A zero score does not, by itself, show that a model learned nothing. It may mean the evaluator read the wrong columns, paired predictions with the wrong examples, rejected output values, or applied a metric or threshold you did not expect. Trace the benchmark’s grading path from its versioned contract to individual rows before changing the model or rewriting the CSV.
Start with the benchmark’s scoring contract
Record the benchmark name and release or commit, task, scoring command, configuration, and metric. Then check the official task specification or evaluator code for the required filename, columns, row ordering or ID key, label format, normalization, and handling of missing or invalid rows. A CSV format that works for one benchmark may be invalid for another.

For example, the AutoML Benchmark results documentation specifies a prediction CSV with a header and predictions and truth columns, plus class-probability columns for classification. The DataSpace evaluation README describes frozen task configurations and identifies the benchmark release as authoritative for gold files and task configurations. Treat these as examples of contract-specific requirements, not universal rules for benchmark CSVs.

A file can be syntactically valid and still produce the wrong data. Compare several raw lines with the parsed dataframe or records. Check the delimiter, header, quoting and escaping, encoding, blank lines, missing-value markers, malformed-line handling, column names, inferred types, and total row count.

With pandas, set parser options to match the benchmark contract instead of relying on automatic detection. In particular, sep=None uses Python’s CSV sniffer on the first valid row, while regular-expression separators can mishandle quoted fields. See the pandas.read_csv documentation for the available parsing options and their behavior.
Verify predictions are matched to the right examples
Compare the prediction count with the expected test-set size. Look for duplicate or missing IDs and confirm the evaluator’s required join key or row order. Check that an index column has not shifted fields, a header has not been counted as a prediction, and extra rows have not slipped into the file.
A prediction can be reasonable and still be marked wrong if it is compared with another example’s gold label. The AutoML and DataSpace specifications illustrate why the expected columns and matching rules must come from the particular evaluator, rather than assumptions about CSVs in general.

Compare labels and data types exactly
Inspect the unique values in both prediction and gold columns. Compare capitalization, leading or trailing spaces, numeric versus string types, class IDs versus class names, and which class is treated as positive. Apply only a mapping the benchmark explicitly permits.
Label encodings accepted by one service are not automatically accepted by another. For instance, SageMaker’s model-evaluation documentation gives examples of supported label formats; use the target benchmark’s own contract to decide what is valid.

Reproduce the metric and aggregation
Check that you are running the intended scorer, whether higher or lower is better, the averaging mode, class order, and any normalization from the raw metric to the displayed benchmark score. Recalculate the result on a tiny sample whose predictions and gold labels you have checked by hand. The scikit-learn model-evaluation guide explains that scoring behavior depends on the selected metric and its configuration.
Also inspect warnings and per-class results. Some metrics can be undefined in edge cases; an undefined value or scorer-handling problem is not necessarily evidence that the model’s actual performance is zero.
Check thresholds and rejected predictions
Find out whether the evaluation pipeline discards predictions below a confidence threshold. If so, check the configured threshold and whether confidence values are present and on the expected scale. A threshold that is too high—or confidence values supplied in the wrong format—can leave few or no predictions to score.
This behavior is specific to some workflows, not a general property of CSV benchmarks. For example, Google Document AI’s evaluation documentation describes confidence-threshold behavior and defines precision, recall, and F1 using true-positive, false-positive, and false-negative counts.

Do not stop at the aggregate score. Find the first failed or zero-scored examples and print, for each one, the raw prediction, parsed value, gold value, and evaluator’s reason. This helps distinguish a wrong answer from an output the evaluator could not interpret.

Invalid-output policy varies by task, even within a benchmark. The MedVision v1.2.0 benchmark pipeline overview describes a task in which a prediction that fails to parse into the required numbers receives a zero; other task types in the same overview handle parse failures differently. Confirm the policy for your exact task and version.
Run a controlled smoke test
Use a tiny CSV copied from the official schema, with known-correct predictions and one deliberately wrong row. This is a debugging procedure, not a guarantee about how every evaluator behaves.
- Both the known-correct and deliberately wrong cases score zero: check the invocation, file path, schema, parser settings, and task configuration first.
- The known-correct case scores as expected, but the real file does not: compare example alignment, types, label values, and malformed records row by row.
Compare the remaining explanations with evidence
If several causes still seem plausible, work through this checklist in order:
- Did the evaluator parse every required column and row?
- Are predictions paired with the correct test examples and gold labels?
- Do labels and types conform to the task contract?
- Are the metric, aggregation, threshold, and score normalization configured as intended?
- Does the task drop invalid outputs, count them as wrong, or assign them a task-specific score?
The goal is to explain the zero with row-level evidence. Until you have traced that path, the aggregate score alone cannot tell you whether the model failed or the evaluation pipeline did.
