To temporarily relax BitLocker protection for maintenance, choose Suspend protection; to remove protection permanently, choose Turn off BitLocker, which starts decrypting the drive. Suspension keeps data encrypted but makes its key available in the clear while protection is paused. Decryption is not an instant toggle, and Microsoft advises against using it as a troubleshooting step.
Suspending BitLocker and turning it off are different
Suspension is a temporary change: the drive remains encrypted, but BitLocker does not validate system integrity at startup while protection is suspended. Turning BitLocker off removes protection and fully decrypts the volume. Microsoft describes the distinction in its BitLocker operations guide.

| What changes | Suspend protection | Turn off BitLocker |
|---|---|---|
| Duration | Temporary; protection can be resumed manually or after a specified number of restarts. | Permanent removal of protection for that volume. |
| Data encryption | Data remains encrypted. | The selected volume decrypts. |
| Protection while the change is in effect | Reduced: the key is available in the clear, and startup system-integrity validation is not performed. | Protection is removed as decryption completes. |
| Does decryption need to finish? | No. | Yes. The volume decrypts; this is not an instant toggle. |
| Does protection return automatically? | It can resume after a configured restart count, or you can resume it manually. | No. Turning BitLocker back on is a separate action. |
When to suspend BitLocker
Suspension is intended for a temporary maintenance window when a change to firmware, hardware, or non-Microsoft software could trigger a recovery prompt. Microsoft says users do not need to take action for its ordinary quality and feature updates. Its BitLocker FAQ and operations guidance distinguish those routine Microsoft updates from maintenance cases where suspension may be appropriate.

Because suspension reduces protection, leave it in place only as long as necessary, then resume protection and check the volume’s status. If you are unsure whether a particular maintenance task requires suspension, consult the instructions from the software, firmware, or hardware provider rather than decrypting the drive by default.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required

How to suspend protection temporarily
Use Control Panel
- Open Control Panel and go to System and Security > BitLocker Drive Encryption.
- Find the drive and select Suspend protection, then confirm if prompted.
- After maintenance, return to the same BitLocker Drive Encryption page and select Resume protection.
Use PowerShell
Run PowerShell with administrator privileges. To suspend protection on the C: volume until you resume it manually, use:
Suspend-BitLocker -MountPoint "C:" -RebootCount 0
Microsoft’s Suspend-BitLocker reference says that if you omit the reboot count, protection resumes after one restart. To resume protection manually, run:

Resume-BitLocker -MountPoint "C:"
Use manage-bde
From an elevated Command Prompt, use the suspend or resume operation for the intended volume. Confirm the target drive letter before running a command; changing the wrong volume can leave a different drive less protected than intended. Microsoft’s operations guide documents management using manage-bde.exe.
How to turn off BitLocker and decrypt a drive
Proceed only if you no longer need BitLocker protection for that volume. Decryption takes time, and the reviewed Microsoft documentation does not give a universal completion time; it depends on the drive and device. Check your Windows edition, administrator permissions, and any work or school policy before changing a managed device.

Use Control Panel
- Open Control Panel > System and Security > BitLocker Drive Encryption.
- For the intended drive, select Turn off BitLocker and confirm.
- Allow decryption to complete. The drive remains in the process of decrypting until Windows finishes.
Use PowerShell
In an elevated PowerShell window, target the volume you intend to decrypt:
Disable-BitLocker -MountPoint "C:"
This starts the process of turning off BitLocker on that volume; it does not merely suspend protection.

A recovery key unlocks a drive; it does not disable BitLocker
A BitLocker recovery password or recovery key is used to unlock a protected drive when Windows asks for recovery. Unlocking restores access; it does not decrypt the volume or turn off protection. Microsoft documents unlocking separately in its manage-bde unlock reference. If your immediate problem is a recovery prompt, use the recovery key to regain access rather than turning off encryption as a substitute.
Check your Windows edition and permissions
Microsoft’s operations guide covers Windows 10 and Windows 11 as well as listed Windows Server releases, but the controls available to you can depend on edition, administrator rights, and organizational policy. On a managed work or school device, contact your administrator before suspending or turning off protection. Use the interface or command route permitted for your device, and verify the volume letter before issuing a command.
Verify the outcome
After temporary maintenance, return to BitLocker Drive Encryption or check the volume’s status with the available BitLocker management tools to confirm protection is active again. After choosing to turn BitLocker off, allow decryption to finish and verify the volume status rather than assuming the command completed the change immediately. Do not use decryption as a general troubleshooting measure: Microsoft recommends decrypting only when protection is no longer required.
