Claude Code gives you useful ways to inspect session usage and what is loaded into context, but no single screen identifies every cause of a usage spike. Start by checking whether you are using a Claude subscription or an API key, then compare the relevant usage view with the right billing report.
First, identify how your Claude Code session is metered
The account path determines whether to investigate plan allowance or API charges. Anthropic describes subscription usage as included plan usage subject to limits, while API-key usage is pay-as-you-go. If you use more than one route, confirm which account and session you are looking at before comparing figures. See Anthropic’s explanation of Claude Code usage and limits.

Use the command that answers the question
/usageshows session and plan usage information, including plan limits and rate-limit status./contextvisualizes what is currently loaded into the context window and where it is being used./costshows token use and spend for the current session when using an API key. The Claude Help Center describes it as showing “your running spend for the current session.”
These views have different scopes: context is a snapshot of loaded material, while usage and cost report usage information. The command names and displayed details can change; if your installed version differs, check the current Claude Code CLI reference.

A total token count is not a dollar total. Anthropic separates input, output, cache-write, and cache-read tokens, and the applicable price varies by model and category. Check the current Anthropic API pricing table for the model and token types in your report; do not assume the largest token bucket accounts for the largest share of cost.

Check whether repeated context is being cached
Long context can mean more input is sent across requests. Prompt caching can reduce the price of repeated input when it applies: Anthropic’s guidance says the first request pays full input pricing, while later requests within roughly five minutes can use the lower cache-read rate. Treat that interval as documented guidance, not a guarantee for every model, account, or request. Details are in the Help Center’s CLAUDE.md and prompt-caching article.
Use /context to see what is loaded now, but do not treat it as a billing statement or a complete diagnosis of cache behavior. A large context may be relevant to repeated input, yet that view alone does not establish how much was billed or why a particular request was expensive.

Reconcile API session estimates with account billing
For API-key use, Claude Code’s session dollar figure is calculated locally and is an estimate. Check Claude Console’s Usage page for Anthropic API billing. For requests routed through Amazon Bedrock, Vertex AI, or another supported provider, check that provider’s billing and usage reporting instead. Anthropic explains Console reporting in its API Console usage and costs guide.

If older conversation history is no longer needed, /clear starts fresh; /compact summarizes history so you can continue with less context. Record the current usage view first, make one change, and compare the next session or requests under similar conditions. Neither command guarantees a particular token or cost saving; the result depends on what your workflow sends and how it is metered.
