If the issue disappears at stock and returns after a controlled tuning change, the overclock is a strong suspect. Symptoms alone do not prove it: overheating, faulty hardware, drivers, and operating-system problems can cause similar failures.
What GPU instability can look like
Common warning signs include crashes, hangs, random reboots, display-driver timeouts (TDRs), blue screens, WHEA hardware errors, or visible corruption such as flickering or distorted textures. AMD lists these among possible stability symptoms, while also noting that overheating, hardware faults, and driver or operating-system issues can produce them too (AMD stability troubleshooting).
Record what changed before the first failure: core clock, memory clock, voltage, power limit, or a saved tuning profile. Also note the game or application, what was happening when it failed, whether the display recovered, and any error message. This history helps distinguish a repeatable tuning problem from a one-off crash.
Confirm whether the overclock is responsible
- Reset GPU tuning to stock. Use the reset control in the tuning software. In MSI Afterburner, MSI’s guidance is to use the Reset control to return settings to defaults (MSI Afterburner overclocking guidance). Temporarily close other overclocking utilities if they might also be applying settings. AMD recommends putting system components at factory defaults while investigating instability (AMD stability troubleshooting).
- Repeat the exact workload that failed. Use the same game or application, with the same settings and a similar session. If it now runs normally, that supports the overclock as the cause. If it still fails at stock, investigate other system causes before changing GPU clocks again (AMD stability troubleshooting; AMD troubleshooting when a system is unstable at defaults).
- Reapply tuning one setting at a time. Make small adjustments, record each one, and test after every change. AMD advises small increments and returning to the last stable setting if crashes, hangs, or graphical corruption appear (AMD manual tuning guidance). There is no universal safe MHz increment: GPU silicon, board design, cooling, and available controls differ.
The clearest evidence is repeatable: the failure occurs with a tuned profile, stops at stock, and returns after a controlled change. If a glitch, hang, or driver timeout appears, roll back to the last stable setting rather than increasing clocks further.

Choose tests that match how you use the GPU
A stress test or benchmark is useful for provoking some failures, but it exercises only particular workloads and operating conditions. Follow it with the games and applications that matter to you; a short pass cannot establish stability across every title or state. The vendor suggestions below are examples, not a universal pass threshold.
| Test | What it can tell you | Limits to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| AMD Adrenalin Stress Test | Checks the current GPU tuning in supported Radeon software. AMD says its default duration is 60 seconds. | A crash or reboot resets tuning to defaults. Completing the short test does not guarantee stability in other workloads. Behavior and availability are software-specific (AMD Adrenalin Stress Test guidance). |
| Benchmark followed by a familiar game | Combines a repeatable benchmark with a real workload you recognize. MSI describes a 10-minute benchmark followed by testing a familiar game. | This is MSI’s suggested sequence, not a general stability guarantee for every GPU or game (MSI Afterburner overclocking guidance). |
| Your normal games and applications | Tests the workloads where you actually need the GPU to be reliable. AMD recommends running normal 3D games and applications for a few hours after a manual adjustment. | Different applications stress different GPU behavior, so a successful session does not cover every workload (AMD manual tuning guidance). |
| NVIDIA DCGM diagnostics | For supported NVIDIA systems, diagnostics can check areas including memory, compute, PCIe, power, and thermals. | Support varies by GPU and software release; these datacenter-oriented diagnostics are not required for routine consumer troubleshooting. Failures may reflect host software, topology, cooling, power, or workload interference, not only the GPU. DCGM does not repair faults, replace NVIDIA offline field diagnostics, or determine RMA eligibility (NVIDIA DCGM Diagnostics). |
Use stress tests without putting the GPU at risk
Do not treat the most extreme power test as the best stability test. NVIDIA says FurMark draws power well beyond a real game and may trigger temperature or current protection mechanisms. NVIDIA warns that disabling those protections to force a test can permanently damage the graphics card and void the manufacturer’s warranty (NVIDIA guidance on FurMark and GPU protections). Leave protection mechanisms enabled and stop a test if the system shows instability.

- All-aluminum metal material - Provides strong and long-lasting support. This is made of all-aluminum metal instead of plastic, can avoid the aging of plastic materials and can be used as a long-term replacement.
- Screw adjustment design - The graphics card bracket design can be compatible with various chassis configurations of traditional and long power supply bays to meet various user hosts.
- Bottom hidden mag.net design - The mag.net hidden in the base is designed for easy installation and more stable standing in the chassis.
- The workmanship of the detail process - The small graphics card support frame is made of three complex processes: polished anode, sandblasted anode and CNC high-speed edge-washing high-gloss process. The full anode process can maintain the durability.
- Tool-free fixing module - The support module is equipped with a cushioning anti-scratch pad and a base high-gloss process.
If the problem persists at stock settings
A failure that remains after GPU tuning is reset is a reason to broaden the investigation, not to assume the graphics card is defective. Check the basics before returning to overclocking:
- Confirm the graphics card is seated properly and its PCIe power connections are secure.
- Check that the power supply is suitable for the system and that the GPU is not overheating.
- Review driver release notes and, if needed, see whether a clean driver installation changes the behavior.
- Check system memory and other hardware if instability continues at factory defaults.
AMD recommends checking other components when instability persists at defaults (AMD troubleshooting when a system is unstable at defaults). NVIDIA DCGM documentation also describes how a diagnostic failure can involve host software, system topology, cooling, power, or workload interference—not just the GPU (NVIDIA DCGM Diagnostics). The appropriate checks and available tuning controls depend on the hardware, driver, and software environment.
