To detect visual changes in content that appears only after a button click, make your visual test perform the click, verify the intended state appeared, and then capture that state. With Playwright Test, a stable button locator followed by toHaveScreenshot() compares the post-click page against a reviewed baseline.
Build a visual test around the state you need to inspect
A screenshot taken before an interaction cannot catch a panel, menu, dialog, or other layout that does not yet exist. The test must reproduce the interaction and synchronize on evidence that the page reached the intended state before taking its screenshot.

Playwright Test example
Install and configure Playwright Test in your project, then adapt the URL, button name, and visible-state assertion to the application. This example assumes the button reveals text reading “Additional details.”

});The assertion before the screenshot is a synchronization point, not a requirement that your page use that exact text. Assert something that reliably indicates the target state is ready: for example, a dialog becoming visible or a panel appearing. Playwright recommends role locators for interactive controls because they reflect how users and assistive technology perceive them. If your project deliberately defines test IDs as its locator contract, use one consistently instead. See Playwright’s locator guidance.

If clicking navigates or opens a popup
Not every button expands content in the current page. If clicking navigates, wait for and test the destination, then capture that page. If it opens a new tab or popup, capture the resulting page or state rather than asserting that the original page expanded. The important rule is to assert the actual outcome of the interaction before comparing pixels.
How Playwright screenshot comparisons work
toHaveScreenshot() is an assertion from the Playwright Test runner; it is not a standalone browser-page method. For screenshot assertions, Playwright waits until two consecutive screenshots match, then compares the last capture with the expected image. This helps avoid capturing while rendering is still changing, but it does not replace an assertion that the correct interaction state appeared. See the PageAssertions reference.

Create and review the baseline
The first run creates a reference screenshot; later runs compare against it. Review and commit the reference image alongside the test. When a change produces a diff, decide whether it is a regression or an intended design change. Update the baseline only after that review, rather than accepting every newly generated image automatically. Playwright documents this workflow in its guide to visual comparisons.

Visual output can vary with the browser, operating system, hardware, rendering settings, and headless mode. Create baselines and run comparisons in the same browser project and rendering environment wherever possible, especially between local development and CI. An environment mismatch can produce pixel differences unrelated to the button’s behavior.

Reduce screenshot noise without hiding regressions
Playwright disables animations by default for screenshot assertions. The visual comparison API also offers thresholds and a stylesheet for filtering volatile content. Use those controls narrowly: increasing tolerance can make genuine visual changes harder to detect, and hiding a region means changes inside it will not be tested. If only a timestamp or another known-volatile element is unstable, target that element rather than masking a large section that contains the behavior under test. Troubleshooting missed or noisy changes
- The screenshot shows the collapsed page. The click may not have occurred, or the test may capture too soon. Check the locator and add an assertion for the expected expanded state before the screenshot.
- The test cannot find the button. Confirm its accessible role and name in the rendered page. Prefer a user-facing role locator; use a test ID only if that is the project’s intentional testing contract.
- The screenshot changes across machines or CI runs. Compare the browser project and rendering environment used to create the baseline with the one used for the test. Browser, OS, hardware, settings, and headless mode can affect pixels.
- The assertion is flaky around animations or dynamic content. Use a meaningful state assertion, let the screenshot assertion reach its stable-capture condition, and narrowly filter content that is genuinely volatile. Avoid broad masking or loose thresholds that could conceal the change you want to catch.
- The expected image changed after a run. Review the diff first. Regenerate or accept a baseline only when the change is intentional and the updated reference is appropriate to commit.
- The click opens a different page or window. Update the test to wait for and assert the real navigation or popup outcome, then capture that resulting state.
