Before booking a repair, check whether the iPhone receiver opening is obstructed and compare a normal call with speakerphone. Crackling or static can also be related to network reception, so retrying under different conditions can help narrow down what to report. These checks point to possible causes; they cannot confirm whether the receiver has failed.
Start with the receiver opening
- Remove anything that could cover it. Take off the case and screen protector, then check that the receiver opening is not blocked or dirty. Apple recommends these checks for sound-quality problems: Apple’s iPhone sound troubleshooting guidance.
- Clean only the surface if needed. If you can see dirt at the opening, Apple’s guidance is to use a small, clean, dry, soft-bristled brush. Brush gently across the opening; do not insert a tool into the grille or use liquid. If debris appears packed inside and surface cleaning is not enough, stop and arrange an inspection rather than probing the receiver.
- Make a comparison call. Test a normal call at the receiver, then try speakerphone. Note whether the crackling occurs only at the receiver or on both routes. This is a troubleshooting clue, not proof that either the receiver or another part is working correctly.
A small soft-bristled electronics cleaning brush is optional; use it only for gentle surface cleaning. Apple’s stated method is: “If necessary, clean the speaker or receiver opening with a small, soft-bristled brush. Make sure the brush is clean and dry.”

Check whether the sound changes with the call conditions
Apple notes that crackling or static can be related to network or reception. If the noise is intermittent, call again later or from a different location and note whether it changes. A symptom that varies with location or time is useful to report, but it does not rule out a device problem.

Apple says repairs through Apple and Apple Authorized Service Providers use genuine Apple parts and are covered by Apple’s Limited Warranty and AppleCare plans. Repairs by non-authorized providers are not covered by those plans, and damage caused by a non-authorized provider is not covered, subject to applicable law. Apple has a service program for certain iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro devices that have no sound from the receiver during calls. It is not a general program for every crackling complaint. Apple’s page says the program covered certain devices manufactured between October 2020 and April 2021, excludes iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max, and requires examination. The stated coverage period is three years after the device’s first retail sale; Apple’s program information was current as of August 19, 2022. Check directly with Apple to see whether a specific phone qualifies: iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro service program for no sound issues.
