Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You can capture a printed book with an overhead scanner or, where permitted, a library scanner or camera—but owning the paper copy does not automatically give you clear legal permission to reproduce the entire copyrighted book. Check the book’s copyright status and the rules that apply to your intended use before scanning. If you proceed, support the binding rather than forcing the book flat, and keep the resulting files private unless sharing is authorized.
Check whether you may make the copy
This guidance is grounded in U.S. sources and is general information, not individualized legal advice. The Library of Congress explains that books are protected by copyright and that U.S. fair use is assessed case by case. The four factors are the purpose and character of the use, the nature of the work, the amount used, and the effect on the work’s potential market or value. A personal-access purpose by itself does not settle the analysis, and the sources do not establish a general personal-copying exception for scanning a complete book.

Making a copy for private access is distinct from distributing it, uploading it, or sharing it with others; do not assume either is allowed merely because you own the physical book. Copyright generally applies automatically when a work is created and fixed, though rules differ for works created before March 1989. A book’s age or lack of a copyright notice is not enough by itself to establish that it is in the public domain. Verify its status and consider the specific use before proceeding. See the Library of Congress copyright guidance and the U.S. Copyright Office Fair Use FAQ.
Choose a capture method that fits the book
For a bound volume, overhead capture can reduce the need to press the book open against a flat surface. A dedicated overhead book scanner is one option if you scan regularly, but no particular model, resolution, speed, OCR performance, or cost is established here. For occasional use, ask a local library whether it provides a scanner or allows personal camera use. A flatbed scanner may require opening and pressing down a book, which can be unsafe for a tight or fragile binding.

- Patented Flattening Curved Book Page Technology: Shine Ultra applies CZUR’s patented technology to flatten the curved surface after pixel transformation to flattening of the book page (Only suitable for thinner books, ET series is recommended for thicker books)
- High Resolution & AI Tech: CMOS 13MP (4160*3120, A4≈340 AND A3≈245 DPI) camera. Smart Paging and Auto Cropping; Combine Sides; Stamp Mode; and Multiple Color Modes
- Height Adjustable & Portable: 2-level height adjustable neck. 90 degree foldable and lightweight 4 lbs with foot pedal for convenient operation
Choose based on the book and what you need from the file—not on a single scanner being best for everyone:
- Binding and opening angle: Avoid equipment or methods that require a volume to lie flat when it cannot safely do so.
- Page count and frequency: A library option may suit an occasional project; frequent scanning may make a home overhead setup more practical.
- Image or text access: Decide whether page images are sufficient or whether you need searchable text. OCR results depend on the setup and book; no accuracy figure is established here.
- Size and foldouts: Check that the capture area can accommodate the book, and do not remove foldouts.
- Access and cost: Compare equipment access and total cost for your situation; no verified price comparison is available here.
Protect the binding and pages during capture
The Library of Congress preservation guidance warns: “Don’t apply pressure to books in order to flatten them for image capture.” Pressure can break a spine or loosen or break brittle pages. For books with weak joints or restricted openings, it recommends a book cradle—such as blocks or rolls of polyethylene foam—during image capture. A cradle supports the volume; it is not a reason to force it open farther than it will safely go. For a fragile book that will not open safely, stop and ask a conservator or experienced library professional for advice. Read the Library of Congress preservation guidelines for digitizing library materials.

- Scanner + Smart Lamp: Glare-free, Non-flickering and Easy-to-Eyes 4 color temperature settings. Controlled by CZUR APP. Sound-control Technology, no Wifi and Bluetooth connection needed
- 32 LED Light+2 Supplemental Side Light: Giving the best lighting condition for both scanning and reading
- Flattening Curved Book Page Technology: It utilizes three precise laser lines for incredible scanning accuracy and image clarity. This gives the Aura the ability to scan and exactly replicate the individual flat pages of curved books.AI technology incorporated in the software makes scanning and image processing smarter and simpler
- Inspect the book. Check the binding, joints, and paper before starting. Do not force the book open, and handle brittle pages carefully.
- Set up support. Use a capture arrangement that holds the book securely without pressing the spine flat. Consider a cradle for weak joints or limited opening.
- Prepare the workspace. Use a clean, roomy, dry surface and keep food and drink away from the book.
- Capture without altering the book. Keep foldouts in place and stop if a page or joint resists safe handling.
- Save files only for an allowed use. Organize page images into a document only if the applicable rules permit the copying and intended access.
- Keep the files private unless sharing is authorized. Do not post or distribute a digital copy without establishing that you may do so.
Ask the library before using its equipment
Library scanning rules are local. The Library of Congress says each research center sets policies for personal laptops, scanners, and digital cameras; copying may also depend on an item’s physical condition, and copyright restrictions still apply. Those practices are an example, not a guarantee that another library will offer the same equipment or permissions. Before bringing a book, check that specific library’s equipment rules, item-handling requirements, and copyright policy. The Library of Congress describes its research-center arrangements in General Scanning & Copying.
