Use shot time to compare attempts, but let taste decide whether the result works for your coffee and preferences.
Start with your specific Lelit model and basket
Lelit machines do not all use the same group, baskets, or controls. Check the model name and the basket supplied with it before choosing a dose or buying accessories. Lelit’s Anna PL41TEM, for example, has a LELIT57 group and is listed with a 7–9 g single basket and a 14–18 g double basket. Those capacities are specific to the supplied Anna baskets, not a universal Lelit dose.

The controls also vary by model. The Anna PL41TEM has a PID boiler temperature controller, an extraction pressure gauge, and a three-way solenoid valve. Lelit says the gauge’s green area marks the optimal pressure range; that description does not establish a precise pressure target for every shot.
The Victoria PL91T product sheet lists a LELIT58 commercial group, a display for coffee, steam, and hot-water temperature, and an ascending extraction timer. It also says the Victoria can activate pre-infusion and includes single and double baskets plus an IMS blind filter. Treat those as Victoria-specific features unless your own model’s documentation confirms them.

Lelit’s catalog includes machines with built-in grinders as well as machines without them. Use the grinder controls on your own machine if it has an integrated grinder; otherwise, adjust your separate grinder. In either case, confirm that your setup can grind finely enough for espresso and make small, repeatable adjustments.
Warm up and make your preparation repeatable
Follow the operating instructions for your particular machine for warm-up and routine care. There is no single warm-up duration established here for every Lelit model. Once the machine is ready, keep your preparation routine consistent between shots: use the same basket, dose, distribution and tamping approach, and start timing the same way each time. Consistency helps you tell whether a grind adjustment changed the extraction.

- MANUAL HAND-TEXTURED MICROFOAM: The powerful steam wand on this cappuccino maker and latte machine is designed to quickly turn milk into smooth, flavorful microfoam for creating latte art at home
- PRECISE DOSE GRINDING: Integrated precision conical burr grinder on bean-to-cup espresso machine grinds on demand to deliver correct amount of freshly ground coffee directly into portafilter for your preferred taste with any roast of bean
- WATER PRESSURE: Low pressure pre-infusion gradually increases pressure at the start and draws out all the flavors evenly during the extraction for a balanced-tasting espresso, latte or cappuccino

- PRECISE ESPRESSO EXTRACTION: Digital temperature regulation (PID) delivers water at precisely the right temperature, so espresso coffee maker allows for precise espresso extraction
Choose a dose that fits the basket
Weigh the coffee rather than relying on the basket looking full. Start within the capacity specified for the basket you are using; for the Anna PL41TEM’s included double basket, Lelit lists 14–18 g. If your basket is a different model or size, consult its documentation instead of assuming it takes the same dose.
Set a starting yield and measure the shot
A brew ratio of 1:2 by weight is a practical example starting point, not a rule for every coffee or basket. For instance, 18 g of dry coffee at that ratio yields 36 g of espresso. Put a scale under the cup, tare it, and stop the shot when it reaches your chosen output. A scale with a timer makes it easier to log both measurements; if your machine does not show extraction time, time each shot consistently with a separate timer.

The Specialty Coffee Association’s article “Defining the Ever-Changing Espresso” reports the results of a March 2017 Barista Guild of America survey of 275 respondents, just over three-quarters of whom were in the United States. Respondents reported average shot characteristics of an 18–20 g dose, 36.5 g output, 25–30 seconds extraction, 9 bars, and 200°F. These are survey figures, not a compulsory recipe or a calibration specification for Lelit machines. The SCA article itself notes that “Espresso is an ever-changing extraction medium, and frequent changes in the landscape of specialty coffee profoundly affect how baristas extract espresso and how it is understood.”
Adjust grind size one step at a time
- Pull a reference shot. Use your chosen dose and output, keeping preparation consistent. Record the time and taste the espresso.
- Compare the flow with your chosen reference. If the shot reaches the target output markedly faster than you expect, try a finer grind. If it takes markedly longer, try a coarser grind. This is practical troubleshooting guidance, not a universal Lelit calibration rule.
- Change only the grind. Keep dose, target output, basket, and preparation routine steady so you can attribute a difference to the adjustment.
- Pull and record another shot. Make small grinder changes, then note the new time and taste. Grinder settings are specific to the grinder, coffee, and setup, so no single setting applies to all Lelit machines.
If your Lelit has an extraction timer, use it to compare shots. On the Victoria PL91T, Lelit lists an ascending extraction timer on the display. Other models may have different controls, so consult their own instructions.

- PID Temperature Control - View and adjust your steam boiler temperature quickly with the front-mounted PID screen.
- Shot Timer - When brewing, the PID screen doubles as a shot timer to monitor your espresso progress.
- Low Power Eco Mode - A new low-power eco-mode lowers your boiler temperature to save energy costs while still offering faster recovery to brew temps.
- Programmable Preinfusion - Program up to 10 seconds of passive preinfusion for better shot consistency.
- Stainless Steel - A stainless steel case, frame, and boiler offers years of service for your kitchen.
Taste, make a controlled change, and keep notes
Time is a useful diagnostic reference; it is not the final measure of a good shot. Taste each attempt. If the flavor is not balanced for you, make one controlled adjustment—such as grind size or the chosen yield—then reassess rather than changing several variables at once. Coffee, grinder, basket, and personal preference all affect the result, so a recipe that works for one setup may not suit another.

How historical espresso definitions differ from a practical starting recipe
The SCA article also reproduces a historical espresso definition describing a 25–35 ml beverage made with 7–9 g of coffee (14–18 g for a double), water at 195°–205°F (90.5°–96.1°C), pressure of 9–10 atmospheres, and a 20–30 second brew time. It is useful as historical context, not as a current universal standard or a requirement for every Lelit setup. For repeatable dialing-in, weigh the dose and output you actually use rather than trying to force every shot to match a volume-based definition.
