Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo diagnose a Windows crash, note the blue-screen stop code and time, compare nearby System log events across incidents, confirm Windows is configured to save a memory dump, then inspect the dump in WinDbg. Treat a driver name or a nearby event as a lead—not proof of the cause.
What Windows crash logs and dumps can tell you
A Windows bug check—also called a system crash, kernel error, or stop-code error—is a protective stop intended to prevent continued operation from compromising system safety or data. Windows logs record events around the incident; a memory dump captures information about system state. Used together, they can narrow the investigation, but neither automatically identifies the root cause. Microsoft notes that finding the cause may not be easy. Microsoft’s stop-code troubleshooting guidance covers supported Windows Client versions.

Build a timeline in Event Viewer
-
Record the stop code and the crash timestamp from the blue-screen message, if available, or from the System log.

Open Event Viewer and inspect the Windows System log around that time. Look for events immediately before the crash, including service starts or stops, driver messages, and changes associated with updates or recently added software or devices.

Compare more than one incident. Check whether the same service behavior or event sequence appears before each crash, and note changes made shortly before the problem began.
Timing alone does not establish causation. An event recorded just before a bug check may be unrelated; a pattern that recurs across crashes is a stronger lead to investigate.

Confirm Windows is configured to save a dump
Use Taskbar search to open Advanced system settings. Under Startup and Recovery, check that Write an event to the System log is selected and review the Write debugging information setting. Microsoft recommends Automatic memory dump in its stop-code workflow. After changing a setting, restart Windows. Labels and available options can differ by Windows version; Microsoft’s separate dump-configuration instructions apply to Windows 10. See Microsoft’s system failure and recovery configuration guidance.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

| Dump type | Usual location | What it provides |
|---|---|---|
| Small memory dump | %SystemRoot%Minidump |
Limited crash information; Microsoft’s stop-code guidance describes a small dump as 256 KB. |
| Kernel, complete, automatic, or active memory dump | %SystemRoot%MEMORY.DMP |
More information than a small dump. Kernel dumps contain kernel memory; automatic dumps contain the same information as kernel dumps while Windows manages page-file sizing. |
Dump capture depends on the dump type and page-file configuration. Small dumps use less storage but may omit relevant information; larger dumps can provide more diagnostic detail. A missing dump does not, by itself, show why the crash happened. Microsoft explains the varieties of kernel-mode dump files.

Open and inspect the dump in WinDbg
Install or open WinDbg, then choose File > Open crash dump and select the dump file. For an internet-connected system, Microsoft’s stop-code guidance recommends using the public symbol server so the debugger can resolve system symbols. Microsoft documents this command-line form:
windbg -y <SymbolPath> -i <ImagePath> -z <DumpFileName>
After the dump loads, run:
!analyze -v
Review the bug-check analysis and the STACK_TEXT output together. If useful, inspect loaded module information with lm N T. Microsoft’s WinDbg kernel-mode dump analysis guide describes this workflow; its !analyze reference explains the command.

A driver named in the analysis or stack is a clue, not an automatic verdict. Compare it with the event timeline, repeated incidents, and circumstances that reliably precede the crash. Hardware problems can produce erratic symptoms, and a dump may not make the root cause clear. Avoid removing or replacing a driver solely because its name appears in one analysis.
Check whether a dump is readable
If WinDbg cannot open a file, or you want a quick integrity check, Microsoft’s DumpChk can summarize a dump and flag files that appear corrupt or cannot be opened by a debugger. A successful check suggests the file may be readable; it does not prove that the dump contains enough information to determine the cause, and subtle corruption can remain. See Microsoft’s DumpChk documentation.

When the first pass does not identify the cause
-
Check whether Windows is actually creating dumps in the expected location after a crash and whether the chosen dump type has appropriate page-file support.
-
Compare the stop code, timestamp, recurring log events, and WinDbg findings across multiple incidents rather than relying on one file or one event.
-
Use recent software, driver, device, or update changes as investigation leads, then look for evidence that links them consistently to the crashes.
