What Gemini Canvas creates
Canvas is an interactive workspace inside Gemini. It can produce a multi-slide presentation with a theme and relevant images from an idea or an uploaded source, rather than merely rewriting a paragraph. Google announced Canvas slide creation on October 28, 2025.
The generated material remains editable while the Canvas session is active. You can change text directly or ask Gemini to rewrite, expand, shorten, or reorganize sections before exporting.
Create a presentation in Gemini Canvas
Gemini Apps
- Open Gemini and start a new chat.
- Select Add Files, then choose Canvas.
- Enter a presentation brief. State the topic, audience, goal, approximate slide count, tone, visual style, and facts that must appear.
- Attach a source file when the deck should be grounded in a specific document. Tell Gemini to treat that file as the source of truth.
- Review the generated outline and slides, then edit them directly or request revisions in Canvas.
Gemini Enterprise Business
- Open a Gemini chat.
- Select Tools, then Canvas, or write a prompt that explicitly asks for a slide presentation.
- Provide the same kind of brief and any source material.
- Review and revise the result in Canvas.
Labels and available actions can vary by account and rollout, so the presence of Canvas or a particular export button is not guaranteed for every Gemini user.

Use a brief that produces a useful deck
A specific request gives Gemini constraints it can apply slide by slide. Include the decision or action the audience should take, not just the subject.
Create a 7-slide presentation for [audience] about [topic]. Goal: [decision or action]. Use [tone] and [visual style]. Include [required facts], one comparison table, and a final next-steps slide. Use the attached [file] as the source of truth. Keep each slide concise and flag claims that need verification.
- Topic and audience: identify the subject and the people who will see it.
- Goal: specify whether the deck should explain, persuade, compare, train, or support a decision.
- Length: give an approximate slide count.
- Visual direction: name a tone and style, such as a restrained executive look or an illustrated classroom theme.
- Required content: list facts, sections, examples, tables, or calls to action that cannot be omitted.
- Verification: ask Gemini to flag claims that need checking instead of presenting uncertain information as fact.
Ground the presentation in your own material
Gemini Apps can use an uploaded file as source material. The Slides-native workflow can use files from Google Drive and can also reference an existing deck when you want style matching. Grounding is especially useful for internal terminology, figures, policies, and brand language; still check every important claim and number before presenting.

Review the plan before generating slides in Google Slides
Gemini has a separate presentation-generation workflow inside Google Slides. Google’s help documentation says it can generate fully editable presentations, use Drive files as references, match an existing deck’s style, ask follow-up questions, and show a plan before generation.
- Open Google Slides and invoke Gemini’s presentation-generation feature.
- Describe the deck and add Drive references or an existing presentation for style guidance.
- Review the overview, sources, and proposed slide steps.
- Edit the outline, add or delete steps, and update the plan if needed.
- Approve the plan to generate the presentation.
- Refine the resulting slides individually, add slides, and make manual edits in Slides.
This workflow is designed for an editable, on-brand deck directly in Google Slides, while Canvas is convenient when you want to draft from a conversational workspace first.

Export and continue editing
Google Enterprise documentation updated July 24, 2026, says a document or slide presentation can be exported from Canvas for editing in a preferred application. It lists these formats:
- Google Slides: the practical destination for shared review, comments, and collaboration.
- Microsoft PowerPoint: useful when recipients work in Microsoft 365 or need a .pptx file.
- PDF: suitable for a fixed, read-only handout or distribution copy.
Export choices depend on the Gemini environment and account. If an option is missing, check that you are using the documented Enterprise Canvas workflow and that the account has the required Workspace access.

Enterprise prerequisites
Enterprise export and collaboration can require an active Workspace license and a connected Drive data store. These are environment requirements, not guarantees that every account will receive the same buttons or file types.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Access, language, and account limits
Google’s Slides help page says the native generation feature requires an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan. That documentation describes the feature as currently available on desktop and in English. Plans, languages, and rollout status can change, so check the feature in the account and region where you intend to create the deck.
