Why is Resident Evil running slowly on my PC?
Low frame rates, stuttering, crashes, launch failures and display problems can have different causes. Begin by noting the exact game and edition, storefront, Windows version, CPU, GPU, memory, resolution, graphics settings and what the problem looks like. These figures are Steam-published estimates, not independently measured benchmarks. Check the live listing for the exact game and revisit it after major updates, since requirements and performance can change.
2. Lower demanding settings before changing hardware
If your PC falls short of the recommended tier or struggles at your chosen resolution, try reducing resolution, texture quality and shadow quality. For Resident Evil 2, Steam specifically recommends reducing texture or shadow quality or resolution when graphics memory is insufficient. Change one or two settings at a time and compare the same scene so you can tell which adjustment helps.

3. Check which GPU the game is using
On a laptop with integrated and dedicated graphics, confirm the game is assigned to the high-performance GPU. The available controls depend on the laptop and game; use the directions in the matching Capcom guide rather than assuming every system exposes the same setting. A game inadvertently running on integrated graphics can explain unexpectedly poor performance even when the laptop also has a dedicated GPU.
4. Close resource-heavy background applications
Temporarily close recording software, performance overlays and other demanding apps while diagnosing. Capcom warns that applications consuming system resources can compromise performance and stability. This is a test, not proof that a background app is the cause; reopen tools one at a time if you need to identify a conflict.

What should I try if the game won’t launch or keeps crashing?
- Restart the PC and update Windows and graphics drivers. Retest the game before changing several things at once, so you can identify whether the update or restart affected the symptom.
- Verify the Steam installation. In Steam, open the game’s Properties and use the installed-files option to verify integrity. Capcom’s RE4 (2023) guide describes verification to find missing or damaged files; follow the current Steam UI labels for your installation.
- Check the game-specific Capcom guide. It may include title-specific steps for display issues, security software exclusions or configuration problems. Do not disable security protections broadly. Only consider a narrowly scoped exclusion for trusted game files when the official guidance and your security software support it.
- Capture details for a repeatable crash. Record the location, action and steps that reproduce it. If the relevant game guide identifies a CrashReport folder, include its contents when contacting support, where available.
Can a shader cache or configuration file cause trouble?
Capcom’s general Steam troubleshooting guide identifies game-generated shader.cache and shader.cache2 files as possible items to delete when investigating damaged shader-cache data. Treat this as a troubleshooting option, not a guaranteed stutter fix. Follow the guide for the relevant game, and back up configuration files before changing or removing them. The game may need time to rebuild shader data afterward.
For Resident Evil 4 (2023), Capcom also describes restoring the default configuration when frame rates are unstable. Use that title’s directions rather than applying configuration changes from another release.

Does the original Resident Evil 4 PC fix apply to the remake?
No. Capcom’s guide for the original PC release says it is hard-coded to run at 30 or 60 frames per second and notes that 60 Hz display compatibility may be relevant. That information applies to the older release; it does not describe Resident Evil 4 (2023). Don’t use an old-game workaround as a general fix for newer Resident Evil titles.
Should I upgrade my graphics card?
Consider an upgrade only after checking which component is below the requirements for your exact game and deciding what resolution, frame rate and settings you want. Compare your current GPU and graphics memory with the game’s minimum and recommended tiers, and account for texture and shadow quality, demanding scenes and whether you want ray tracing. Steam’s target figures are estimates, so a listed minimum does not promise steady performance in every scene. The requirements cited here do not establish one universally suitable upgrade or a guaranteed performance gain.
