These are separate behaviors: turning off the display does not necessarily lock your session, and disabling screen locking does not stop the computer from suspending. Check AC and battery settings separately, and handle laptop lid actions independently.
First identify what is happening
A dark display alone does not tell you whether Linux has suspended or locked the session. Identify your desktop environment and release, then note whether the issue happens on AC power, battery, or only after closing the lid.
- Screen blanking: the display turns off or goes blank; the session may remain unlocked.
- Screen locking: the session requires authentication to resume.
- Automatic suspend: the computer enters a low-power sleep state after inactivity.
- Lid or hardware-key action: a physical event triggers an action, independently of the idle timeout.
GNOME Help and the KDE Plasma 6 handbook treat these as separate controls (GNOME Help; KDE Plasma power-management handbook).
How do I stop Linux from suspending when idle?
GNOME
- Open Activities, search for Power, and open the Power panel.
- Find the inactivity action in the power settings and set it to Nothing for each power source where you want to prevent automatic suspend. GNOME has separate AC and battery settings, so check both if needed.
The exact labels can vary by GNOME release and distribution. GNOME’s System Administration Guide documents separate action keys for AC and battery and uses the value nothing to disable the action (GNOME System Administration Guide).

KDE Plasma 6
Open System Settings → Power Management. Under Suspend Session, set the inactivity action to Do nothing. This changes the suspend behavior, not screen blanking or automatic locking.
This path follows the stable KF6 handbook; distribution packaging and Plasma versions may change labels or layout. If the wording differs, search System Settings for “Power Management.” (KDE Plasma power-management handbook)

How do I stop my screen from locking automatically?
Change the screen-lock setting separately from the suspend setting. In GNOME, use the screen-lock settings for your installed release; disabling screen blanking in the Power panel does not itself disable automatic locking. In KDE Plasma 6, open System Settings → Screen Locking and adjust its inactivity behavior. The screen-lock module has its own timer, separate from Power Management.
If you only want the display to stay on, change screen blanking instead. In GNOME, open Activities → Power and set Screen Blank under Power Saving Options to disabled. This keeps blanking from being the cause of a dark screen, but does not by itself change locking or suspend. (GNOME Help: Set screen blanking time; KDE Plasma power-management handbook)

How do I keep my laptop awake when the lid is closed?
Lid-close behavior is an event-triggered action, not an idle timeout. First use your desktop’s power controls to find the lid action and change it if that option is available. A desktop environment may manage lid handling itself, so changing systemd-logind settings may not override it.
At the system level, HandleLidSwitch= in logind.conf concerns lid events; the cited systemd manual lists suspend as its default. The actual result depends on the installed systemd version, local configuration, and whether a desktop holds an inhibitor lock for lid handling. Changing system-wide configuration may require administrator privileges and affect all users. Consult the installed manual before editing it. When to check systemd-logind
If a desktop setting does not explain the behavior, systemd-logind is one possible layer to examine. Its IdleAction= controls a system-idle action and defaults to ignore in the cited manual. For a configured action to occur, sessions must report idle, all sessions must be idle, no idle inhibitor lock can be active, and the IdleActionSec= interval must elapse. If IdleAction= is already ignore, that logind mechanism is not causing the automatic suspend.
Desktop environments can hold low-level inhibitor locks for power and sleep keys or lid events. When a relevant lock is held, logind’s corresponding Handle* setting does not control that event. Inhibitors have legitimate application uses, but systemd warns that misuse of idle-blocking locks can prevent mobile devices from suspending automatically and harm battery life. A temporary systemd-inhibit command is not a permanent replacement for changing the desktop’s idle preference. (systemd logind.conf manual; systemd inhibitor documentation)

For managed GNOME computers
An administrator can enforce GNOME power preferences with dconf policy. GNOME documents policy files under /etc/dconf/profile/user and /etc/dconf/db/<database>.d/; administrators can set and lock relevant keys, then run dconf update. Users must log out and back in for system-wide settings to take effect.
Use the policy value and keys that match the intended behavior. The guide’s example concerns automatic logout after a timeout; that is not the setting to copy when the goal is to prevent suspend. (GNOME System Administration Guide)
Quick Recap
Check the result under the same conditions
- Confirm which desktop environment and release you are using; these steps are not universal across Linux desktops.
- Check both AC and battery settings if the behavior occurs in both states.
- Test whether the display blanks, the session locks, or the computer suspends; these outcomes point to different controls.
- If it happens when you close the lid, investigate the lid action rather than only the idle timeout.
- On a managed GNOME system, check whether dconf policy locks the setting and whether you logged out and back in after a policy change.
- If examining logind, check the installed systemd version and whether the desktop holds a relevant inhibitor lock.
