type two words with a double tap of the Spacebar between them. No period should appear.
The setting’s name and its place under Typing > Touch keyboard are documented in Microsoft’s Windows Backup Settings Catalog. The step-by-step path above is the one that catalog describes; Windows updates can move options, so if the label has changed, search Settings for the exact phrase.

Where the period comes from
Windows adds that period through its touch keyboard preferences, which is the on-screen keyboard used on touchscreen devices. Microsoft describes the touch keyboard as a text-entry method used by tapping the screen with a pen or fingertip, as explained in Get to know the touch keyboard. That is why the control sits with the touch keyboard settings rather than with general text options.
The same catalog lists physical-keyboard text suggestions and autocorrect as separate preferences. Turning off the touch keyboard period does not change those. Use the table below to find the right control for the input method you actually use.

If a period still appears on a physical keyboard
If the period continues while you type on a physical keyboard, the Windows touch keyboard setting is probably not the cause. Check these sources in order:
- The application. Some word processors and messaging apps have their own autocorrect or automatic punctuation options. Look in that app’s proofing or typing settings.
- An installed keyboard utility. Third-party keyboard or input tools can insert punctuation on their own. Disable or uninstall the utility to test whether it is the source.
- Autocorrect and text suggestions. These are separate from the touch keyboard period option. Microsoft’s catalog lists them on their own, so changing them is a different decision from the one this article covers.
Microsoft SwiftKey is a separate setting
If you use Microsoft SwiftKey on a phone, the behavior is controlled by its own Quick period option. Microsoft’s SwiftKey support page, How does the spacebar work with autocorrect in Microsoft SwiftKey Keyboard?, says to uncheck Quick period to disable it. Unchecking it does not affect the Windows 11 Settings option, and the Windows setting does not affect SwiftKey on a phone.

If the option is missing
- Use the Settings search box and enter Add a period after I double-tap the Spacebar. If the result takes you to a different page, the option has been moved in your build.
- Check your Windows version under Settings > System > About. Microsoft’s catalog does not specify which Windows 11 builds show this option, so a missing control may be a version difference.
- If you use a touchscreen device, confirm that the touch keyboard is the one you are typing with. The period setting applies to the touch keyboard, not to a physical keyboard.
