Start with your machine’s default espresso settings, then adjust one control at a time. If the espresso rushes out watery with little crema, try a slightly finer grind; if it barely drips, try coarser. Those are starting clues, not universal rules: follow your model’s manual for how and when to move the grinder, then brew two or three drinks before judging the change.
What “dialing in” means on an automatic machine
On a bean-to-cup machine, dialing in means making small changes to suit a particular coffee and your taste. The grinder setting can affect how quickly coffee flows, but it is only one control. Aroma or strength settings and programmed drink volume can also change how strong the cup tastes. There is no single grinder number, espresso volume, or extraction time that applies to every machine.

Begin with one type of whole bean coffee and the machine’s standard espresso recipe. If you change several settings together, it becomes difficult to tell which change helped.
Read the cup before changing a setting
Fast, watery flow
If coffee runs quickly and tastes weak or watery, a finer grind may help. De’Longhi gives this as guidance for the Magnifica Evo Next: move its adjustment dial one click toward the finer setting, toward position “1.” That direction and numbering are specific to that model; do not assume another machine uses the same labels or direction. De’Longhi’s Magnifica Evo Next grinder settings FAQ explains its procedure.

Very slow flow or dripping
If coffee comes out extremely slowly or only drips, try a coarser setting, following the instructions for your model. A grind that is too fine can impede flow, but the appearance of the stream alone does not establish whether the espresso tastes right.
Taste and crema
For the Magnifica Evo Next, De’Longhi describes a good result as a slow, honey-like flow, nut-brown crema, and a balanced, lingering taste. Treat these as qualitative cues for that machine—not a measurable recipe or proof that every drink is ideal. Taste matters, and crema color by itself cannot determine whether you will enjoy the cup.

Adjust the grinder safely
- Find your model’s instructions. Check the manual or manufacturer support page for the grinder adjustment procedure. The control’s direction, markings, and operating requirements differ by machine.
- Change one small step. Do not force a dial that will not move. Philips says that on the machines covered by its support guidance, the grinder can only be adjusted while the beans are being ground, and advises changing no more than one notch at a time. Some models use a supplied key. De’Longhi gives similar one-click advice for the cited Magnifica Evo Next. Follow your own model’s instructions rather than applying either manufacturer’s procedure universally. Philips’ grinder-adjustment guidance describes its covered machines.
- Make a trial drink using the usual recipe. Keep other controls unchanged so the effect of the grind adjustment is easier to assess.
- Allow for the change to take effect. Philips recommends brewing two to three drinks before assessing the difference; De’Longhi says its new setting is fully effective after at least two espressos. Taste after that interval rather than judging only the first cup.
- Repeat only if needed. If the flow and taste still point in the same direction, make one further small adjustment and evaluate again.
Separate grinder changes from strength and volume
If the flow is reasonable but the drink tastes too weak, check whether your machine has a separate aroma or strength control and a programmed cup-volume setting. Increasing strength and reducing drink volume are different interventions from changing grind size. Philips’ setup guidance describes aroma-strength and quantity controls, and its watery-coffee troubleshooting identifies cup volume, aroma setting, and grinder setting as factors that can affect perceived strength. Philips’ espresso machine setup guide and Philips’ watery-coffee troubleshooting cover those controls for its machines.
Try changing just one of these settings after you have assessed the grinder, where your model supports it. A longer programmed drink can taste weaker because more water passes through the coffee; changing the aroma setting may alter strength without changing that programmed volume. The exact effect and available controls depend on the machine.

Retune when you change beans
Different bean types, blends, and roast levels may need different grinder settings. When you open a new coffee, taste a shot using your existing recipe before deciding whether to adjust. If the flow or flavor has shifted, repeat the one-step process. A particular roast or brand is not a guaranteed fix for every weak or slow espresso.

- The grinder dial feels stuck: Check whether your machine requires adjustment while grinding or needs a supplied tool. Do not force the dial or turn it contrary to the manual; Philips documents an operating-while-grinding requirement for the models covered by its support page.
- The first cup after an adjustment seems unchanged: Brew the recommended two or three drinks before assessing the setting, as the grinder change may take several drinks to show fully.
- The flow looks fine but the cup is weak: Check the separate strength and programmed-volume controls before making another grinder change.
- The result changed after replacing the beans: Reassess the setting because bean type and roast can affect the result.
- The machine needs cleaning: Use the cleaning and descaling instructions for your exact model. Philips’ documentation for the EP3246/70R1 describes regular cleaning of its removable brew group; that maintenance guidance should not be assumed to apply to other machines. Consult your manual before choosing a cleaner or descaler, or setting a cleaning schedule. Philips EP3246/70R1 documentation is specific to that model.
