How to Disable Crash Detection on iPhone

Turn off Apple’s Crash Detection response from Settings > Emergency SOS by disabling Call After Severe Crash. Here’s what happens on a paired Apple Watch and with third-party crash apps.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On an iPhone 14 or later, go to Settings > Emergency SOS and turn off Call After Severe Crash. This disables Apple’s Crash Detection alerts and automatic emergency calls. If the iPhone is paired with an Apple Watch, Apple says the setting is disabled on both devices.

Turn off Crash Detection on iPhone

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Emergency SOS.
  3. Turn off Call After Severe Crash.

Apple’s menu wording or layout can vary with the iOS version and region. The control is documented for iPhone 14 or later running iOS 16 or later. See Apple’s current iPhone guide.

Disable it from a paired Apple Watch

If you prefer to manage the setting on your watch, open Settings > SOS > Crash Detection, then turn off Call After Severe Crash. Apple says changing the control on one paired device automatically changes it on the other, so you do not normally need to repeat the process.

Paired Apple Watch Settings > SOS > Crash Detection > Call After Severe Crash Changes the paired setting on the iPhone as well

What turning off the setting changes

Apple’s automatic response is disabled

When Crash Detection is enabled, a severe crash can trigger an alert. If you do not respond, Apple says the iPhone can automatically call emergency services after 20 seconds. With Call After Severe Crash turned off, Apple’s crash alerts and automatic emergency calls are disabled.

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Satellite emergency calling is part of the same response

When Crash Detection is active, an iPhone may try to contact emergency services by satellite after a severe crash if cellular and Wi‑Fi connectivity are unavailable, where satellite emergency service is offered. Availability depends on the region.

Third-party crash apps may still receive notifications

Turning off Apple’s control does not prove that every crash-detection service on the phone is disabled. Apple says registered third-party crash-detection apps will still be notified.

Important limitations before you switch it off

  • Crash Detection is available on iPhone 14 or later with iOS 16 or later, and is enabled by default on supported devices.
  • Apple states that Crash Detection cannot detect all car crashes.
  • Disabling the control removes Apple’s automatic crash-response mechanism; it is not a performance setting and does not disable vehicle-installed emergency systems.
