Check which OBS counter is rising: encoding lag or rendering lag points to local PC/GPU workload; network dropped frames point to an unstable connection to the streaming server or a bitrate your connection cannot sustain. A viewer reporting buffering alone does not identify either problem. Start with OBS’s Stats view and session log, then test one likely cause at a time.
What the OBS symptoms mean
Encoding lag: the encoding workload is too high
Encoding lag means OBS is not keeping up with the configured encoding work. Look at local capacity and output settings, then reduce the workload if needed. OBS notes that frame rate affects encoding performance. OBS Project’s encoding performance guide covers common local performance constraints.

Rendering lag: OBS cannot prepare frames in time
Rendering lag is related, but distinct: OBS cannot render and composite frames quickly enough. Scene compositing uses GPU resources, and a heavily loaded GPU can leave too little capacity for OBS. Do not call every rendering-lag event encoder overload; both symptoms can reflect local performance limits, but they are not the same counter.
Network dropped frames: the connection to the server is unstable
OBS describes dropped frames as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or unable to sustain the set bitrate. Investigate stable upload capacity, the connection itself, and the route to the ingest server. If enough frames are dropped, the stream may disconnect. See OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide.

Viewer buffering is not proof of broadcaster-side drops
Playback can buffer for viewers even when OBS is not reporting network drops. Viewer location, network, device, and platform playback conditions can all matter. Check OBS’s counters before changing broadcaster settings in response to a viewer complaint. OBS Project’s buffering guide discusses viewer-side factors.
Diagnose the problem while streaming
- Open OBS Stats and note the counters. In OBS, open View > Stats and watch whether encoding lag, rendering lag, or network dropped frames rises. The exact labels can vary by OBS version. Also note the main-window dropped-frame counter if shown.
- Save the session log. Keep the log from the affected stream so you can review the session rather than relying on a viewer’s description alone.
- Record a baseline before changing anything. Note which counter is increasing and when. Make one change, then compare the counters again; changing several settings at once makes it harder to identify the cause.
- Follow the counter that is rising. For network drops, test connection and bitrate variables. For encoding or rendering lag, reduce local workload. If the counters stay healthy while viewers buffer, investigate their playback conditions separately.
If network dropped frames are increasing
Check whether bitrate exceeds stable upload capacity
Lower OBS’s video bitrate and see whether the network dropped-frame counter improves. OBS suggests starting around 75% of total upload speed as a troubleshooting heuristic, not as a universal YouTube recommendation or a guarantee: the important factor is stable upload capacity, not just a speed-test peak. A lower bitrate can reduce picture quality. The available official-source material does not establish current YouTube bitrate ceilings, so do not treat this heuristic as a YouTube limit.

Isolate the network path
- Try Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable. A cable is a useful test, not proof that the ISP, router, or ingest server is healthy.
- Check VPNs, security software, and network-prioritization utilities. Temporarily isolate whether one of these is interfering with the connection, then restore protections and settings as appropriate.
- Check network drivers and hardware. Investigate rather than replacing equipment at random. If you are unsure whether a component is faulty, OBS advises contacting your ISP.
- Try another streaming server where available. If the issue changes, that can help isolate the route to the ingest server.
- Test another service if practical. A problem on only one destination may point to a service-specific route or connection issue; drops across services suggest looking more broadly at the local network or upload connection.
OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide includes these network checks. Change one factor at a time so the counter tells you whether the test helped.

If encoding or rendering lag is increasing
Reduce GPU competition
- Close other GPU-heavy applications while streaming.
- If a game is running, cap its frame rate or enable V-Sync so it does not consume all available GPU capacity.
- Reduce demanding game graphics settings if the game is competing with OBS.
Simplify the OBS workload
- Review complex scenes, expensive sources, browser sources, and filters; disable or simplify items you do not need.
- If local performance remains insufficient, reduce output resolution or frame rate. OBS notes that 30 fps is an option when 60 fps is not stable, and that frame rate affects rendering as well as encoding.
These changes can affect output quality, smoothness, or the production design. Use the relevant counter after each adjustment to check whether local performance improved. See OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide.

Choose an encoder for the hardware you have
Modern hardware encoders can shift work from the CPU to a specialized component of the GPU with relatively low performance impact. Results depend on the hardware and encoder generation; older hardware may trade image quality for lower load. Switching to a hardware encoder may help a local encoding bottleneck, but it does not fix network dropped frames. OBS explains the trade-offs in its hardware encoding guide.
When OBS looks healthy but viewers still buffer
If OBS’s dropped-frame counter is not rising and rendering or encoding lag is not increasing, do not lower bitrate or resolution automatically just because some viewers report buffering. Ask whether the issue affects particular locations, connections, or devices, and compare reports across viewers. Playback conditions and platform transcoding can affect what viewers see independently of OBS’s counters; the broadcaster’s healthy counters do not guarantee every viewer has a smooth connection.

Choose fixes by what they change
| Observed symptom | First area to test | Potential trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Encoding lag rising | Local encoding workload, encoder choice, output settings | Changing resolution, frame rate, or encoder can affect quality or smoothness |
| Rendering lag rising | GPU load, game settings, scenes, sources, and filters | Simpler scenes or lower game/output settings can change production or picture quality |
| Network dropped frames rising | Stable upload, bitrate, Wi-Fi versus wired, and route to ingest | Lower bitrate may reduce picture quality |
| OBS counters healthy; viewers buffer | Viewer location, connection, device, and playback conditions | Broadcaster-side quality reductions may not address the viewer’s cause |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube 24/7, rather than diagnose an OBS camera or desktop stream, StreamNeo runs that playback from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded video playback to YouTube, not a fix for OBS counters or a camera-based live stream. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
