Start with the outlet, charger, cable and device connector; then allow a drained battery time to charge, look for signs that the device is active despite a blank screen, and try only the manufacturer’s reset procedure for the exact model. A single symptom cannot tell you which part has failed. Stop if you see swelling, corrosion or damage, or if the device remains unresponsive after these safe checks.
1. Check the outlet, charger, cable and connection
Begin outside the device. Plug into an outlet you know works, and make sure the adapter is intended for your device. Check that each cable end and the device connector is seated firmly. Look for damage, fraying, corrosion or looseness on the adapter, cable and port. Do not force a connector or probe a port with a metal object.

If possible, test the adapter and cable with another device that is confirmed compatible, or try a known-working compatible set. Do not assume a generic charger will work: the connector, power requirements and charging support depend on the exact model. Consult its manual before replacing an accessory or changing chargers. Google recommends checking the charger and cable and trying compatible alternatives; ASUS advises using the original adapter and cable for the relevant devices.

- ACCURATE CIRCUIT BREAKER IDENTIFICATION: Quickly locate the correct breaker with precision using our circuit breaker finder, ensuring efficient electrical troubleshooting
- TWO-PART SYSTEM: Consists of a Transmitter connected to the outlet/fixture and a Receiver to scan the panel, allowing for easy and accurate breaker identification
- CLEAR INDICATIONS: The Receiver provides visual and audible cues when the correct breaker is found, ensuring a hassle-free locating process
- WIDE COMPATIBILITY: Operates on 90-120V AC circuits, making it suitable for a variety of electrical systems and installations
- BUILT-IN GFCI TESTER: The Transmitter includes a GFCI outlet tester, enabling you to inspect wiring conditions and test GFCI devices for added safety
2. Give a deeply discharged battery time
Once you have connected verified working, compatible power, leave the device connected before repeatedly pressing its power button. A battery that is fully depleted may need time before an indicator appears or the device can start.
The timing is model-specific. For the particular case of an Android phone with a red light indicating a fully discharged battery, Google advises charging for at least 30 minutes before restarting. That is not a universal wait time for phones, laptops or other electronics; follow the exact model’s instructions. - ACCURATE CIRCUIT BREAKER IDENTIFICATION: Quickly locate the correct breaker with precision using the transmitter and receiver of the circuit breaker finder, ensuring efficient electrical troubleshooting
- CLEAR INDICATIONS: The Receiver provides visual and audible cues when the correct breaker is found, ensuring a hassle-free locating process on 90-120V AC circuits
- BUILT-IN GFCI TESTER: The Transmitter includes a GFCI outlet tester, enabling you to inspect wiring conditions and test GFCI devices for added safety
- LIGHT SOCKET AND GROUNDING ADAPTERS: Easily find the correct circuit for a lighting fixture with the light socket adapter, and use the included 3-prong to 2-prong grounding adapter for added convenience
- ALLIGATOR CLIP ADAPTER: Enables testing on bare wires, providing versatile usage options
3. Check whether the device is on but the screen is blank
Look for any response appropriate to the device: a charging icon, status light, sound, vibration or keyboard light. Indicator meanings vary by model. A missing battery icon or red light does not, by itself, prove that a phone has no power; Google notes that a screen problem may be responsible in that situation.

- NON-CONTACT DETECTION of AC voltage in cables, cords, circuit breakers, lighting fixtures, switches, non-tamper-resistant outlets, and wires
- CLEAR INDICATION: Bright LED illuminates green to indicate tester is operational and flashes red and emits a beeping alert when voltage is detected
- BROAD APPLICATION with a 50 to 1000V AC power detection range
- CONSERVE BATTERIES with auto power-off function
- LIGHTWEIGHT AND DURABLE compact design with a convenient clip fits securely in pocket; 6.6-Foot (2 m) drop protection
4. Use the exact model’s restart or reset instructions
A temporary power-state or software problem can sometimes prevent startup even when charging is indicated. Button combinations and hard-reset procedures differ across manufacturers and models, so do not try a sequence found for a different device.
Find the restart, forced-restart or power-reset instructions in the manufacturer’s support page or manual for your exact model, and follow them as written. For example, Google’s Android instructions describe holding the power button for 5–7 seconds in their specified guidance; LG and ASUS document different, model-dependent procedures for laptops and handheld devices. These are examples, not interchangeable steps. Google Android Help · LG notebook support · ASUS support

What the symptoms can—and cannot—tell you
Several different faults can produce the same apparent symptom. Use the clues below to choose a safe next step, not to identify a failed part with certainty.
Recommended Free Tools
| Possible cause | Clues | Next safe step |
|---|---|---|
| Outlet, adapter, cable or connection problem | No charging indicator; loose or damaged plug, cable or port; another compatible device also fails with the adapter. | Check a known-working outlet and seated connections; test only with equipment confirmed compatible with the exact device. |
| Deeply discharged or failed battery | The device has been depleted or unused; an indicator appears only after a delay; a laptop runs on AC power but not on battery. | Allow the model-appropriate charging time and follow that manufacturer’s battery guidance. |
| Power is present but the display is blank | Sound, vibration, status light or another response occurs without visible screen output. | Use the model’s display troubleshooting and seek service if needed. |
| Temporary power-state or software problem | Charging is indicated but startup does not complete. | Follow the restart or reset instructions for the exact model. |
| Physical or internal fault | Swelling, corrosion, visible damage, or continued failure after external power checks. | Stop ordinary troubleshooting and contact the manufacturer or a qualified technician. |
5. Stop troubleshooting if there is damage or no response
Do not continue charging tests if the battery is swollen or deformed, the adapter or cable is visibly damaged, the port appears damaged, or corrosion is present. Verizon identifies swelling and port corrosion as damage checks; HP gives separate safety guidance for swollen or deformed notebook batteries. Follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions and arrange professional help rather than trying to open or repair the device yourself.
