Mozilla’s 2022 Crypto-Donation Reversal: What Happened—and Which Co-Founder Spoke Out

Mozilla did not ultimately begin accepting greener cryptocurrencies after its 2022 review. It paused all cryptocurrency donations in January, proposed accepting only proof-of-stake currencies in April, and said in June that every cryptocurrency donation would remain on hold because its payment vendor could not reliably distinguish the currencies and market volatility had worsened.

The founder identified in contemporaneous coverage as the critic of Mozilla’s donation appeal was Jamie Zawinski, not Brendan Eich. The available reports do not establish why Eich’s name appears in the supplied title.

Why did Mozilla stop accepting crypto donations?

The Mozilla Foundation had accepted cryptocurrency donations since 2014. During its 2021 year-end campaign, a reminder about crypto giving triggered internal and public criticism over the environmental cost of cryptocurrency and whether accepting it fit Mozilla’s climate commitments.

On January 6, 2022, Mozilla paused cryptocurrency donations and said it would review the policy. The decision followed discussion of the energy required by some blockchain networks, rather than a claim that every cryptocurrency had the same environmental profile.

At the time, TechCrunch reported a Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance estimate that Bitcoin mining consumed about 148 terawatt-hours per year. That was a contemporaneous estimate reported on January 6, 2022—not a current Bitcoin-energy figure and not a statistic about Mozilla’s own donations.

Who criticized Mozilla’s donation request?

Contemporaneous reports identify Jamie Zawinski as the vocal critic. The Register described him as someone who helped name the Mozilla project and as one of Netscape’s original developers; TechCrunch called him a Mozilla founder.

Zawinski wrote that “everyone involved in the project should be witheringly ashamed of this decision.” That is a statement of his opposition, not an independent technical analysis of cryptocurrency energy use.

Brendan Eich’s name should therefore not be presented as the established source of the call-out on the evidence available here.

What Mozilla proposed in April 2022

On April 7, Mozilla Foundation president Mark Surman described a proposed distinction between two transaction-verification models:

Model Mozilla’s description April proposal Operational result
Proof of work More energy intensive Mozilla would no longer accept these currencies Not accepted while the general hold remained in place
Proof of stake Designed to use less energy Mozilla would accept these currencies The plan was not implemented

Surman summarized the proposal this way: “Mozilla will no longer accept ‘proof-of-work’ cryptocurrencies, which are more energy intensive,” and “Mozilla will accept ‘proof-of-stake’ cryptocurrencies, which are less energy intensive.” Mozilla expected to publish an accepted-currency list by the end of the second quarter.

This was a policy direction under review, not evidence that proof-of-stake donations had started. The distinction also addressed energy use at the consensus-mechanism level; it was not a full lifecycle assessment of every asset, wallet, exchange or transaction.

Did Mozilla start accepting proof-of-stake donations?

No. Mozilla’s June update superseded the April proposal. A MozillaWiki Q2 update, last edited June 27, 2022, said the Foundation would continue holding all cryptocurrency donations until further notice.

Why the proposed filter failed in practice

  • The donation vendor did not provide a way to distinguish proof-of-stake currencies from proof-of-work currencies reliably.
  • Cryptocurrency volatility had increased, adding financial and operational risk to accepting and converting donations.
  • Without dependable classification at the payment-processing stage, Mozilla could not apply the April rule consistently.

Mozilla left open the possibility of supporting greener crypto projects later, but the June statement did not set a restart date or announce an accepted-currency list.

The 2022 sequence at a glance

Date Action or statement What it meant
2014 onward Mozilla Foundation accepted cryptocurrency donations Crypto giving was an available donation method before the controversy.
January 6, 2022 Mozilla paused crypto donations and began a review The review focused on environmental impact and compatibility with climate goals.
April 7, 2022 Surman proposed rejecting proof-of-work and accepting proof-of-stake currencies A proposed policy, with an accepted-currency list expected by the end of Q2.
June 27, 2022 update Mozilla said all crypto donations would remain on hold The vendor could not classify currencies by consensus type, and volatility had risen.

What the reversal does—and does not—show

It shows a policy could not be implemented as designed

Mozilla’s decision was not simply a reversal on the environmental distinction. The Foundation tried to turn that distinction into a donation rule, then found that its processor could not enforce the rule. The final 2022 position prioritized a complete hold over accepting currencies it could not classify confidently.

It does not show that every cryptocurrency has identical energy use

Mozilla explicitly contrasted proof of work with proof of stake. The June hold reflected classification and volatility constraints, not a finding that all digital currencies consume the same amount of energy.

It does not establish Mozilla’s policy in 2026

The latest primary update identified here is the June 27, 2022 MozillaWiki entry. It says the hold continued until further notice, but it does not establish whether Mozilla Foundation later changed its donation policy. A reader checking the current position should consult Mozilla’s live donation information or a newer official policy statement.

Bottom line

Mozilla’s 2022 crypto-donation story moved through three distinct stages: a January pause after environmental criticism, an April proposal to separate proof-of-work from proof-of-stake, and a June decision to keep all cryptocurrency donations on hold because the vendor could not make that distinction and volatility had increased. The founder named in contemporaneous coverage as the critic was Jamie Zawinski, not Brendan Eich.
